View Full Version : Official Collectors edition, Limited edition and normal edition thread

Untill now I thought that what people call the limited edition was the big box with the gubbins and the big daddy super toy but if you check www.amazon.co.uk theyre selling what they call a Limited Edition [Tin Case] for the exact same price as their normal edition.
This at first scared the pee out of me because Ive got what i thought was the limited edition (big daddy super toy edition if you will) for £40, which is a lot more than the £24.98 amazon lists for their LE! However, when i checked my order with www.game.co.uk it turns out that £40 is for the COLLECTORS EDITION of the game...
Soooo what the hell? there are three editions of the game? the collectors edition, which I take to be the thing everyone on the forum is calling the limited edition, the limited edition that amazon is selling which looks like it might just be the standard version but with a tin case and the normal edition which is like the Limited edition except in a PLASTIC case.
Nice job marketing this boys, reeeeeeal nice

Yep, 3 versions.
Tin case, Collectors and standard. Tho i dont think the USA can get the tin case one.
And the retailers arent meant to be calling it the LE I hear, its meant to be just called the tin case edition - but i cant see that name making copies fly off the shelf.
It's confusing me too. I started this thread on it a while ago, you might want to check it out as it kind of helps explain things...
http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3786
It is one of the more confusing releases to date though...

Sorry! :( I just saw your thread, i only searched for amazon.co.uk before making the thread :p my fault for laziness!
I wonder how many people have preordered what some retailers are calling the limited edition and are gonne be dissapointed when it arrives :(

Had a long msn talk with the shop owner I preorder at and finally got a final word from his supplier the one I pre-ordered has the figurine and the goodies but it took me half an hour:o
Right, after doing hours of research, talking to online representatives and being referred to publishers, I believe I have come up with the definitive answer to all your problems.
Outside of America, there is of course the Tin Box Edition which replaces the Standard Edition (I am guessing for a limited amount of time). It also seems that in the Special/Collector's Edition the Tin Box Edition comes with, so it does come in an embossed steel case! So if you buy the Collector's/Special Edition you are getting all the extras PLUS the embossed steel case in the big box. Alternatively, you can buy the embossed steel case version separately, known in some places as Tin Box version, Limited Edition etc. so don't be fooled into thinking this standalone embossed steel version is the Collector's Edition!
I hope I have made things clearer for all you Non-USA customers. I for one am relieved and happy!

I believe I have come up with the definitive answer to all your problems...
Yep that looks 100% correct to me. So if you are in europe and you want the big daddy figure, you need the Special Edition which is also known as the Collectors Edition, and not the Limited Edition.
In the states if you want the Big Daddy and the steel case, you could order the SE/CE from europe, but probably only on PC, the 360 one might be region locked.

I'd take the tin case over the figure which might be broken....but that's just me probably.
Boris_Neo
08-16-2007, 09:04 AM
So that makes 3 editions.
Here in France we just have two choices:
Normal and a collector edition that is 10€ more than the normal one.
Concerning the released date in europe, somebody was wondering why there was a few days between the release in North America and in Europe.
Almost all the time, those few days are here... I think it´s for the localisation.

This thread nearly gave me a heart attack, but after checking the EB's site and my receipt again, i can definitely say i have pre-ordered the Collectors Edition, with all the figurine and sound-track goodness.
It is a bit worrying though that I, and seemingly a lot of other people were unaware of the distinction and that there were 3 versions, i anticipate there may be some disappointed people come launch-day...

How is the USA getting screwed? bc the 60 dollar game (standard vision) doesn't come with a metal case? If ppl in the USA put up 10 extra dollars they get the steel case, big daddy, soundtrack, extra dvd, posters, artbook think something else in the big box. Not bad ppl in the USA should be happy to get the cardbroad slipover for nothing
Ppl outside usa usually have to pay more too (120.... over in Aus)

The steel case is not in the USA my friend. Pictures have been posted from people who got the US's Limited Edition early from Toys R Us. It's just a plastic case with that crappy artwork on it. The Regular case art looks 100x better.
The soundtrack has 3 songs on it, and some Big Daddy figures were broken in shipping. There is NO steel case in the US whatsoever.

I've only seen the collectors edition and the tin case edition for presale here in Australia, although that could be because I was only looking for the collectors edition. Anyway, it's not that hard to work out. It's only three choices. Or two. However only one has the Big daddy!

kaMMakaZZi9 its NOT that simple, from what i can tell the majority of the problem is in europe and not in the us!
In the us there are two version of the game, one is bog standard the other is the all-singing-all-dancing edition of the game that comes with a big daddy toy and AFAIK a steel case aswell. On the forum this us edition is called the Limited edition.
However, in europe what our retailers are calling the limited edition is NOT the all-singin-all-dancing version but instead its the bog-standard us version but in a metal case... I give up! daaaaaaamn yoooooou!!!!!!!!

