Hello there!
I have been watching Bioshock's progress for a few months now and was really hoping to get it however a fundamental question came up. I have a few siblings in the house (young at that) as well as elderly family members. I also personally do not particuarly like harsh language. Its just how I've been brought up and would rather avoid it if at all possible. Yes, you know where this is going.
Before I part with my money could someone please tell me if there is a significant amount of swearing and if so, is there a feature to turn it off (as some games have this feature) or a mod/ patch available or likely?
Game otherwise looks terrific!
Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

I only heard the word **** like once. And Atlas is nice. He says Would you kindly. Curse words in this game are only used where the characters are real angry.

I haven't heard a lot either, come to think about it. I believe Death is correct.

I also heard Atlas say Bastard. Mostly when talking about Ryan. But there are little girls in it...

There is a reason why its a M ( 17+ ) rated game. As far as language back in those years.. people where just as bad as they are today. Just not as much in the media. ( in some ways they where worse back then though )
So if you are concerned about this kinda thing, DO NOT BUY IT! It is not meant for little kids, so if you're afraid they might hear it or see it, don't get it. Simple as that.

I don't care about the swear words, but they could have put something really good like naked women running around dancing for dollars... in a strip-joint type of setting, and then when you tip them, they go all ape-shiat on you and attack you. hmmm....

Sorry if I seem a little harsh, I am just really annoyed about these parents that buy games that are not meant for kids.. they ignore the rating.. then act like they have a right to complain about it.

I don't think people in the 1950s used "pop her cherry" back then. =/

I'm not complaining about the rating but quantity can be an issue.
I am almost 21 believe it or not but swearing in life still rubs me up the wrong way. Just something instilled in me. I find many of todays games just can't resist putting surplus amount in and end up spoiling an otherwise perfect experience. There is enough swearing in real life. Games are supposed to be a method of escapism - and games are not like reality in that they contain choice.
Sorry, i'm ranting.
I dont know if it was just me or not, maybe i just got all the bad mouthed splicers, cause it seemed to me every other one was cursing up a storm. I guess its really just the luck of the draw for that then.

It was used.. I have letters from way back in my family history still intact from those days.
You would NOT belive some of the things said lol.
BTW if you ever read about "French Letters" during WW2, they where meaning condoms at the time. ( some people still do not know that for some reason )
I also have old photos and documents/letters from before WW2 as well, so don't think I am just talking about ww2 era..

Dont worry man. The swearing is not very much. But it is scary and has a lot of violence. So keep it up on the top shelf with your Pron collection. Dont tell me you dont have one either.

Rarely hear a splicer swearing. Usually just moans/innane babble. Dunno where you got that from.

Well see i don't think game devs put swearing in just to put swearing sometimes that kind of language adds to the immersion and adds to the environment.

How? Previous very immersive experiences in the virtual world have been without any whatsoever - Morrowind - Doom (Originals when they came out) and such others. An immersive game can be produced without bad language.

Not many swear words, but you should be worried about some of the action scenes involving the Little Sisters rather than the language.

Believe me, people back then where both ruder and, in som ways, more sexually explicit than people today.
The myth that people back then where pure and wholsome people that went to church every sunday is quite a bit silly.

Thanks for the warning about L.Sisters. There has been quite a few other sites with ocmments on about the fact they are often the focus of violence.
I think after listening to all your very kindly posted posts I will go for the game but also purchase a few ear plugs and bolts for the bedroom door just in case. Lol.
It's a shame that there are not more games where the ability to run alternative/ slightly limited dialogue is not an option.
(This bit could be long, miss if don't want to wander off topic)
I think violence in video games could get us all into a very long discussion indeed. In short I'll just comment that I think violence such as that of towards the L.Sisters is something the gaming community has been subconsciously aware would happen for a while. So long as a distinct boundary is in place where reality vs pretend is clearly defined there should not be a problem. Developers have tested the water with violence and its boundaries in terms of content including children with such as American McGee's Alice which was quite contraversial in that it took the classic tale and twisted it into a world where delicate topics of sanity and moral values were focused on. The little sisters seem to have an option of being used but there is still clear reference to them as needing to be protected so the company seems to be enforcing the idea of protecting them via the Big Daddy creature and that there is an option to save them.
The little sisters are a very interesting inclusion I do agree.

A couple of f*cks here, a couple of b*tches there, a couple of instances of sexual inuendo during a few diaries but nothing major and everything within context. This is not Liberty City, this is rrrrrrrrrrapture :)

There are a few swear words in there... you'd have to be careful if you are concerned.
Personaly i'm far more concerned that all the male splicers so far sound like Homer Simpson which makes them laughable rather than threatening. ;)

Doom was more of a slaughter fest than a immersive game. ( the old ones )
As far as Morrowind is concerned it had its moments.

