BD and LS: Where does the adam go?

I was thinking about this earlier:

Little sister's job is to procure adam from the dead bodies of raptures citizens and the Big daddies job is to protect them, but what do they do with the adam themselves? They certainly dont dispense it to the splicers else they wouldnt be so desperate to kill them...

What happens to all the adam they gather? Who gets it and what is it used for?

I haven't finished the game personally but my friend has twice, so I pretty much know everything that happens. If you REALLY want me to explain it and ruin an otherwise brilliant 20 hours of gaming bliss, just let me know... :)

Im trying as hard as possible to not spoil it for myself, but I took a quick (10 seconds) look at the bad ending and have also read a thread here that may have spoiled a minor detail...

I think I may crack before the game comes out :(

Don't worry you only have a little over 36 hours left. The whole city is a mystery. Who is Andrew Ryan? Who is Atlas? Who are you? Trust me, it's more fun to beat the game with only minor spoiler knowledge. Oh and if you read the achievements you will get minor spoilers. My advice: Save the little sisters the first time through.

I was thinking that maybe, when Rapture was less... destroyed, the LS Vents led to a few central chambers, where Scientists could painlessly extract the ADAM for research and Plasmid production and such, then send them off to get some more. Now, they got so used to their job, they still do ut, and maybe someone is still collecting the ADAM? *ahem* maybe Andrew Ryan maybe *ahem* :D Prolly not tho.

Andrew Ryan apparently gives ADAM out to loyal Splicers. Who knows you could be right.

Its released this friday here in the UK, and I ordered it off amazon which means I probably wont get it until a week or so afterwards :(

And Zion: that's exactly what I was thinking, but what would Andrew Ryan do with the adam?

I too would like to know this. I planned on killing them on normal the first time then saving them on hard the second time.
