View Full Version : Borderlands PC unlock date -why so late?
There is a lot of fuss on the Gearbox/Borderlands official forum about the PC version being unlocked 6 days later than the console versions.
We were told early on this was due to last minute tweaking, but now that the PC version is actually being sold all over the US, this argument seems a bit weak. Yes- the street date of the 26 has been blown all to heck.
It's reasonable to assume the real reason was to boost sales of the console version that released on the 20th. Nothing unusual about that-In fact, it's pretty commonplace these days.
Lets be real. Anyone buying the console versions because of this gap has already done so. The arguments for any more delay in unlocking the PC version that so many of us already have has been diluted to pointless.
People are squealing like stuck pigs on the forums about unlocking the game early. It's not really fair to blame Gearbox for this, since that would be 2K's call, so...
Can anyone from 2K offer a Yes/No/Kindly pound sand on this one? I would gladly post the response on the Gearbox forums. This would go a long way towards silencing the thunder.
Many thanks,
frooop

I am also a costumer who bought the game today at my local retailer. I had no clue that there was a different release date and was shocked that i could not install the game that i just purchased. If the game ain't unlocked until tomorrow, i will simply bring it back to the retailer and purchase another game.

Well, the simple fact is that you cannot return opened PC software ANYWHERE. You've officially been screwed. Sorry mate.

Honestly, I think this will be the last game I buy if there's some weird shady BS marketing reason to delay it beyond the console release. PC gamers suffer from having the game ruined on a lot of level from friends who play it on consoles, and it's just not a fair system to be honest. Loyal PC gamers should not be punished because companies cannot be bothered to lock down their software properly to prevent piracy.
I thought about buying this game on the PS3 until the Steam version, which I've already pre-ordered, unlocked. Then I thought, "What? That's exactly what they want me to do. Well F that!"
Crap like this needs to stop, it's only pissing off an already raped over PC gaming community in an effort to promote some mythical console sales spike.
I'm done with it.

I act confused and tell the retailer that i can't install the software (which is true). It simply doesn't work (which it doesn't). I will simply ask for a different game, as long the money stays at the retailer they behave nicely.

Promote mythical console sales? More like promote piracy. I'm pretty sure at least a few people sitting staring at a box and activation screen will jump on a download if it becomes available. I already have it pre-ordered on steam so there's no sense in that for me, but I'm willing to bet people with a retail copy would do it just to spite 2k at this point.
I know some of you are a bit caffeinated about this, but let's try to keep this thing G-rated.
Better the chance of an official response if we keep our heads.

This isn't always true. I know the GameStops around my area will take back a game if there is a problem. If someone returned a copy saying it would not work, they would allow a return, and then have to ship it back since they could not sell a copy that didn't work. [Even if the reason it didn't work was because he server was not up yet.]
So it is possible, although it would hurt the game if they had to send copies back.

Ok guys I am normally not someone who rages easily but this one really really enrages me.
Now we all know that the Street date has been broken by quiet a few shops, but i doubt that it ever happened on such a big scale.
Saturn/Media Markt (for those who dont know them: They are the biggest chain of Electronic Markets in Austria and Germany) have EVERY version of Borderlands ( inculding the pc one) on sale(apparently since yesterday). And i am not talking about single copies, hidden somewhere in the store, NO theres hundreds of copies RIGHT at the entrance on the " new releases" shelves.
Now theres really no more reason to why the game shouldnt be unlocked for every1 .... I mean, hey i preordered and paid so i can play the game sooner then every1 else.

The fact is, the PC version of this game has been sitting in the back room at game stores ever since they got copies of the console versions, so they could have easily sold the game on the PC at the same time as the console release. It's been verified by Best Buy, Gamestop, and several other stores to be the case. This was a power play by 2K/Gearbox meant to increase console sales.
This crap doesn't work, the people that want to buy the console version are going to buy it, and I know of almost 1400 people in a certain shady ass Efnet IRC channel that no doubt downloaded the 360 version early as well.
Tip 2K/Gearbox: Stop screwing your PC customer base or there won't be a PC customer base at all.

Sadly... I don't think we'll ever get an official response from 2K on the forums here.
It'd probably be more effect for a large group of people to just keep calling up 2K on the phones and asking for them to release the game early because of the PC street date breakage.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
It's not just hard copies of the game either. I have a Digital Download for the game from Best Buy which will not complete on it's final step. I find it silly and the only "Optimization" they'll be doing is allowing everyone to play it on the 26th. Stop screwing the consumer 2k, really just 'release' (as if it hasn't been already) the game this weekend, problem solved.

