I finished the game today. My opinion about it.
First off all, I am really not an FPS player. I perfer RPGs (no MMORPGS, but stuff like Neverwinter Nights, Two worlds, Oblivion etc). The whole concept of the big daddies and little sisters won my heart though so I decided to buy an FPS again (don't laugh but the last FPS I played until BioShock was Doom 2 :) )
The good.
Atmosphere. I love it. The artwork and mood were brilliant. Great music too, I loved blasting splicers when the happy tunes of Glen Miller played in the background. And the dark and creepy advertisements for the little sister orphanage (as well as the training posters for the sisters in Little Wonders). The mainy diaries which told you the story. Especially those about Masha gave me the creeps. And the one in which you heard the end of Suchung - brilliant!
The interactivity with the surroundings. I loved you could flame the oil and burn corpses to then throw them at the enemy. Brilliant.
The interaction between the little sisters and the big daddies was exactly as I hoped how it would be. I loved it, the little sisters egging the big daddies on to kill you, the whole mr. Bubbles thing. The way the little sisters still spoke as little kids. Once, in Arcadia, I thought I actually heard a little sister singing Tomorrow. But I never heard that again afterwards.
Good action. Fun for an FPS because of the great atmosphere. I specially liked levels in which you had to defend the lab in arcadia or guide the little sister while pretending to be a big daddy. The variety of combat was great too, setting security alerts and big daddies against you enemies.
The end. I loved how the bad guy got to his end. I played the game as a rescuer, I don't know if the ending is different if you been harvesting (I can imagine the last movie sequence is) but I loved how the last boss got actually killed :)
The bad.
Registration. I read the horror stories and I have no clue about rootkits whatsoever. So I will not complain about that here. What did annoy me was that it took me 6 hours before my registration code was accepted by the server. That's what I experienced - can't really judge about all the horror stories going around.
Crashes. The game crashed a lot on me. I expect that is because my computer is on the lower end of it all. It's mainly designed for Poser so it can handle 3d applications easily. It can run Oblivion and Two Worlds at highest settings easily - but BioShock was a bit too much. Still, it annoyed me that it crashed a lot. Also annoying was that all the settings were set back to default high settings after each crash. My game doesn't meet the recommended system, but it does surpass the required system. So I had expected it would run (and not crash) when keeping the graphic settings down.
Subtitles. The subtitles were often a bit out of sync with the things being said. This made it confusing for me. As English is not my native language I always play with subtitles on to miss no clues. But the subtitles often went much faster than the voices.
Easy. With having 0.0 experience at FPSs I decided, adviced by the game, to go on easy mode. Well, it was a bit too easy that way. Going to replay some time soon as a harvester (will be hard to kill those kids) on a harder setting.
The plot. I read a post or two about the game having a great plot twist. I really didn't see what was so great about it. About Atlas being who he really was? Meh. I didn't really enjoy learning "who the player was" - but then again I am used to RPGs and no plot twist has ever beaten for me the whole plot twist in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1.
I loved learning the history of Rapture. It was great. The morality that german woman doctor and the whole fight between Ryan and Fontaine. Great stuff. But the story behind the player disappointed me. I had expected/hoped that he was somehow involved around the whole big daddy and little sister thing. Perhaps he been a big daddy in his past or a family member of him has been made into a little sister.
For a FPS this game was great fun. I will certainly replay it again sometime. Does anyone know if the ending is different if you harvest instead of resque? Then I will replay sooner :). And at a greater difficulty setting for sure.
In the end, I'd say this game is a 7 out of 10. The atmosphere and setting of Rapture are brilliant. Too bad that the player's story is very poor compared to it. The constant crashes also took out a bit of fun.