I never really noticed that much swearing in the game, but I like it when there's swearing in games it just makes seem more realistic IMO. I am only annoyed by swearing in games when its gratuitous, that's when I begin to be turned off, but this one just uses them in context and in character.

Cursing in games I think depends on the game itself. Games like Oblivion and Morrowind (extreme period pieces) would obviously not contain harsh language because of the period and the atmosphere it is set in. With game franchises such as GTA, those are current pieces that would contain a lot of cursing. Its the atmosphere they are creating. GTA is creating a hostile but lively environment with characters cursing and some actually offended by other characters. It gives the game more realism and puts the player more in sync.
Bioshock contains its fair share of cursing but its all in the manner of the atmosphere. Its creating a 1940's 1960's feel, so you won't here todays slang words, but you will here some vulgar obscenities that were blurted out during that time period.

There's blood and guts and gruesome and creepy imagery everywhere and you're concerned about a bit of swearing? :)
Sounds to me like language should be the least of your concerns with this game if you're worried about younger and older family members seeing or hearing the game in action.

Back to the question.....
Does "oh major, i'm constipated" count as bad? It does involve **** in a round about way. I heard one of the nurse splicers saying that in the medical pavilion say that.
Like 'Death' , I have also heared - "****" plus ****er, mother****er and arse. I am only at Neptunes bounty but by the time I get to the end I fully expect to hear- tits, fanny and minge (all in the same sentence hopefully).
Don't buy this game if you are easily offended.

I've heard a decent amount of swearing throughout my adventures in Rapture. One instance that comes to mind is when I was playing earlier today. I was searching through some stuff and this splicer that was on fire came running at me screaming, "Get the **** out of my office!!". I couldn't help but laugh for about 5 minutes, because it was so random.
I've heard the word **** the most, though. Anyway, just get the game. You're an adult now and as such can handle these sorts of things. That and it's a wicked game, anyway, regardless of the amount of profanity in it.

Doom wasn't exactly "immersive", and was rather skimpy on any voice at all. Morrowind wasn't set in a location where such swearing would take place anyway.
BioShock is. Rapture has degenerated, it was a utopia, now it's hell. Considering what the people there have been through, it's expected that they're somewhat more liberal with the curse words.

Imagine you're crossing a dark room. In the distance a splicer shouts: "Things were supposed to work out for me down here! Were are you! Ryan, you fu**!" (Or something like that.)
Heard it on the demo. Mabye you should give it a try? It's out on Steam too. Only a quick download away.
Personaly I'm not into swearing.
Funny though, that you (apparently) is quite strict about swearing, while slaughtering demons from Hell, on the other hand, is just fine. :p There are worse things than words in this world. :(

The voice acting in this game is astounding. I love how the splicers are constantly talking to themselves and all the random things they say. It just adds to the atmosphere of a game already oozing of detail.

Oh yea... I only have the demo at this moment, but I have already seen them say a lot and its funny some of the things they say.. ( there are a few splicers in the demo if your care-full enough you can stalk without being detected.. do that and you can listen in on the conversation it is having.. with itself.. or in a few cases.. with a corpse! )
Language is crude. but
This is kinda off topic a bit.
The game is enjoyable as a game. But as far as a scientific and social attitudes protrayed in the game, somthing doesn't click with me.
Most notable is the adverts and social thinking/dress portrayed in the game. It is nothing of what I remembered of the early 50's and 60 's. The machines you hack to get supplies cheaper reminds me how a machine would be manufactured/designed in the 20's and 30's. Also how people acted during the 1920's and late 30's is more like what they do and say in this game.
(Yes G-Granny and Gramps swore like foul mouthed sailors - they just didn't do it around the kids)
Then of course they didn't really refer to DNA in the 30's. More common was the term nuclein. In fact people didn't really know much about DNA until the mid 70's and were constanty exposed to the terminology.
But reference to the CIA and KGB wasn't around in the 1930's either.
But thats a part of the game. Programmers don't have to be historically correct.. They just have to make the game look good and work OK.
OK back to the remaining thread.
I also think the song "Somewhere under the sea" wasn't made in the 50's, but I could be wrong.
Braveheart

Hmmm, the game starts in 1960, and I suppose if you'd been living in a utopian society, under the sea, isolated from outside influences, you might just kinda bring the same with you which might not change much and not quickly.....difficult to say.
For me, there is no where near enough swearing and profanity in the game.
Braveheart.