Hey 2k! Glad to see your heads are still firmly entrenched in your asses. Keep up the good work in there! I'm sure you can manage to ruin a few more releases if you just keep at it like this! First Bioshock, now Borderlands, lets go for a threepete!

2K Games is making a bad business decision at the moment in my humble opinion. Part of the PC gamer community is currently in uproar because of what Infinity Ward / Activision did. There will be no dedicated servers in CoD:MW2 which made a lot of people (http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?dedis4mw) rage quit their pre-orders. All those gamers have some money to spare now. They won't spend it on Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising since it has online problems very similar to MW2, plus it got some bad reviews. Borderlands however did well in the gaming press and it is the only alternative to shooter fans who want something new. If they hear about another publisher treating PC gamers like second class citizens, they won't buy BL either. It is just psychology 101.

I'm in this same boat. I've been on edge about Borderlands since it first appeared in a magazine back in 2007. Two years later, I'm getting royally screwed over due to a marketing campaign and a lousy protection method. So while my friend goes on to rant about how much fun his game is, I get to wait a six full days until the game unlocks; after everything and a half has already been spoiled. No doubt if I saw some SecuROM skip program floating around on the web, I'd pounce right on it. I have no issue with paying the wonderful developers of this game my hard earned money; my issues lay in looking at a useless box because of a case of bad publishing.

Registered just to put in my two cents.
I was so excited to see that my pre-order for Borderlands had come in today when just yesterday I received an email telling me that my shipment would arrive on the 26th. Then a friend tells me that I apparently can't even play because of online activation? Ohhh the day was going so well up until then! This is a totally lame move 2K. Please strongly consider unlocking the game for your loyal, paying customers.

Many people are in the same boat, the game has been gold for a LONG time now, and its only 2k holding it up. Ive verified my bestbuy to have the PC version since saturday, unable to release till the 26th.. which is garbage.
what a viral ad campaign.. and terrible marketing exploiting the higher cost of console games, having the game Devs say... "optimization". sad. 2k games along the lines of another bad publisher in a lot of peoples eyes.. gj
also i verified today the gamestops near me will have copies to sell the 24th, 2 days time. STOP SCREWING PEOPLE OVER

The worst part is the PC version, which was apparently delayed for optimization, has UI issues that will need to be fixed for a patch! If you're going to make a ****ing excuse to delay a game at least make it a good one! Do they think we are a bunch of idiots? I'm really looking forward to this game and I like GBX so I will buy it anyways but this is the last time I'm putting up with this crap!

I've registered here for the sole purpose of supporting the opinion that the unlock date needs to be addressed by 2k Games.
One point that I would like to make is that a lot of us PC gamers are working stiffs for whom weekends provide more opportunities to game than weekdays. It would therefore be exceedingly ideal for 2k to pull in the release date to this weekend rather than leaving it on Monday.
Please consider, thank you.:)

Also speaking in favor of some action - it's understandable that the street date breaking may have not been a fault of 2K, but considering the position this puts you in - you can gain alot of favorable word of mouth AND many happy customers by choosing to move up the unlock date.
The ball is in your court and while we simply have to endure and understand if you choose to maintain the original unlock date, there's alot of good press and happy consumers to be had if you make a decision to move the unlock date up :)
I sure as heck would be happy and I know many others would too! Please consider this.

Yes i know there was bound to be one eventually! But lets show that we as the customers would like some customer service as we have paid for the game that we cannot use. Goes with any product you purchase, if it dosnt work its "faulty" in a sense - of course in this case its not faulty but a publisher fault that has to be fixed.

Oh.
P.S. I'm j/k. But the people at 2k should know they have a massive market out there for this game right now, people are anxiously waiting to play this game like it were Halo or Call of Duty or something of that nature. Tell them there are thousands of people who have already fully paid for the game, and even more who plan to go to the store and purchase it as soon as it is available. I am personally in standby and am ready to drop what I'm doing(unless it's work or school) and go pick up this game.

I personally have the 2k Download Manager on my Computer from a Best Buy/Digital River email since the 21st and have not been allowed to finish the download. There are just so many people who have a void game at this point, we really should be able to play.

