I'll be running BioShock on the following system:
- Athlon 64 X2 4400
- ASUS A8N32-SLI
- 2GB DDR400
- 7900GTX 512MB
Necros

Celeron 2,8 GHz
GeForce 6600GT 256MB
768MB RAM
Not really powerful but it was good enough for R6: Vegas, so I guess it should be fine with BioShock too. I hope. :D

laptop:
Core 2 Duo T7200 2.00GHz

Currently have
Intel P4-C 2.8ghz
Samsung 256x4 (1GB) PC2700 DDR 2.5-3-3-7
BFG 7800GS 256MB GDDR3 AGP
22" Viewsonic VX2235wm (16:10 ratio)
and Windows XP SP2
By the time this comes out I hope to buy an Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 (2.13ghz) maybe OC it to 2.8, but have a mobo that supports AGP because my card is fine for anything DX9 can throw at it. New DDR2 RAM too, but probably still 1GB.

I'm on a P4 3.8GHz CPU (not overclocked). 2GB ram, nVidia 7800GTX. I plan to upgrade later this year though to something meatier. When the next gen games come out, I want to play them on full.

Kids love system specs that don't mean much:
C2D @ 3.33 ghz
2GB of DDR800 4-3-3-16
8800GTS 640 @ 626/2200
etc
If it doesn't run BioShock in near to full at my dodgy LCD-limited res of 1280x1024 I'll not be impressed :)

Hey guys!
anyway some people have good RAM a good graphics card and a dated processor thats a little dated.
my experience with PC gaming is that the graphics card and the ram is what really gets you the good FPS. a physx processor will help a lot too so the processor can focus on other things therefore upping your preformance of the game a lot
my system right now is a
p4@3.4 ghz (not overclocked)
1 gig of ram (soon to be 2)
and a geforce 6800 GS 256 mb (buying a fatal1ty edition 8600 GT which is fairly decent soon).

these is absolutely no reason to upgrade your CPU. Just spend about $40 on a good cooler and overclock the 6300. In will be more than enough to run BioShock; most newer games are GPU limited anyways.

Considering there is going to be another price drop next month, there is no reason not to get a 6600. I'm not much of an overclocker anyway, at least not with this board. I don't trust Gigabyte products enough to play with overclocking. The only reason I got a DS3 was because of its price and the various user and professional reviews I read on it. I'm really not a big fan of their mobos, not after having three of their NF2 boards fry out on me.

Well, this is my current system:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe nForce 2 w/Soundstorm
1 GB DDR PC3200
2 x 80GB Western Digital HDs
Sapphire X800XT VIVO 256MB
Acer 2216WBD 22" 1680x1050 LCD
I just recently picked up the Acer 22" monitor. It's the first step in my upgrade plans for Bioshock, since I know my current system won't cut it for running the game. The majority of the components in this system are 5 years old, but have served me quite well up until this point. So I can't complain. This is the longest I've ever gone without doing a major upgrade.
I would really like to stick with AMD and get a Phenom processor/motherboard combination, but they're making it tough with all the delays. The latest news is that Phenoms won't be available for sale until November. I'm not sure if I want to wait that long to upgrade. It would mean not being able to play Bioshock until then . . . a 2-3 month wait after the game's release. :( So I might end up getting an Intel Penryn processor/motherboard combo instead.
This is what my next system might look like:
AMD Phenom FX-80 Quad Core
Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe AM2+ motherboard
2GB DDR2 PC8500
750GB Western Digital HD
eVGA 8800GTS 640MB
Auzentech X-Fi Prelude 7.1
Acer 2216WBD 22" 1680x1050 LCD
I'll also switch to Vista at that point. Maybe by then most of the issues in Vista will have been smoothed out.
But it's all still kind of up in the air: depending on when Intel releases their Penryn processors, how the cost compares between an AMD vs. Intel setup, and whether ATI brings out a 2950XT card (doesn't look like this year).

I guess I can understand you situation with that cheap DS3. I purchased my ASUS P5B as a refurb so I got a great price on it. Its almost too easy... I was able to reach 3.4ghz with my 6300 on the stock cooler. I know it sounds like a lie, but with an ASUS + conroe those types of ocs are possible.

I know its possible. I remember the early C2D overclocking reviews where people got it that high. If I had a more reliable motherboard I might be more tempted to do some OCing, thats one of the reasons I want a 680i SLI board.

