Got it fully installed now. The registration servers must be down though. I keep an "activation failed" message when I try to activate. Anyone else this far?

I've had the game since this afternoon, but earlier it would just come up to a DOS prompt box with a message stating to uninstall the game and reinstall it on the 21st.

I picked it up from Target tonight.

i asked the guy at the counter why they didn't have the 360 version up on the shelves and he said that they had to take it down because of a glitch. I don't know much more beyond that...

Not really. I'm not sure where you are located, but most places there are 24 hour retail stores all over the place such as Meijer, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. that will sell the game to walk-ins at midnight. Not to mention this activation issue does not apply to the 360 version at all.

I called 2K technical support and they told me to contact securom. They said that I wasn't the first person to have this problem.

I hear ya. I just realized the STEAM clock was in hours not minutes. That means per Steam that the game won't become active until 4pm EST. Please tell me that's not true 2k. I go there, and of course, it's still taking pre-orders for the 21st. I then thought, all is not lost.. I'll go to steam and get it there. Obviously I found the 14 hour count down. Now.. I'm sitting here.. its 115am.. I could go to the store and buy it (since I to altered my work day in the morning to play it tonight), but I see store bought versions don't work either??

However, the 360 version does not need to be activated (i.e. people who bought the game for 360 at midnight are already playing it) so once again, I am pointing out yet ANOTHER reason why it makes no sense that 2k would purposely not activate the servers until 9 or 10 am.

Couldn't agree with you more. If the servers weren't going to be up, all they had to do was post something on here stating when the servers will be up. That or just announced a street date of 8/22 instead.

I stayed up late and went to Meijer as they had advertised a midnight release. I waited at the service counter for 30 minutes so they could sell me the game exactly at midnight. For what? The game will not activate. No where was there any warning that you wouldn't be able to activate the game which was legally purchased at the appropriate time. Hopefully this is just a glitch. If it ends up being intentional then this has severely soured my opinion and I will never purchas a 2K game again... -jj

You're right, they will sell it. The point none of you guys seem to understand that ALL VERSIONS supposed to be activated more or less at the SAME TIME otherwise ONE WOULD LOSE SALES to the other (i.e. retail vs digital distribution).

Im not surprised. Call me a whinny *****, but it seems consoles get more love than PC players do :(. And i do agree, that if the game was suppose to be ready for today, then so should the server. Unless they are in Cal, then it would make sense that it might take til 3am to get it up, but i doubt that, they are just going by what they want to do and not caring that they are pissing off thousands of gamers. I wont be buying as many 2k games now since this happened. And if it doesnt activate til 4pm tomorrow, I will be writing a very angry letter to 2kgames (that they will look at and laugh) about how they need to get their act together.

I cant agree with you more, dont know about the rest of you but I was under the impression that I would be able to play the game tonite, when i bought it not in the morning. The 360 version doesnt have to wait, why the hell should we. I hate bashing 2K but they have taking a dump on the PC community.

Also, for any people having a problem where the installer is telling you that you have a backup copy of the game rather than a real disc, no luck with tech support. They told me to update the firmware on my DVD drive, but I already have the newest firmware so that didn't work out. The drive is only like 3 months old too, oh well, got it to work by temporarily hooking up an ancient DVD drive I had in an old computer. Now I can sit here and wait to activate my game.

What are you talking about? Most of Steam's inventory consists of games that have been out a while. Steam does not sell games on the day they are released all that often.

Now, I would have been fine with a digital copy, but I wanted to play now - and at the time I left to buy a copy, nowhere did it say "buy the game at midnight, but you can't play it until later!" (unlike the steam version, which was known to be unavailable until 1pm).

And I won't be playing it later today - in a few hours, my weekend officially ends, and for the next several days I have just enough free time to sleep. I was planning on getting in at least a couple hours of the full version before then, but apparently that's not happening.

PC users got shafted with the demo, and now it's happening with the full version. 2k has lost my interest in future products.