I too have purchased the game via BestBuy and have had 90% of the game sitting on my harddrive. I can't download Part 11 and Part 1 is a 0KB .ee file.
Since then, BestBuy has pulled Borderlands from their digital store (even searching Borderlands brings up nothing) and the Borderlands_DownloadManager.exe I had downloaded to get the game has been taken off and now reports a 404.
My question is, will I be able to play the game in time? Will I have to redownload the now non-existing download manager? Will Borderlands reappear on BestBuy?
As for the matter at hand, I think it's silly to have everyone wait to 26th when the game is so widely available, in a number of different places and formats. EU to US, people have the game, and can't play...
PowerCosmic
10-22-2009, 02:44 PM
This really shouldn't become a boxed vs. digital download argument.
The bottom line is that the cat is out of the bag: the PC delay was unwarranted. There was quite obviously no "optimization" that had to be performed on the PC version this past week. Also, retailers have quite obviously had available stock this past week as well. In short, the status of the PC version of Borderlands was NEVER a factor for release date!
Releasing the console version early was nothing more than a manipulative marketing strategy which is becoming all too common.
We, the consumer, have every right to demand better customer service. "The customer is always right" used to be a common business mantra so what is this PC gamer=2nd rate consumer bull****?
Could my (and many others') assumptions about the nature of this delay be incorrect? Sure.
But at the end of the day, 2k should be more concerned about the public perception than manipulating console vs pc sales and unfair DRM.

Well they will be if they wouldn't be allowed to play with the rest of us, they're actually in the minority of people who purchased from a retailer (via digital download) that didn't break the street release date. Hell, as I said before even the Digital Download service from other retailers broke the release date.

Trust me you're not the only one, I've been asking myself the same questions. I believe if 2k games updates their installer we'll be fine. I still have my installer but when I go to install the last file, 11, it tells me the downloader is out of date.

I was quite confused as to why my copy wouldn't install.
I almost brought the game back to the store. I decided to check on the internet for help. I stumbled on the gearbox forums first and couldn't find anything quickly. Then found an obscure link to here, where I got my answer.
Just saying that:
1) This issue is confusing to customers.
2) I suspect a very small minority of people will go on the internet to try to understand what doesn't work. How many people look at internet forums do you really think?
3) How many of them, this minority, will actually find the answer? (I almost didn't find my answer because I only had so much time to waste on this issue and landed on another forum)
4) People WILL try to bring their game back to the store.
5) They will remember the bad experience. They don't remember their own social insurance number, but they do remember crap like that.
PC gaming doesn't need to be anymore confusing.

All of your points are true. See what they need to do is allow people who got the game early (a large amount of people) to be able to play the game. Otherwise they're gonna be PISSED and take the game back. What they really need to do before this spirals out of control (and it will very soon in the next few days if they don't make a decision on this) is allow everyone to play. Now this may be easier said than done, but they absolutely need to do this soon.

If it was ready on the 20th then allow us to play on the 20th which this seems to be the case. I've emailed you about this and just let all of us on the PC play the game we ahve already bought.

I am also new to these forums and I'd just like to put in my two cents.
I am very glad that this game is coming out, it looks amazing. A Pirates dream, if you catch my drift. xD
I understand the reasoning behind putting the release date to the 26th... But, now since the game is 100% ready to be played, I don't really see a reason to hold it back any further.
Whether I play to today, or I play it on the 26th isn't going to change my decision on how good the game is going to be.
I am pre-loading on steam right now, and I wanted to thank you guys for this game, and if making the activation early would only make my day even better.

Hello 2K Forums.
I would like to express my gratitude to the 2K staff for addressing this issue and not ignoring it, but as a customer of your games, I am here to voice my concern.
I pre-purchased Borderlands off Steam and have been in great anticipation of this title for very long. I have the game pre-loaded on my computer, and other consumers have their copies as well, but we cannot play them.
Please unlock this game as early as possible. I would like to use the product that I have purchased and am in posession of.
I realize this has been said many times before, but it's worth saying again.

