View Full Version : Mouse acceleration in the PC demo
Hi,
Just been playing the demo abit, looking great! Wondering though, if anyone has been able to turn off the god damn awful mouse acceleration? I've been through the two ini's and turned off the reduce mouse lag stuff but it's had no effect. It could be something to do with the XBOX controller options but I havn't really played around with that yet..
Thanks!

i didnt have acceleration when i played it on my computer. it is probably something in the windows options you need to change, or get a more compatible mouse maybe.
Hmm, will keep looking then.. been playing UT2004 for years with my MX518 and had no probs.
Cheers

I have a MX5128 as well, and the mouse movement did feel a little... off. It didn't feel like lag, but it wasn't stiff... I'm sure how to describe it.
Even in the menu's if I drag the cursor slowly from the left side to the right, then quickly bring it back it will reach the opposite side in almost half the distance of my mouse mat atm.
Horrible feeling, I'm not using SetPoint btw just standard Win XP drivers (with the accel registry fix). Still no luck finding the culprit command for this yet :(

Yeah this can happen with vsync on/off or sensitivity low (I also have an mx518). If it's acting up trying changing the speed of the mouse up a bit (with the button above the wheel) or up the sensitivity in the game options (if you can).
I noticed this on games that I play at higher resolutions for some reason (with a n 8800gtx).

Ok so it's acceleration that's the problem rather than the 'stiffness' I usually get then?
Will have to test it out when the demo finishes d/l hope it's nothing too severe.
Found the bugger!
Dunno how I missed this when I started looking a hour ago >_< but in your Default.ini under [WinDrv.WindowsClient] you wanna change CaptureMouse=True that to CaptureMouse=False.
I am using 1600 DPI with a sens of 2 currently and getting no accel \o/.
8800 gts, 1280x960 @ 120hz, v-sync off.

Thank you so very, very, very much. I could not stand the mouse acceleration in the PC demo and it's nice to have a fix for this before the retail game even hits the shelves. Thanks again!

Good find.
However I just played through the demo twice (at different resolutions) and the mouse worked perfectly for me.
Will try your tweak though and see if it feels even better.

Is autoaim function enabled by default ?
Didn't notice any autoaim here. :(

Yeah the pistol felt like it was "sticky" to the splicers a bit... a little bit... kinda annoying/not annoying... not that i'll be using guns very much

If it is said I feel like such or not.
But autoaim line in "default.ini" file. It sets "true" by default.
so I just curiosu.

Auto aim? I didn't feel any auto-aim. Maybe it's been disabled elsewhere which overides the default.ini file.

Can you copy that here? I had a quick search for "auto" and "aim" but found nothing like a auto-aim function.
Maybe its something to do with the 360 version and was left over on the PC side, I deleted all of the XENON* stuff from my ini's so Bioshock would start up after :P
BTW, anyone managed to get seperate sensitivities for the game & menus like in UT2K4?

I noticed this as well, I was wondering how to turn it off. If anything this made aiming much harder than it should be.
thanks for the acceleration fix. :)

so capturemouse=false kills acceleration? can someone with a properly set up mouse (1:1 windows speed, pointer precision OFF, and registry fix) confirm this?

question for the devs: did you guys even test this game using a mouse? I cannot under any circumstances believe that no one who played this with a mouse asked for a way to kill the acceleration.
I listened with great hope to the podcast about the PC version where they go on and on about how they are diehard PC first person shooter players and how they are gonna make this a quality PC FPS with "tight controls" (direct quote) and how it's not a port. What nonsense, you guys have this ridiculous acceleration forced on us (feels like a 360 analog stick accel. curve) and nobody even bothered to add an option to disable it, or even tell us in the readme file how to do it! Name one other PC FPS game that forces us to play with acceleration even though we have it disabled in the Control Panel and/or mouse drivers, and in the damn registry too. I bet you can't find one, because people dont want it. It makes consistent aiming impossible.
I have been playing CS:S online since beta with the same mouse and same 100% acceleration-free settings. My 180 turn is 15cm, every time. I have set up my other key games to behave the same way, including Rainbow 6 Vegas which uses the same technology so don't blame it on the engine. In bioshock, my crosshair is all over the place, it's impossible to aim quickly and consistent. makes me so angry i refuse to buy the game until i know for a fact this is fixed (now that we have a 3rd pary fix for the FOV ****, i would have waited for that too, +horz is another genre standard we dont care what your "vision" was), and half of my very large CS:S clan feels the same way.
Precise mouse response is the #1 most important thing for a pc fps and you completely ignored it, or never noticed but i refuse to believe that, or hacked in the 360 analog code to the mouse and said **** it.

There also seems to be a problem with laser/optical mice at high resolutions/dpi on their own affecting it; more testing required, but some info/input in this thread: http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5754&page=2

I can't stand playing the game. Sure, I have fixed the acceleration but I still got extreme mouse lag! Can't aim for ****... Oh, and I've got a high-end pc with all the latest drivers bla bla bla.

Long Story: CaptureMouse=False does not solve the issue at all for me. Rather it made it... different. In addition to normal acceleration now, I get a kind of permanent acceleration, the mouse will move very slowly when I first load a game, and as I move it around it will get faster and faster (this stops at a point, but then it still has normal accel), if I move the mouse very fast, the sensitivity will remain extremely fast until I load a game, while if I never move it fast it will never get that high... very weird stuff. I'm a pretty serious fps player, have always had accel disabled in windows via the registry and have the cpl mousefix applied, as well as a mouserate hack that unlocks my diamondback to run at 1000 hz instead of 125, and I really can't suffer this absurd sluggish mouse, it feels like I'm moving the damn thing around on ice coated in a think film of mud. This is the full version btw, not the demo. It is every bit as much of a problem in the full version
Short Story: CaptureMouse=False does not fix the problem, it just makes accel have some strange problems.
PS: If anybody has the gall to tell me to turn my sensitivity down, you have been warned :p
sorry, mistake.
It's in bioshock.ini not in default.ini.:p
My Bioshock is still locked for another 25min (UK Steam release) I'll take a look after though and see if I see similar results.
Other than the CaptureMouse=False thing, I disabled both ReduceMouseLag options in the same ini (2nd is something like DoubleBufferMouseLag) could give that a try if you still experience acceleration. As for 2K not testing the game with a mouse & these settings I think it would be hard/impossible for them to test all possible combinations of mouse/drivers/os'.
The CaptureMouse & ReduceMouseLag functions are present in UE2 (UT2004) and presumably in UE3 aswell, so it lets people customise the input to what's best for their setup. In UT2004 there was MouseSmoothing options aswell which often made the input feel laggy/delayed/unresponsive, but I can't see anything like that in the Bioshock demo.. they might of left them out totally or just not in the ini, would be good to have a dev comment on that :)

Last poster is right, CaptureMouse=False DOES NOT DISABLE ACCELERATION, it just changes how it behaves. Many people that say they dont feel acceleration just havent set up their mouse properly and play with acceleration all the time and they dont ever notice. Someone who has been playing with ZERO acceleration like myself and a few others, notice it IMMEDIATELY and we hate it. We rely on our 180 degree turn being the same exact distance every time no matter how fast we move the mouse (for me it's 15cm) and that just can't be done in Bioshock. I seriously doubt the PC port devs even tested this game with a mouse or they just suck at CS:S and other online shooters.
