Before you start flaming... ;)
...some background: I of course had Vita Chambers on the first time I played, and my first reaction when I ended up in one was, "Huh? What's this? Not what I want." and started to save and reload frequently instead, and I eventually turned them off. That's how I have played it since then, some 7 or 8 times, including survivor difficulty (where it of course was required to get all trophies).
Now, being a little bored with my other games lately, I thought maybe I can squeeze some more entertainment out of Bioshock. (As I said, I have all trophies, and have played some odd challenges like not killing any Big Daddies - except the three you have to kill, and not using any weapons except the wrench.)
So I figured, perhaps I should try it on survivor once more, WITH Vita Chambers, and NOT allow myself to reload from a save!
I'm in Farmer's Market now, and I have to (a little reluctantly) admit: The two guys from 2k I saw explain the reason for the Vita Chambers in an interview had a point. The experience is actually even better when you never stop/restart (like you always do in most FPS campaigns, no choice there). You never really leave the game, you continue playing.
I don't even think it makes it easier. Sure, you can "wear down" a BD for example by dying a few times, but on the other hand, when you spend your first aids and EVE and then die (and is resurrected), it's gone. You have to find more. (I've been in dire straits once already where I really had to struggle to find some more stuff. I don't remember it being so hard the first time on survivor - perhaps I've been more careless this time.)
(Another Sunday Rant brought to you by Scrounger. It's just one of those days I guess. :o)