I've been rather post-happy at the GBX forums. Just not much of late since I had my say.
I'm mostly lurking now in fear that GBX, 2K or Steam will figure out how to fill my copy with fuzzy bunnies cuz' I helped stoke this fire;)

Hey 2k and pitchfork wielding masses.
Just wanted to drop by and offer my 2c.
I'm pretty excited about Borderlands. I've read the reviews, watched the videos, seen some gameplay (On the consoles) and I have to say, it's a pretty sweet looking game. My excitement comes not only from seeing things like this, but also the fact that I have preloaded through steam and eagerly await the 26th.
Honestly, I didn't understand the reasoning behind delaying the PC version, but I knew about it when I ordered it, and I was willing to suck it up and wait. Midterm week is over, and I look forward to de-stressing next week with Borderlands.
\I don't really mind the delay, partly because I have a few friends who work in the Q and A part of 2k Los Angeles, and I know how hard they worked to make this game the best it could be. If I have to wait a few more days, it's not gonna kill me.
That being said, if 2k and Gearbox manage to release this game before the 26th, I will be just as happy as waiting, only earlier. We, as consumers, don't really know why the PC version is being delayed, and there are endless amounts of possibilities. They may not have the infrastructure in place to handle a mass of PC connections, or they may have learned of an extra-dimensional attack on their HQ and are currently in the process of beating back the alien hoard with keyboards and interns. Who knows?
I guess the whole point of this long winded post is be patient, plan on waiting until Monday, and be grateful if they release the game early. Many people knew about the release date being set at the 26th, and that should be your baseline for excitement.
And to all my friends at 2K L.A. we should do Karaoke soon. I miss it.
Thanks,
Byron

I also signed up to voice my concern over this potentially irksome matter. If GB needed a few days to work on a patch just say so and be done with it. If however this was just a ridiculous marketing stunt as some have suggested just say so and be done with it, and while you're at it unlock the game so people will be less angry.

Also here to call on 2k to release Borderlands worldwide as soon as possible. There's no longer any need to hold back the PC release anymore. Like stated earlier in this thread, several shops in Europe are already selling the Borderlands PC version. We're sitting here with it installed, either from a retail purchase or from Steam / D2D. It's out... It's time to take action and let people play what they paid for. Yes - Retailers made some serious mistakes by selling it prior to the release dates, but were past that to be honest. Now it's time for action. It's time for Borderlands.

With you on that one, since I'm European. I feel like we got Fag O' Nature crit'd with a much much later release than anyone else, for no apparent reason other than being European. We know for a fact, that the game is sitting here in our local stores ready to be sold. Why is our release date a week later then?

2K/Gearbox, if this delay was to gain 360 customers until the 26th, I think it's time to call it a day on the plan. Most people who are going to cave in and spend the extra cash have already done so.

That, and I see no valid reasoning behind the PC release dates, specially not the European one. Not now that we know for a fact they are sitting in stores, ready to be sold. The minuscule losses from people getting console versions instead of PC versions due to the later release dates will be made up by having a solid PC base anyhow.

Hey, also joined to support this unlock.
I too preodered it on steam, and am now preloading. I knew the change in release date from the 20th to the 26th, and was a bit suspicious about it from the beginning.
Now that the street date has been broken, and the console versions are out, there really isn't much sense in punishing those that purchased it legitimately via steam or other programs/services.
I appreciate the fact that Elizabeth is helping us out, and I would like to express my gratitude to her in that regard.
I hope we don't seem like a pack of raving fanatics, frothing at the mouth. We just want to enjoy something the fine people at 2k and Gearbox made for us, in a timeframe similar to our controller wielding comrades.
I too would like to plead for a friday unlock, as has been stated countless times by others either in work, college or school; this would most likely quiet all raised voices, and still quivering viens. I know I for one tried to clear out the entire end of the month for this game, and I would be very disheartened if the PC people didn't get at least some concession now that the cat is out of the bag.
Again, I am heartily greatful that 2k and GB are taking this issue seriously.

Zounds like a plan.
I wonder what is involved in this kind of decision. I know it isn't as easy as saying yes or no, but what exactly needs to be discussed?
I'm not going to assume that the answer would be unanimous, but... I don't know it just seems that the obvious answer from the community is that they are in favor of an early unlock.
I guess the other issue would be that of sales figures that are generally put out on mondays? They trying to figure out the best way to anticipate the demand in the following weeks by using another means?
I don't know. Seems pretty straightforward, but then again we are only looking at the very tip of the iceburg.

I think an early unlock would make from some great publicity for 2k games, because i'm sure it will be front page news for every PC blog out there. Also, gamers who bought this product will remember this for their next PC game purchase and when seeing the 2k label know it's a company that listens to their customers.

EDIT: Also, to state the obvious; I'm with the "Pro-Release" movement.

