I'm sure this must have been thought about already, but I thought I'd flag it up for discussion anyway.

If one's ownership of one's game is going to be tied to one's hardware, why not ditch the requirement to have the DVD in the computer to play it?

After all, having the CD/DVD in the comp is an older, outmoded and rudimentary form of copy protection. Why not just have a programme like Securom validate the CD once, validate the installation for that computer, and then let the player play the game without having to have the CD/DVD in the computer at all?

I'm pretty sure that this would take away about a third of people who use pirated copies' reasons for using pirated copies (which is, let's face it, to enable them to play the game without having to faff about with a CD/DVD to play it).

Surely, in this day and age ... ?

This is precisely why I buy games on Steam.

Because game companies (publishers?) are stupid.

This is precisely why I buy games on Steam.

Funny thing about that is when HL2 came out, if you bought the disc version, you had to have the disc in the drive, even though it used Steam.

Another stupid thing is when games like Battlefield, which is basically only a online multiplayer game, and has online verification, needs a disc...

Heres a better idea that saves money, don't use DRM at all.