If you can afford it, get the 8800GTS 320 and a better PSU. The power supplies that come with cases suck 90% of the time. The 20x Light-On burners seem to have a lot of issues right now, I'd just go with a slower one. Not to mention, there is no 20x media out on the market. Wireless keyboard and mouse for gaming? I'd check reviews first. Usually wireless is not ideal for a gaming set-up. I use a cheap-o laptec PS/2 keyboard and MS Optical Blue mouse and couldn't be happier. I've had a wireless set-up from Logitech before and it was nothing but problems.
Vista Home Basic...Sucks. Your better off getting XP Home than Vista Home Basic. Buy an OEM version of Ultimate or Home Premium. Basic is totally worthless, it can barely be called Vista.
Are you buying all of this online or from a retail store?

I'm upgrading my machine so much, that' it'll be all new apart from the HDD and DVD drives:
E6600 (or E6420) CPU, 8800GTS GPU (haven't decided on the MBs yet) 2GB RAM, SLi mobo, 600W PSU, and a ATX server tower I got second hand for $15.

whoa, nice
I might have to upgrade my PSU (It's lower than I expected, I thought it was higher when I bought it). But other than that I'll be putting in a XFX 8600GT type thing. I'll be adding a bunch of HDD space (not just for BioShock, but I need more in general).
But yeah, everything looks fine for my computer. Too bad that Crysis is estimating 2.8GHz. I'm short by .27 (2.53)! Haha, but its only an estimate, so I might luck out.

For motherboards I'd reccomend either the Nvidia reference 680i SLI boards (reference boards are under EVGA, BFG, XFX, ECS, brands) or the ASUS 680i board. The Nv reference boards have better BIOS support though and wih ASUS you better hope you never have to call customer service.

Ya know. I think it would be worth the extra hundred or so to get a 8800GTS320. They'll be able to last you longer. The 1440 x 900 that the monitor you are getting supports will end up being stressful on that card. The 320 will also pretty much allow you to max out any game currently on the market.
Just a sugestion though. If you plan on doing minor, incramental, upgrades as time goes on the 8600 will be workable until you can afford a better card.

You may know this already, but be careful which RAM you buy with a new mobo. Most motherboards these days, especially the mid-range to higher-end ones, are VERY picky about RAM.

Should definitely keep up with the best of them, though I won't be upgrading to Vista, so no DX10. I have been a PC gamer for years, but I went out on a limb and pre-ordered for the 360 because I want to be able to enjoy BS on my new 37" Dell HDTV.
I could certainly use the HDTV as a monitor, but that would be a hassle ("excuse me honey while I move our TV onto my computer desk...oh, I'm sorry were you watching something?"). First time for everything.
Afterthought: it would be great if cross platform titles like this allowed you to save your game and export it to the other platform. There are times I want to sit on my couch, and other times when I just need to play with a mouse and keyboard.

There are times I want to sit on my couch, and other times when I just need to play with a mouse and keyboard.
holy ****, 37 inch? (is it flat screen? *drools*)
hell, if you're willing to pay for all that, you should get a Laz E boy chair, and have a slide out flat surface for you keyboard and mouse. I've seen them before and they're amazing set ups.
But yeah, great for cross platform gaming (play shadow run... AGAINST YOURSELF! lol)

but then again, it's a TV screen (not computer monitor) so I don't really know how big that actually is (three feet one inch) as far as price for a television

Also, Plug&Play is not a type of monitor, it is simply the driver Windows has chosen to use for your monitor. Which means XP has no clue what display you own. So... which do you own? What brand and size?

Bah. Just get Liquid Nitrogen. That'll solve all of your cooling problems, plus its non-conductive. I wouldn't recommend submerging the radiator in a conductive liquid like water, unless you use distilled.

LN is ridiculous. I'd rather go phase-change than waste the time and money on something as ridiculous as liquid nitrogen (which is extremely temporary).
I don't have cooling problems. I have an insatiable urge to overclock and push the boundaries of hardware to get every ounce of worth of out em.
o_O i don't see why you wouldn't suggest submerging the radiator in liquid. There are no wires attached to it, it's a solid chunk of metal with hoses attached, that's it. It's been done many times before.
Check the Xtreme Systems forum if you wanna see more unorthodox cooling ideas that aren't your typical run of the mill water cooled setups.