What are you talking about? Most of Steam's inventory consists of games that have been out a while. Steam does not sell games on the day they are released all that often.

It's also sold on D2d etc. And I got new games from Steam and also retail ones registered fine via Steam (Dark Messiah etc) for me.

Yah i just walked into walmart 5minutes till midnight, picked up a copy for pc.

installed it and went to activation part and BOOM cant get passed it.

Called 2k games up and the guys said its server traffic and he said try again in a hour or so.

It's not Steam. It's 2K, part of Take Two who obviously cannot pull together their corporate asses at all, not even for a single game release: look at all the lies and mess around the PC demo, the completely ****ed up forum with no moderation whatsoever, ruining people's gaming with spoilers or this sales without activation mess.

Yup, I've basically stopped reserving games from Ebgames/Gamestop since I can almost always go to a Walmart at midnight and get a game. I usually go to one thats sorta out of the way, I've yet to see them have more than 2 or 3 people there for a release other than Madden (was there for food not Madden and saw the line, the Walmart is kind of out in the country and is next to a Cabela's). Heck, I even got a collector's edition of WoW TBC there without a problem a week after release.

So I tried to get them to do a manual activation over the phone, no go. This time I got a different support person and he gave the story someone else got about there being too many people trying to activate and that the servers are up... Yeah right... Nice try Take 2, not gonna fall for that one, I've heard of 0 successful activations and I started trying at midnight.

I'm guessing, and this is very much a guess, that part of the deal with allowing Steam to sell the game on launch day was that they would wait 12 or so hours so that the first purchases would go through retail. The time

I *highly* doubt that Valve would choose to delay their activation of the game on their own, as it makes no sense from a profit PoV. This setup ensures that the first wave of purchases are retail.

For me, it apparently makes no difference; I forgot that the nearest Wal-Mart is in San Jose, and I honestly don't feel like getting in the car and driving half an hour just so I can play BS before I go to sleep tonight, and that's assuming the activation really does come online in half an hour. :P

Actually.. and don't quote me on this... I wouldn't be surprised if it would let you get it off Steam. Try starting the preload, see what happens (you don't have to actually buy it to start the preload).

Yeah they gave me the same crap about 6am EST now... I asked why they told me that the activation servers were *already* active the first time and he just ignored me... I'm going to email securom, attempt to call them and if I can't activate when I wake up I'm returning this and getting it for the 360 so I don't have to deal with this.

I, like a lot of you, bought this at midnight and I have the same problem. I sent out an email to securerom, and I called up 2k, and when I talked to the tech guy he said they were having issues with the server and that it'd be up in 2 hours. This was at 12:30 CST. Seems like none of us can get a straight answer.

I always seem to have problems whenever I buy a game the day it is released. I was hoping this time would be different since I was really looking forward to playing this game for such a long time; the first stub of an article in Game Pro. =(

Activation for a single player game is lame. Support bumped up the the time till activation over and over. Walmart will not take it back cause it's open. Also in Aust and have ordered via Steam. Pre-loaded and just waiting for the countdown timer to go away :) .

And TBH, I much preferr Steam / Digital Distrubution these days. Means that here in Oz we actually get titles much sooner, and at times also cheaper. No need to store heaps and heaps of CD's / DVD's and package materials. Not to mention, the number of times, I have lost a damm serial code while still owning the physical media. I have a room full of game boxes and CD's / DVD's and manuals etc. And then there is the patches, My home File Server has more drive space allocated to various Game's patches than anything else.

At lest with deliverly methods like steam, I can if I need backup the main files to save downloads later, or as it is, I just re-download the titles I want if I feel like going back to them.

So over the need for boxes etc, after many years of 2-5+ titles a month it just becomes a hassle with the number of boxes / manuals, media and patches.

And all the above, is nothing more than a feeble attempt to help take my mind of the remaining 10 or so hours left on the steam counter :D .