Its not that hard to work out no, but you have to know there are three versions to be know theres any problem to work out! Up till today i had no idea people were selling a "limited edition" of the game that was just the normal game but in a steel box, and once i found out i had to check my order to make sure i was going to get what i asked for, if i hadnt found out i might have made a mistake.
And this is true for lots of people who preordered :( from this point onwards now its been cleared up its not that much of an issue if you want to order, but people who have ordered before now should check to see what theyre actually getting.

U.S. versions of Bioshock
- Collectors edition/Limited Edition , including all the stuff the E.U. Collectors edition has but does NOT come in a metal case.
- Normal edition, no extras and no metal case, just a bog standard xbox game
E.U. versions of Bioshock
- Collectors edition, bonus stuff, big daddy toy AND metal case, this is henceforth called the OMGWTFBBQ version of Bioshock
- Limited edition, this is just the game in a tin case, doesnt include anything else

I love soundtracks to games and make a point of collecting them whenever I can. Can someone who's actually heard the soundtrack confirm that there are only 3 songs included? I mean, God, what is that? A 10 minute CD? If that's true I'll feel genuinely misled. The box, meh.

I won't actually be PLAYING the European version, it'll be more just for collectors sake.
I may have missed it and I don't feel like reading back, but what other bonus goodies are in it besides the metal case?

I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting the European version on eBay as soon as it becomes available. Quit *****in' and throw down a few extra bucks if you really want it.
Before you do that you better make sure your 360 can play imports..... I know for sure you can't play games from japan. Also I know from my modded ps2 you can't play euro imports without a pal to nstc patch

I don't think they would waste a cd disc like that maybe only 3 original tracks with other oldtimly tracks from that era. 3 songs I never heard of a cd with that even the free simples that come in the mail

Man, I just don't know what to do. On the one hand, I want to get my PC LE and find out if by some act of God it has a metal case. On the other hand, I wouldn't buy a BD figurine for $10 (I'm sorry, but I'm just not into collecting THAT much). One of the major reasons I wanted the LE was the metal case. I figured that:
1) Metal case
2) BD figure
3) Full soundtrack
Was a great deal for the extra $10. With two of those gone/neutered, I'm not sure it's worth it anymore. Plus, we also find out that the slipcover for the PC version probably looks cooler than EVERYTHING in the LE? WTF?! And there is no embossed anything on the US LE? :( What a major letdown.

If that's the case, I could swallow it. I don't mind period music taking up a lot of space on the CD, I'd *prefer* more than 3 original tracks, but as long as it's not tossed in as an afterthought as money bait I'll be happy.

The international CE is ment for EU+AU+NZ, not for the US. IT's not uncommon that the international version of a game had different boxart or a couple of extra features.

If you want an example of the US getting less than people it's happened many times. Take games like Final Fantasy for example, where many countries were given extra features or games with more recent patch numbers to 'compensate' for the waiting or for whatever reason the developers want.
I swing between having sympathy and not caring. Here in Australia I'm consistantly disappointed by missing out on X or Y every month from the gaming world. We miss gaming conventions, we miss titles all together, we get stupid censoring or toned down versions, we get bad collectors editions, we dont get collectors editions at all... God, the list never ends. So, I don't know. Yay for being in Australia for once...

Well the EU version of MGS3 had a higher difficulty level and a few extra cammo options. Final Fantasy's always have different boxart and sometimes small ingame changes. So this wouldn't really suprise me, especially since they promised a steel case for the EU.

It still doesn't really come with what they promised.
We have tallied up the votes, read your comments, and are happy to announce the details of the BioShock Limited Edition. Available on August 21st (the same day as the regular BioShock edition), the LE will include a Big Daddy figurine, a “Making Of” DVD, and a soundtrack CD. The LE packaging will also be an embossed graphic designed by the winner of the Cover Art Contest going on now at www.cultofrapture.com.
The BioShock Limited Edition will be available to US and Canada exclusively at GameStop and EB for US$59.99 (PC LE) and US$69.99 (Xbox 360™ LE). The Limited Edition will also be available in other territories and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon.
I’d like to personally thank everyone who participated in signing the petition for the BioShock Limited Edition and those who voted about what should go inside the box. We had over 26,000 responses to our poll, and those votes were the deciding factor in what we choose to put in the Limited Edition. We wanted to make the package affordable, but valuable and special for everyone purchasing it, and I think we did just that.
I’ll be sure to post pictures of the packaging and goodies inside as they become available!
NOTE: I changed the sentence “The Limited Edition will also be available in Europe and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon” to say “other territories” instead of “Europe” as we have not yet ruled out any regions for the Limited Edition.
I don't see any "embossed" anything in the pictures of the 360 LE.
Yeah, to be honest I wish they'd just gone down the Halo 3 Legendary path and made it expensive enough for it to only appeal to the more 'hardcore' fans of Bioshock, but made the extra's extremely good.
Something like this old idea...
http://kotaku.com/gaming/bioshock/votes-tallied-bioshock-collectors-edition-contents-announced-254671.php
The high quality original tin with slip also and a cloth poster, original manual and stickers just make it so much more special.
No use crying about something that can't be changed now, but it is a shame that the collectors edition is more of a novelty for those with the money now rather than a real collectors item.
Who else votes we change the meaning of "CE" to "Confusion Edition". :p