I know LN isn't worth the time, it was kind of sad attempt at a joke.
I have qualms about submerging anything I have attached to my computer in a conductive liquid. I'd rather not take the chance of it somehow leaking, spilling, dripping, or whatever on my parts. Thats one of the big reasons I havn't done a liqiud cooling set-up yet, that and its expensive.

The guy who set me up with the liquid rig I'm using now originally used it with TEC's (peltier's), and was extremely disappointed. TEC is an aging technology that doesn't yield the kind of results that the type of people who liquid cool would expect. I wish it was that simple. Besides, TEC's suck up a LOT of power and need their own seperate PSU's.

I dunno they've come a long way in a few years, and the newer ones aren't that power hungry (which is why Sparkle can probably get away with using them now). I use them at work in something called a thermal cycler, and the difference between older and newer models is pretty marked.

You could probably sell that computer for a good price on eBay even today. It is not worth very much, but with those 2 Pentium 4 chips... It should not be hard to trick some dumb bastard into forking over hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
With the right mix of ignorance (on their part) and eloquent wording (on yours) a duel P4 system with 2GB of ram could certainly sell for well over what it's actually worth.

confession: ive done the same thing to people on ebay. I purchased a used ASUS motherboard at a forum for $70. The motherboard had be soldered so thats how a got it for such a good price. Slight update. I have decided to get Vista Ultimate retail (which should include 64 and 32 bit versions as far as I can tell, so I can hopefully swap the os's on one machine whenever I feel like it).
The choice to go to ultimate basically came from the fact that only three versions of vista support dual core computing, and none of them were home premium. Those versions are ultimate, business, and enterprise.
I've got a amd athlon 64 x2 5200+ processor am2 socket. I will not buy an OS that will not support that processor to it's fullest potential.

As with Home Basic, only 1 physical CPU is supported.[6]
6.^ a b c d e All physical CPUs may have an unlimited number of cores.
So unless you plan on spending 10K and putting 2 or 3 dual or tipple core CPUs in I would stick with 32bit home or 64bit premium, unless you get get the whole thing for under 300,vista right now is so bugy and so out of whack its barely worth half retail price, the OEMs are goign cheap tho...
plus thos restrictions MS just thought of putting in to pad sales will be removed and tweaked in time too, heck halo 2 PC has been hacked to run on XP and it runs better...,so MS is not playing with a full deck...

Aw crap, once again I misread a damn ms sysreq sheet.
Must be the font they use or something. I had (mis)read the list in microsoft's official vista system requirements for vista ultimate at http://www.microsoft.com/vista where I thought I read that multiple core processors were only supported by those three os's. I did think this was a bit of a gip, since win xp pro supports multiple core cpu's and it was a hell of a lot less expensive than vista ultimate.
That having been said, I'll probably still get ultimate to cover my bases.

100-150 € is 8600 territory, I understand it's a bit unimpressive performance wise though and if you won't be using Dx10 an earlier gen ATi or Nvidia card might be the better option. I guess it should do for 1-2 years though...

Actually, he got the specs from dxdiag. It shows two CPU's because the P4 he has is dual core. It shows I have two as well with my E6600.
As to my specs, I'll copy-n-paste from the same forum Pinky is a member of.

Windows Vista 64 Bit Edition (32 Bit doesn't make use of all 4GB of ram)
20" HDTV being used for 360/PC
Logitech MX510 mouse

I plan to buy myself a quad core later this year probably, I'll have to get a better PSU for that too though.
Also hope to buy a better sound card soon, still this should handle Bioshock I hope.

Nitpicking here, but it shows are two because P4s use Hyper Threading to emulate a second core. They are not dual core. They are one core chips that simply fake a second core.

Well why the hell do you need liquid cooling for? thats an overclockers item. and you really are wasting your money getting a e6600, how much is the drop anyways? if its like 50 bucks do it if any more dont bother.

He is right about it still being in it's infancy but it's not as bad as some make out...generally most, stress MOST not ALL, drivers/patches that are available for Vista 32 bit edition have a 64 bit equivalent. At least that seems to be the case with all the devices and programs I've got running.

Ya ya I know the OS only detects 3.25 gigs but I think its still worth it.
Its newly built so I'm just praying it doesn't give me any crap when launch day comes around.
Shoulda gone with 64 bit IMO (especially if it was recently built), wouldnt have to worry about the RAM limit, and those horror stories of compatability with 64 bit are things of the past. I havent had a problem yet.