I am a pre-purchase customer from Steam as well as my wife and 2 other friends (4-pack price is awesome). I have been reading a LOT of forums about this game and it seems that most people are almost RABID to play this game. Which by the way it DOES look awesome. As far as the release of the PC copies in stores early I think that if it was put on the shelves and sold as a full copy of the game then the retailers should be taken care of by the company. They broke their end of the deal, unless of course it was 2K or whoever that told them to release it early. In the end though it IS going to reflect poorly on the developers of the game, even if it's not rightfully so.
Like several people before me have said I think that if the company released the game early, in time for this weekend’s peak gaming times you will have a LOT of extremely happy customers and it would only stand to make the company look good. It shows that in spite of the errors of unrelated stores that this company is the bigger "person" and helps out the PC gamers.
I personally do enjoy the fact that someone from the Company "Elizabeth" is at least out here on the forums acknowledging everyone’s comments. I hope that you ignore all the people on here trying to go all crazy, they are all just foaming at the mouth to bite into your new product. So don't look at it from the negative aspect, you guys should all be impressed by such a huge response to what you are working on. Hopefully you'll all remember this loyalty from the PC gamers out here. Thanks for reading this long winded post!

Supporting the cause here, i see not releasing the game quite detrimental to sales. Gamers who aren't familiar with the release date have purchased copies over in Europe to find the game incapable of working, leading to frustrated consumers with what i would imagine, a lot of complaints and returns. If possible, i hope 2K can manage to release the game early, avoiding any problems with negative views on the company.
The console versions are sold out in most places, so why not?

Think of your still-locked game like a Steam pre-load. You'll be able to play it (almost) the instant it's unlocked. ;D Sure, that's not how things are supposed to go down when you have the disc in your hand, but it's better than raising your blood pressure =3

Registered an account to post RE this. Seems general consensus here is an early release
I still don’t get how delaying PC release will increase sales (can anyone enlighten me? – is there logic behind this at all?). For example, I won’t go out and grab a PS3 copy just because PC release is next week.
Wouldn’t word-of-mouth and more exposure (time wise) increase sales? – I’ve already convinced 5 people to buy Borderlands 3 of which were not considering buying at all originally. Two more of my friends are waiting to see what the games like before purchasing. The way I see it the more exposure time-wise this game has the more sales. Logical?
That being said, I believe that the producers can release whenever the hell they want. HOWEVER, reason for release in this instance are said to be “optimisations to the PC version”. It is hard to believe this for a number of reasons:
1) Discs already out at retailers
2) Devs had time to work on a DLC – illogical to start on DLC until original version is finalised.
So…possible outcomes
1) Release as per original deadline with day0 patch = Credibility for 2kgames
2) Release as per original deadline with no patch = Loss of credibility
3) Release early with no day0 patch = Show of goodwill
I don’t really care when this game comes out as I’m busy this weekend :D but if I were the manager responsible I’d be trying to avoid option 2 (I don’t come from a PR or marketing background so my judgement is probably not the best anyway - just an opinion).
My game is preloaded and ready for action whenever this is released.

Liz, I dont know who you are
or where you stand
or how much you care
or how much power you have
but let me say this
2k games and gearbox have an opportunity to do something with borderlands that has never happened in the history of video gaming.
Video games these days keep getting pushed back and pushed back further and further, developers are always falling short of their expected release dates, and having to push them back. This hasnt really been the case with borderlands, with the exception of the graphics transition to cell shading, which delayed the games release, and the "pc optimization"
In the history of video games, It is has been a rarity for a game to be released early. Can anyone name any examples? I cannot.
2k games is now presented with the opportunity to take a release date that was pushed back, and move it forward within the days before its release. Once again, correct me if im wrong, but I know of no video game that has been released early within the final 3 days.
Go down in video game history.
Make the front page of IGN, Gamespot, and whatever other video gaming news sources there are.
Release the game early

Ya know . sadly this was one of those games that I had been watching and was on my top "Have to have list"
I thought it was so cool that i talked the other 15 Hardcore players I game with into getting it .
and sadly games tend to only make me frustrated after i've played them . but this one has seemed to pull off the exact opposite .
I seriously don't know what your marketing department in thinking/doing but they just cost your company about 16 sales
after this little power move we just decided to pick up some other games from companies that weren't trying to be overly greedy .
I mean , if this is how you treat your PC consumers Pre-Release I hate to see how your going to treat them come patch time or time for DLC . but then again im sure since PC, XBOX, and PS3 consumers will all have their copies you'll pump out the DLC to Milk the cash cow
Hope you guys learn from this one .
Next time I'll make sure not to Hold my Breath and wish so hard :-(

