View Full Version : PC DVD copy protection

Has anyone else run into a problem with this?

I've gotten through the entire installation sequence up until the "Downloading Bioshock patches." It sits there for a second and then a popup hits saying I need to put the original disc into the drive instead a backup (Uhh...what?)

I've gone to the site it shows and done the things it's said, checked my own settings, etc etc and this problem shouldn't be happening. Now I'm worried that if I have to activate some key and everything - if I can't get the DVD I pulled out of the box to work, how am I going to get anything like key activation to work?

If anyone has any insight or ideas, please let me know. I'll be eternally grateful.

It sounds like it's failing on the (securerom?) DRM copy-protection on the DVD. You may need a different DVD drive to be able to get past this - ironically, older ones seem to work better than brand new ones when I've encountered this is the past, it's why I have two DVD-rw drives in my PC, one of them usually works!

Another possibility is it's blacklisting demontools, alcohol 120% or any other app that gives you virtual DVD-rom drives - uninstall if you got em, and try again.

I didn't think it would blacklist any apps, but I currently have none installed. I've just got the installers sitting around, leftover.

Using another drive is going to be a pain - my mobo didn't have enough SATA connections so I couldn't plug in the second one. I'll have to go in and hook it up to try, but it's the same exact drive that I've got hooked up now.

I'll try that though. Thanks

And I know at some point someone is going to post a reply along the lines of "go search the forums. there are 1200983201983108 topics on this already. n00b" so I'm going to go ahead and reply ahead of time to that - I checked the forums before I posted this. I saw 1 (that's one, a singular number) other thread in reference to this and there were no replies to it yet.

Some apps do blacklist Daemon Tools, even when you're not running that given app from it.

Who that hell doesn't have a DVD-ROM/RW of some sort these days?
Any computer worth it's salt ( and run Bioshock of course) will ahve a DVD reader, adn if not, they're even cheaper that CD ROMs, now that they're so old and HD dvds are coming out..

Like having a computer, and no internet. Neigh pointless.

If you don't have a DVD reader, get your chap ass outside adn slap down the $20 and get one. Hell if you looked hard enough you coudl find a freee one! ****, I even have one i don;t use! Give me your address, i'll GIVE it to you.

My understanding was that the OP had a DVD-ROM but it wasn't compatible with the software copy protection...?

Not that then!

ahah. SATA DVD drives in vista have a spotty reputation for passing DVD-checks - I have a £15 IDE DVD-ROM in there mainly for DiRT, it won't launch from my promise SATA DVDRW or my new SATA liteon 20x DVD-RW in vista 64. works in XP though, go figure.

Copy protection sucks, it slows down pirates not at all, and only frustrates legit users. Internet activation is one thing, but securerom/safedisc is just annoying.

I totally agree. What I have heard for an explanation in the past, and I don't know if this is actually true, is that publishing companies will often times push for this kind of ****. It is, I heard, the same reason why Unreal Tournament CD releases require the CD to play, but the first patch always removes the check.

Well, I did a few things:

1. Deleted Alcohol and Daemon Tools off of the comp. Granted, they were not installed, but at this point it's better safe than sorry.

2. Switched to my other CD/DVD drive.

3. Also restarted (had to -> in order to switch drives, I had to go into the comp and switch the SATA cable)

After starting back up, I ran the installer again and it worked this time. I'm not sure which of these did it (most likely switching drives and rechecking the cables...again), but it works now.

Thanks everyone

You know you can buy a cheap dvd drive for like $30 USD, maybe you should get a job and move out of mommys house? or maybe if your not old enough to get a job (which then you really shouldnt even be playing the game) ask mommy to buy you one?

So hey

I buy a game which says DVD required, I have a DVD player/writer which works just fine, oh no the ****ing disc security doesn't want to work with my dvd drive, now I have to pay another 30-40 bucks just to get the ****ing game to install

Calm down man. I think people were skimming this thread a bit too much and assuming you were playing using Daemon Tools because you had no DVD-ROM at all.

Sigh..
And I was just about to stick up for you too.

Anyhow, I had the same problem. All I did was remove Daemon tools and it was fine.
