View Full Version : Making Bioshock Work with SM2.0 Cards! (Work in progress)

I apologize about posting this in two places, but I realized I had put this in General discussion when Technical Support would have been a better place. I would have edited and locked my topic on the other one but they dont let you edit your posts here! :(
----------------------
When I heard you needed a SM3 card to run Bioshock, I was mad. Here I had a video card that could run HL2, Stalker, and even upcoming Crysis, but not a game I had been looking forward to and had been getting good ratings everywhere.
So I started tinkering in the shader files of the Bioshock demo...
After an hour, I got it working on my card: and Ill tell you how
First, download this (which I made, and uploaded! )
http://rapidshare.com/files/50276163/SM2fixScottJG.rar.html
(If you install the above and it doesnt work, then try downloading and installing this, which offers more of my configuration files: http://rapidshare.com/files/50284028/SM2FixRelease2ScottJG.rar.html )
Then, copy and paste all files to the C:\Program Files\2K Games\BioShock\Builds\Release directory
Boot up Bioshock, and you should now see your cursor (you couldn't before)
Note:
1)It will take a LONG time to load things now at check points. Wait at least 5 minutes when you get a loading screen up
2)Some textures will look really ****py (or be an entirely different color than they should be)
BEFORE

AFTER (Notice the textures)

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/4126/after2mb7.jpg
This is a work in progress, so Im going to keep you guys updated
That being said, there is no reason they cant make this work on 2.0 cards: I made it work within 20 minutes!

OMG nuts, you are the best person in the world. Irrational games with all there money wont even do what you are doing. You are truly a saint.

I must stress again that you will know if it installed correctly if you see the Mouse cursor in game now
Thanks again for the support guys! It didnt take me long but I knew I wasnt the only X800 user here! :)

As I said elsewhere, I'm a programmer as well. I agree with what you said that they should've made it work with 2.0, no reason not to have. you did it in 20 minutes. xD
Props to you, my man. I will still buy a new card, but I can at least enjoy half-textured Bioshock-y goodness while I wait for the card to ship.

Perhaps this was 2K's plan - why program 2.0 support if people will do it for you for free?

Awesome. Working on all settings cranked. I think I'll wait for a further revision from you ScottJG before proceeding into the demo :D
Just something to note: It worked on my rig on high settings just as your screen shots illustrate. When I lowered settings in menu, the water was an all white texture.

yea the water was white?

We need to get this thread stickied so all these hopeless people in the forum realize there may be hope

Please boycott this game. It's going nowhere with this PS3 (did I meant the ****py ass console? no I meant Pixel Shader 3.0) requirement.

Korr did you maybe post in the thread in the General discussion? I'm getting the 2 confused myself.

But I'm very impressed with what I see so far. One question: Does downloading the larger file package you made available improve texture viewing in any way?
Anxiously awaiting future updates. :)

No, some peope said it wouldnt work for them, so I loaded all my configuration files that I thought were neccesary, which included my default.ini and defuser.ini, among other things, in case that was what was helping make it work.

Yea, I just noticed that...

Tried it, and it didnt work, i still got to see the 2k, unreal engine, nvidia mini video advertisement, then the 2k video advertisement, then i skip, the Send report/dont send report error appears. Good game.

How do I install that download? Windows doesn't recognize what it is (I do have it saved to my desktop however)

I realize I'm being greedy, and apologize in advance for this question. :P
Any idea when we'll see another update? ;)

nice job man, thanks alot for this fix. just goes to show the true mindset of 2k when convieniently skipping over the programming for sm 2.0. in 1 day you managed a preliminary work around, yet in the years i'm sure this game to make, they couldn't have included it? sounds more like they sold their soul to some select hardware companies to sell some video cards. damn the pusher man, and keep up the good work. game has the feel of hl2/dark messiah so far. Deffinately won't be purchasing thing game, and I hope others in the same boat won't to show that these types of guerilla marketing ploys do nothing but aggrivate the core of the pc demographic ie. people looking to get the most performance for their $$, and share workaround for greedy money grubbing schemes. again thanks for the awesome job with the fix, sorry for the rant.

Oh, I'll buy it--hopefully when either 2K or our SM 2.0b goodness buddy gets a working model finished.
Besides, I'm contemplating an upgrade anyway....

Go and sign this petition! 2K say that they will make a Shader Model 2.0 patch if 5000 people sign it!!!

Anyone with an x800 series card can try this game or demo (kind of) simply by deleting or renaming the 2 shadercache files in the game dir. There are lots of textures missing and load times of more than 5 mins but it works. I would suggest renaming the files by putting a 1 at the beginning of the filename, just so you don't have to reinstall if they come out with a patch.

ScottJG Yo man my pc keeps crashing after using ur shader. It runs so slow after it installing it. It is using 100% of my processors speed. I hit new game then it starts the load screen then right at the end it crashes my pc. I never get past the load screen.

The original thread has been moved to Questions for the Team, I think.
That said, you can find the latest updates on the grass-roots SM2.0 patch project at the ShaderShock Project Forums (http://www.paolofranchini.com/shshock/viewforum.php?f=1).

how were you ripped off, it is no ones fault but your own that you did not know your video card was supported by bioshock, pherhaps you should you know, look on the box and it tells you the supported video cards.

The ShaderShock Project at paolofranchini.com seems to have died, can't access any of his pages.
I've already got a patch I'm happy with, but others may not be so lucky.
Anyone know what's going on over there?

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3NVVGCS1That appears to be Beta 2 of the fix. We have vastly improved the graphical results since then.
Check out the ShaderShock project forums (http://www.paolofranchini.com/shshock/index.php) for the latest releases. (The X600 is best served by the FlintFix line.)