I'm not just a messenger! But yes, we all work as a team, and yes, we were all working late tonight.
I tried asking the Gearbox devs on their forums about four days ago if they would be kind enough to provide answers regarding the supposed glitches, bugs, and issues in the PC version.
Maybe you can answer these for us, since it would seem they either cannot answer our questions or they have been busy working on other things. All of which is understandable, to some degree...
I'm hoping to get some answers from you (2k Team) as to if this game for PC is actually being patched as we speak, which would answer for the "optimization" response behind the PC version being held back.
Here are the questions that I am confident all concerned PC gamers have:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly. There are rumors that the PC version's menu has Xbox-style controls. Does this therefore mean that the mouse support promised in the PC platform is not present in this upcoming release?
Secondly: There have been numerous reports about A.I. suddenly ceasing to attack the player ingame, and bosses / a.i. triggers that glitch here and there. Is this something that is in fact existent in the PC version? And if so, is this being addressed currently by the Gearbox devs?
Thirdly: Item Duplication. Will this be addressed in the PC version? First and foremost, does this even exist for the PC platform? I believe item duplication might severely hamper the PVP arenas. But regardless of what my opinion is or isn't, my question I feel is an important one.
Fourthly: Voice Communication from what people have said does not have a push to talk key, nor does it allow a person to mute their microphone. Is this true? And if so, is there anything being done to address this issue?
Those are four questions that I feel are shared by a lot of us community members. Regardless of the release date, I feel these questions are probably a higher priority than attempting to release a game early.
(Especially if it has not been properly QA'ed).
I don't believe any of us care so much as to the "why" or "how" these truths came about, but rather the "when" these issues will be addressed and "what" is being done about it.
I'll end by saying that I at one time was excited about this game beyond fathom, and hearing that this game was developed by Gearbox, I didn't hesitate for a second to purchase it. Now I am having second thoughts after having visited Gearbox's forums first, and now yours.
I hope that these questions can at least be read and discussed among your team.
Most importantly, I hope that these concerns can at least be responded to. Even if the release date is kept at the 26th.
Your responses would be greatly appreciated, and truthfully will be a deciding factor of whether I will be doing business in the future.
Thank you.

Hi, I just registered to give my thoughts on this whole matter as a customer and consumer point of view.
You guys at 2k need to make the decision of unlocking the game for us, we as customers/consumer don't care or view your problems in your point of view. When we get our hands on LEGAL copies of the game we expect it to work. The whole problem is with the stupid SECUROM, why use it? It's not going to do anything against piracy I tell you that right now, it only causes more.. in this situation especially when you have a customer who bought the game and it doesnt work, they could possibly turn to piracy. Please use this situation as an example of your horrible decision to use SECUROM. People are selling it early on the streets which happens to MANY games and I haven't heard many games out there that uses SECUROM.. maybe if you guys didn't decide to use SECUROM then this whole mess wouldn't really have mattered but you guys chose to so I hope you guys can at least listen to your "valued" customers and unlock the game for steam users (just to be fair) and retail versions.
Thanks for reading.

So, since 13 hour's and 188 post's here and thousands of post's in Forum's all over the World now, I repeat non positive Answer came over your Board, so what the Hell you're waiting for, 2k ?
Settle down, this sort of thing takes time, and it isn't necessarily 2k's fault that this debacle occurred in the first place.
I can tell you, nearly all Stores in Germany sell's the Legal Copy of Borderlands PC. We PC Gamers have the Law and the right on our Side, and it seems to be too, in all other Country's all over the World. Do you love all the bad Publicity, or what, 2k ?
Again this was primarily caused by retailers breaking the street date, which breaks their contract or whatever with their producers.
So do something , now, befor Weekend is coming and we're sitting in front of the Borderlands Cover and can not play, why you so decided !
As I said earlier, this sort of thing seems to take a good amount of time, and isn't as easy as pushing a button, or some guy saying 'Ok fine, unlock it early'. Also, wouldn't you prefer to wait a few hours longer for an answer, or just have them come right out and say 'No'?
To everyone whining and asking 2k is they want/enjoy bad publicity; take a breath and settle down. They are professionals, and I can assure you they already understand the potential benefits and drawbacks of unlocking early. Just wait. I mean, if they didn't care about their consumers, why would 2k Elizabeth been up all night, reading the forums and occasionally telling us that she was doing her job?
Well, it could all be part of an elaborate ruse, using her to placate the masses, while pushing the unlock date even farther into the future (lol). But I suggest we all just wait and see what happens. If noon or mid afternoon swings around, and there is still no indication of information, than I would start getting antsy.
But in the meantime, just settle down, enjoy life.. AND SWING YOUR KEYBOARD ABOVE YOUR HEAD IN AN UNQUENCHABLE RAGE, SMASHING IT REPEATEDLY ON YOUR FACE, LOUDLY PROCLAIMING YOUR DESIRE TO PLAY THE GAME. (kidding)

