Hi. I bought Bioshock for my son after reading all about this fantastic game. The day after it was released, everything started to hit the fan. I have read about the install/removal problem, the 2 install limit, the widescreen problem and the rootkit problem. My first thought was "oh ****, I just lost $50." Now, my thoughts are to put the game away for a week or two and see what develops.
There is already a fix for the widescreen problem from someone else. And supposedly the 2 install limit has been increased to 5. Thank you for that.
There is mention of a widescreen patch from you somewhere on these forums and possibly a rootkit fix.
I have some questions if you would please answer them for me.
Why is "The Cult of Rapture" web site involved in this? Shouldn't all this info be on the 2K forums instead of spreading it out?
If/when the patches come out, where exactly will they be? 2K website, these forums, Cult of Rapture web site, auto-download?
I haven't found it yet, but could you tell me the maximum screen resolution this game supports? I'm hoping for 1920x1200.
I still have a dial-up connection, is the activation process lengthy?
I plan on watching these forums. Hopefully I can find all the answers I need before I have my son install this game. Thank you for your time.

hi marmaduke, I can give you a couple of answers.
You will find a list of supported resolutions in the detailed report on BioShock at the Widescreen Gaming Forum. Yes, it does support 1920x1200.
http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11685
I also have a dialup connection. I installed and activated the game today and I estimate it took about half an hour.
BTW you won't be disappointed, it's a fantastic game. But how old is your son. I mention that because this is a violent game and intended for adults I think.

Perfect post eyes.
Also the cult of rapture is the website that the developers had created just for bioshock.
It makes it easier to keep up to date with the news pertaining to Bioshock.
Kind of like ESPN for sports, instead of having it muddled in the news channels and having to wait for the sports part to come on, they created a whole channel just for sports.
Hence why they created cult of rapture.
They will probably have information there about updates, or this forum.
Also the game is NOT MEANT for kids, there is a ton of swearing in it, and things children should not see yet.
Hope that helps.

It's an extremely violent game with graphic and disturbing imagery. Also, it's not just that it's a violent, it's that the game brings up some issues that children would have a hard time grasping, let alone dealing with.
As far as the other forum whiner junk goes, there is no "widescreen problem" (read the response in the cultofrapture.com news). There is no rootkit (see the sticky at the top of this forum for further discussion on that). There's no install/removal "problem".
Activation is quick & easy, even on dialup.

Yes there is some language. My little cousin was watching me play it and accidentally heard a no no word  Needless to say I think he cared more about the flames coming out of my hands than the word :)

Hey,
Have you seen the ESRB ratings?. Also dont worry about the widescreen thing the developers can fix it. Even the copy protection. If 2K games believes in their customers they would remove it.

I remember playing Doom and Mortal Kombat when I was 12 and people were freaking about how violent it was.
Now I could care less about human life or other people's feelings. Funny, that.

Thanks for the help everyone. The rating is 17+ I believe. My son is 16. You want violence? He'll be a black Belt in Karate in 4 months.
And in case anyone forgot...violent games do not make violent people.

Really, just because you're a tool who believes every bull**** lie fed to him doesn't make it the truth. :) Try looking up the definition of rootkit sometime.

Don't worry about Securom just install the game and play. Securom is only a problem if you are a pimply faced paranoid nerd who always finds something to cry about.

Or if you're an intelligent PC consumer that doesn't like things installing themselves without asking you, that are potentially malware and also don't uninstall when you uninstall what they came bundled with. That is, if you uninstall Bioshock, you STILL have to jump through hoops to uninstall the Securom ****. That's not suspicious at all.
Don't worry about viruses, just install whatever they've bundled with and use it. Viruses are only a problem if you are a pimply faced paranoid nerd who always finds something to cry about.

Also, it's "tl;dr". If you're going to use a meme, you should at least try to use it correctly. Also, it should be "iat;dr", meaning "I'm a tool, didn't read". Ignorance is no excuse. :)

the real problem with secure rom is that i am not able to run the game using wine on my debian box. so i have to boot into that awful win xp os. and no i do not want to buy a console, i am from germany, we are proud and loyal pc gamers and like to spend a fortune for a gaming rig that declassifies any consoles :)

It's just not an issue right now for I'd say 99.999999 percent of gamers. And if it is I'd like to ask why you're putting it on that many computers - I can only really think of 2 scenarios - the reviews situation, having a home pc, laptop, and a work pc you play games on (rendered workable by their fix).
So yeah install it now, and they'll likely have it fixed or workable soon enough or if they don't you can always crack your legit copy.

Her (or his?) son is 16, and as the parent, she or he? has determined that her (or his?) son is old enough to play this game. Please note that the ESRB ratings are guidelines for parents helping them getting informed whether or not their children or young adults should be allowed to play this game. So far, I haven't seen anything that would prevent me from having my 16 years old son play this - if I had a 16 year old son, that is ;)