I've got bad news for you bud - if I'm right and remembering correctly, Bioshock requires a shader model 3 compatible card. The X850 doesn't support SM3....I should know, just upgraded away from the X850XT.
Long story short I think the game will refuse to boot cause of your Gfx card.

ADM 3700+

The 4200X2 is not that much faster than the 1MB cache 3700,you have a good amount of ramm witch will help loads times (play dark messiah with 1GB you can take naps I tell you!)
And your vid card is nothing to sneeze at but its just one of the normal clocked and memory 88's not a uber 88..altho ya I guess it is low high end....that card makes the diffrance 0-o
(sorry if I am confusing I think as I type ><)

it can run on a GF 6600/better/ATI X1300
http://www.digitalbattle.com/2007/07/09/bioshock-system-requirements-released/
it dose not "require" shader 3.
If they made it for shader 3 only they would lose half their PC sales.
Also there is lil diffrence in the XP3000 and ADM 3700 we are talking abotu steps in power of 20ish % when I tested rigs(not all mine) with a 6800OC AGP card it go 1000 points higher on 3Dmark 03 on the 3700 system with the same 1GB of ram.
Also the 4200 is about 20% more powerful than a 3700 it runs better for stuff thats optimized for dual cores of coarse.
In the end tho it may or may not run right, newer gmes are only bug tested on slightly newer cards making things like a 6200OC that has the power to run games like Call of juarez and MM:Dark messiah crash and glitch out becuse it was not within the rnage of bugtesting they have done.
Altho the Unreal engines are just more stable and run better than the Source engines and unbisoft is really bad about support.....

If they made it for shader 3 only they would lose half their PC sales.
According to the minimum system requirements in the page you linked to, the game does require Shader Model 3.0:
Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 128MB RAM
Compliant, in regards to hardware, means manufactured or produced in accordance with a specified body of rules. The rules in this case are those outlined in the DirectX 9.0c specification which includes Shader Model 3.0 hardware support. Moreover, the way 2K/Irrational games have stated this is exactly how the requirement reads on Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Rainbow Six: Vegas, SpiderMan 3, and other games that require Shader Model 3.0 hardware support on the graphics card. I imagine this is why GeForce 6600 and Radeon x1300 are specifically stated specifically. Both of these cards support Shader Model 3.0.

Glad someone else realised this - on the issue of them losing sales cause they aren't (and until there is an official word on this I won't be say it's definate I'm just voicing my opinion) supporting SM2 - there have been a LOT of recent games that have switched to being SM3 only and above.
Neildittmar just mentioned 3 of the bigger ones in his post.

If someone has played on a system like this for recent games, how do you think It'll run it? playable? fun?
I know the guys with the more expensive rigs will say it'll run like crap but it would be good to hear from someone that has a similar rig.
Cheers!
not long now :)

My one computer is very similar in specs to yours. It contains a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz, GeForce 7800GS, and 2GB RAM. Most games run fine on this system at reasonable settings. Think 1024x768 or 1280x1024 with medium-high image quality settings at around 30-60fps depending on the game. The only games this system struggles with a bit are newer titles like DiRT and Lost Planet, although they are still more than playable at reduced graphics settings.
Based on all the official information that's out there regarding minimum/recommended specs, I'm expecting this system to run either 800x600 or 1024x768 and Medium image quality at around 30fps. Obviously, this is just a guess but an educated one I think given the published specs, the tech the game is based off of, etc.

You don't need much in the way of skill. Seriously building a PC isn't that difficult and totally worth while. I upgraded from a P4 2.4ghz single core, 6600gt card and 512mb. I spent a total of £500 and I now have a :-
C2D E6600 @ 2.7ghz
3072mbs of ram
8800gts 320mb
If they can't get bioshock to run at 1280 x 1024 with max graphics on those specs then I am seriously going to give the peeps at irrational a good spanking :p

3072 megs of ram? How did you manage that? or is that just what your os can map? but even then, your video memory should leave more headroom than that

3072MB of RAM divided by 1024MB equals 3GB exactly. There are multiple ways he could have it configured though, some supporting dual-channel and some not. It depends on the motherboard and number of RAM slots really. Some examples include...
3 x 1GB RAM
2 x 1GB RAM + 2 x 512MB RAM
1 x 2GB RAM + 1 x 1GB RAM
... and a number of other configurations.