@Redcrusher
I understand what you're getting at but they did say (Gearbox dev) that they'll set the release back if the release broke out in a massive scale, because they won't screw customers. Don't make statements and promises that aren't going to happen. It's one thing after another.. no cd-key, SECUROM, and now not keeping their word (at least not yet). Like I said before customers/consumers don't need to see or care for that matter for what they "screwed" up on.. especially after all these negative things going on.

@Redcrusher
I understand what you're getting at but they did say (Gearbox dev) that they'll set the release back if the release broke out in a massive scale, because they won't screw customers.
Forgive me, as it's still early in the morning, but do you mean, set closer? I know the quote said set back, but for some reason to me that means they push the date back.
I understand all your issues with 2k and GB- I'm more than a little irritated as well, but all we can really do at this point is wait.I'm sure they will come up with a solution that makes everyone happy. Just sit tight and hopefully something will pop up today. If it doesn't, chances are you, me and everyone else who got the PC version will be waiting until Monday.
And as unsatisfactory-and annoying as that is, we have done all we can do for the time being.

Yea it means earlier release date but at the very least they need to address this one way or another. Otherwise there will be alot more people coming on here and more phone calls they'll be receiving/complaints.
I would also like to point out that I looked around up till the 20th and every
ad every post everything I saw until I walked into the store and asked for my pre-ordered copy told me ALL versions Available on the 20th. Nothing said
PC on the 26th until I walked it. I thought it was a shipping thing so canceled my pre-order and went home to check steam. It was a very sad day to come home after the dentist to realize the game just wasn't out.
If It's Not Going To Be Available On The Same Day As All Other Versions DON'T Advertise It As Such. This Just Makes You A Lier And Hurts Your Customers.
Just my 2 cents.

I'd really appreciate it if 2K could atleast make the game unlock on the 26th for the countries that have to wait until the 30th.

Just so you know for future reference, if you can get someone you know in North America to buy the game and gift it to you, and then you pay them back, it can work in your favor. You currently get the game when it is released in the region of the person gifting it on Steam. That may change of course, but as of right now it's worth noting.

OK, first of all, big THANKS to Liz for saying at least something and keeping us informed, instead of just closing threads as GB does.
Here in southern germany, every single shop is selling the PC version, as the two leading shops Saturn and MediaMarkt started to do so.
In fact, some stores are out oft stock since 1300 local time. To be more precise, they are out of stock oft ANY version of the game.
Now with this kind of feedback from the customers, the decision to unlock the game for the weekend should be a bit more easy for 2K and GearBox. I don´t think any game this year was sold out as fast as Borderlands here in germany:D
So 2K and GearBox, let us all have this great game for the weekend and celebrate this success all together!!!!!!!!!:) :D

I just want to echo a point that I tried to make yesterday. While 2k may not have directly caused this violation of the street date, it is a symptom of a much bigger issue that I don't think a lot of PC gamers are seeing: we are being phased out!
Think about it. The only valid purpose of pushing back the PC release was to cause those on the fence (who weren't sure whether to buy the console or the pc version) to pull the trigger on the console version.
Now I know some of you are saying to yourselves "Why would they alienate PC consumers?" The logic is actually pretty simple:
How many of us PC gamers also own consoles? A good number I wager, and statistics shows that number is only increasing. But why encourage console sales over PC sales? Again, simple:
Consoles are all the same. They're easier to develop for. They're easy to port across. (relatively speaking) Just imagine how much extra cost and time goes into ensuring that a game is compatible with millions of possible PC hardware configurations!
PC game DRM exists for the same purpose of forcing us into making the decision to switch over from PCs. If they really cared about piracy, they'd be putting DRM on console games as well. As it stands, it's quite easy to pirate console games.
PC gamers are being alienated by developers and publishers with the intention of thinning us out and putting us in a corner. You'll have to buy a next gen console sooner or later. Just wait and see.

