Ok, so I just finished making some comparison screenshots from both the dx9 and dx10 versions of the game. I chose a dozen different locations and made comparisons of each scene, my findings were that I could not even tell the difference between either scenes. I showed a friend 6 different images, 3 dx9 shots, and the 3 of the same shot in dx10. I didn't tell him which was which ended up saying that 2 of the 3 shots looked better than the dx10 counterpart.

The only difference I can notice is roughly a 10fps loss in dx10 mode. Anyone thinking of upgrading to Vista for Bioshock, I wouldn't bother.

p.s Frankly I am a little dissapointed. :(

Was the same in lost planet, you could half the fps what you got in xp in vista and bareley no difference in graphics.

I have been trying to spot the differences between DX versions by making pics at sameplace but I have yet to see any clear difference

DX10 is a selling strategy from MS for Vista

That's because the game isn't native DX10, DX10 is just a late addition. I doubt you'll see any huge difference untill the real DX10 games hit the market.

Its called progress in DX. Ofcourse there may be a slight drop because its a new dx requireing a more powerful card to run it.

Fair enough, but Ken did say there wasn't a lot extra in DX10 mode in Bioshock, just 'a few extra effects' as he put it. And it's not like they've been using Bioshock to push DX10 and Vista like Crytek have been constantly doing with Crysis.

DX10 isn't going to look a lot better just because it's DX10. The idea was it was supposed to be more efficient so you could render more with it, but the reality is that right now, with the current drivers, it isn't more efficient, so if you go and cram tons of extra effects into the DX10 version, it would be way slower than DX9, not just a bit.

Also Bioshock has been developed primarily as a 360 game with another smaller team in parrallel making the PC game with the resources from the 360 team. I doubt the PC team has much scope, time or money for putting in new effects.

DX10 doesn't even work correctly for me. I have to load a level in Window mode, or else the game crashes. And you're right, the stunning effects are there in DX9 as well. And delivering a higher framerate too.

Dx10 isn't just all about "looks". Once games start to take advantage of Dx10 you will see a difference but right now as to be expected and as is only fair there is a transitional period.

I really don't understand why people are complaining if you have a dx10 compatible machine and bioshock runs well then play it on that, if you only have a dx9 compatible machine then run it on that.

Oh and dx10 does work perfectly I have played the demo on my middling C2D E6600 and 8800gts 320mb card and never did it dip below 40fps with everything maxed out at 1200 x 1024.

Quite frankly, Vista is not up to snuff right now. After a service pack or two, it should come around quite nicely just like XP did. In my opinion, DX10 is a gimmick at the moment. The slowdown in performance for no visual improvement is just whack.

This may be a silly question, but how do you run the DX9 as opposed to the DX 10 version? is it simply a matter of shutting off the DX10 effects in the graphics, or is there a separate DX9 version of the game installed? Call of Juarez had two startup icons, one for DX9 & one for DX10.

In Vista open the games explorer, right click on the Bioshock demo and select Play in DX9.

Right click on exe.... select run in dx9 mode

Hmm...odd, I'm sitting at a steady 75fps according to fraps with vista. Must be your vista rig isn't up to par for dx10.

I don't have that option. I believe that's just a hoax

Vsync is on. I'll enjoy hearing the crying when they start releasing dx10 only games and you have to upgrade to vista to play them.

Why? I have a dx10 card that's why I am able to tell that v-sync is turned off and that you are a big fat liar so you can believe in your own farytales but I do not :)

Was'nt it only water effected by DX10?

seems like the water has extra shimmer in 10x and fire looks a little better

Well I noticed that running in DX9 mode under vista the game works 100% better because there seems to be a glitch with v-sync in dx10 mode. Unless they solve that with a patch (if the full game is affected) I will stick with dx 9. Heck there is almost no visible difference anyway

At this time so am I,and I was one of the most vocal in asking about it,way back.... ;)

But.... I will reserve final judgement for the FULL retail release, and only AFTER I have played it through....

I swear dx10 looks better. It's subtle, but it's there. Not so much the water as it happens, but particle effects, explosions, lighting - all are improved (or it's a placebo effect, in which case it's a good one).

I run the demo at 1280 x 1024, all settings maxed, global lighting OFF, v-synch on and dx10 renderer - absolutely flawless performance on q6600, 2 gig DDR2, 8800 gts 640. Under the latest drivers, it even looks like you can force on AA / AF. Kudos to Irrational for producing the first true dx10 game - and it honestly does look better (I think :-)