Thanks for all of the official attention. That was the thing most lacking in this situation.
And it bears restating, the XBox 360 version had its release date broken first. Fisrt Playthroughs had been completed before Steam started pre-loads or PC boxes hit shelves. Any comment that blames or insults the PC gamer in this situation seems illogical to me.

Well, until the developers and publishers pressure the console makers into providing the gamer choice of control schemes, there are some games I refuse to buy on consoles (FPS and RTS games, specifically). If Microsoft and Sony wish to give full keybord/mouse support on their consoles so I'm not forced into an archaic and ineffective control scheme for the games I like to play, then I'd consider playing those games on consoles, until then, I'm a PC gamer.
To the topic at hand, once again, thanks Liz for the later night updates.

OK Peter, calm down.
I understand what your point is, but you just misunderstand what your right is.
The game was announced for 30.10.2009 in germany, and just because the retailers sold it erlier, it is not your right to play it erlier.
In fact it is 2Ks and GBs right to stay with the release date they announced.
The other point is, if it makes sense for them to hold on to that date, as all sales broke loose and the people are hot to get started with the game.
That matter is now beeing discussed, and we will get an answer as soon as Liz got one for herself.
So no need to enrage, though i am as much disappointed as you and thousands of other players are.
We should just hope that they understand our points and are able and willing to start the game right away.

Fan boyism? This is the first time I posted on these forums, and I think I only have one or two gearbox/ 2k games besides. You can keep blubbering about laws and rights, but in the end it isn't going to do a damn thing.
Yeah, you are in europe and you get a later release date for some reason, and other retailers broke the street date. It's unfair that you can't play the game yet. Constantly crying about it and making noise is pretty useless at this point. Whatever happens, will happen.
Speaking of which, I live in the US, but I accidentally preloaded from steam using the Ireland download location. Will I still get the US version, or will I have to uninstall and preload stateside?
Chances are they will say or do something sometime today to clear up this mess. I hope.

It's worth pointing out that if you go to the official borderlands site (http://www.borderlandsthegame.com/) and click on 'buy now' (I can't link directly to it, it's a flash site) it shows all three versions of the game and says "Available Now." The ads posted all over Kotaku yesterday also proclaimed that the game was "Available Now!" without mentioning any specific platform. This is in addition to the youtube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1omVnfGVYw&feature=pyv&ad=3924648953&kw=borderlands) that 2K Games posted to youtube on 10/20 that shows all three versions of the game as "Available Now!" The little robot even says so...
In light of all this, I certainly wouldn't blame any retailer who decided to put the game out for sale despite what official release date was supposed to be. After all, all the game's ads indicate that it is "Available Now!"
So if you are a consumer, you see the game ads saying it's available. You go to the store and see it on the shelves for sale. You buy it and take it home only to discover that you can't play it until Monday. Or Tuesday. Or the 30th. You'd probably be confused and angry, and I don't think it would be your fault, or even the fault of the retailer....
In conclusion, please release the game on steam so I can play it this weekend. Thanks! :)

THE ROBOT LIED TO ME!
THE DATE IS A LIE!
Well, here goes.
I bought the game following the complete rush of awesomeness I felt watching several videos a few days ago. It got my hyped so much in so little time, it was basically the most impulsive purchase I have ever made. I knew I wasn't going to regret it.
Figures, I ran into a tiny, tiny problem.
Why? It is sold all over the world, here in Germany, in China; I really thought I might just give it back and be done with it. Why would any publisher want to do this? Get your sales on.
Fudge you, tiny robot, how can I ever believe you AGAIN?
@Redcrusher: Well, you might already noticed that his English is fairly... underdeveloped, a prominent accompanying effect being misuse of punctuation and... language? :D
@Peter: I couldn't completely decipher your ominous writing, but:
1. The term "cowboy" these times is hardly ever to be taken literally.
2. We Germans are NOT always friendly people.

What's really sad is that two of the genres that Borderlands borrows most heavily from (First-Person Shooter and Action-RPG) were both initially developed for and thrived upon the PC gaming platform.
Yet here we are roughly 15 years later and not only is the PC version treated as an after thought (console-style menus Gearbox?!?!), but the PC-gaming consumer is obviously seen as nothing more than a potential console-gamer convert.