That was a picture for voting for what we wanted in the LE. It included everything that COULD be included.

i agree it is abit dodgy tying to get more poeple to buy it, i am not personally bothered about the soundtrack but i know other poeple who would really love to have an indepth soundtrack
It annoys me most personally because I got the LE specifically for it -- I didn't want to download them via filesharing, I wanted to show my support for the inclusion by tossing an extra few bucks their way. Game boxes get shoved in my closet, and the figurine is nice enough but I wouldn't buy it individually. We'll see about the Making Of DVD. But I love game music, I've got the Deus Ex and Medieval 2 CDs in my car right now. I just wish they'dve been up front about things.

i'd gotten these "making of" dvds before and i can tell you that they're about 10 minutes long and they contain all of the videos you can see online

im not basing it on nothing im saying the americans thought they were getting the metal case and they didint, so theres no point in everyone in europe saying "they didint but we will our sites say so" the sites in amreica said the same things and they wre wrong just stop trying to get you hopes up based on early ideas of what could be in the LE
Like i said the american and eu releases are obviously different because over here we can buy whats being called a limited edition tin case, thats a fact and they cant in the us. So any argument about whats going to be in the eu stuff based on "well in the us this happened..." is obviously stupid, they arent the same thing!

From what liz said the metal cases were taken out of the us C.E. deliberately to keep the cost down (that was her implication anyway). If this is true then it doesnt look good after all for the chances of there being a metal case in the eu collectors edition either.
Imo this is disgusting considering there i NOOOOOOO PRICE DIFFERENCE between the metal cased L.E. and the normal edition on amazon.

Oh, I should also say that unless I go insane by Tuesday, I will probably be asking for a regular edition instead of the LE now. I would get the LE if it had a proper soundtrack, but 3 Moby songs when I don't even like Moby isn't really my cup of tea.

They are embossed, not metal, and really bad ass. we used the metal money to make you other awesome stuff -- like a resin big daddy.
also, as a note. like, 9 months ago i booked a trip to jamaica, and i'm here now. i'm sorry i'm not here all the time, but i'm checking in several times a day (there's no internet in room for some weird reason so i bring my laptop down to the lobby) but i AM HERE. also, a couple other 2K guys are here to help support me.

Sure it sucks we don't get one as well, but I'd rather have my figure (which could easily make up for the extra $10 or more) than have a box for holding odd **** that kids in the 50s thought was collectable.

Hi, I just read through all 19 pages (!)
One thing I've picked up: people are speculating that there are only 3 songs on the CD, but nobody has actually confirmed this. I think it started with one person saying "I heard the CD only has 3 songs." Now, that could mean that it has 3 long long songs, or it has 3 original songs and some Sinatra stuff as well, or that it does. Only. Have. Three. Songs.
Can somebody confirm/clarify this for good? (Presumably either a 2k person or someone who already has the LE or CE or whatever the heck it's called now.)
I'm really quite worried about this, because I quite like videogame soundtracks. Command & Conquer's was nice, if you were into techno. Grim Fandango's was just mind-blowingly amazingly perfect. MGS3 has some tunes that I ended up humming, and then wondering where the hell I remembered them from, so deeply were they embedded in my mind... And Bx looks like it has some great music. It'd be a real shame if they half-arsed it and really did give us just 3 songs...:( Also, we need a smiley of somebody crying.
RedEks
08-16-2007, 06:18 PM
Confirmed to have three songs. They took it to the absolute minimum and gave us 1 in-game song, and 2 remixed era music songs. My friend has the CD, it's not like there's some secret passcode that unlocks 50 other songs. He played the CD, only 3 songs came up. End of story.
Technically they weren't lying because the advertisement is really broad. You know, soundtrack featuring in game music(yup we got that one song) and music from that era(yup they gave us two). They didn't lie, but they just went the cheap way.

Check out the "frustrations" link, with details on the US L.E (big daddy set).
Good news is that the documentary is a quality one, 40 minutes long.
Not bad considering that's around standard length even for DVD style docs, but no chapter stops.
Bad news is it's 3 songs, but no word on the length of them.
Also, to the US L.E pictures without the steelcase, 2K Elizabeth said both editions would feature embossed fan art - well it's obviously missing from that picture of the US L.E set. It must be included surely, but not pictured?
But look at it this way, the US gets an exlcusive "limited edition" industrial type graphic cover for their plastic amaray case.
That, and there should be an embossed case around there somewhere too (that we haven't yet seen)?

Perhaps the big box itself is embossed?
Perhaps the early editions were mispacked?
Or maybe, like it's been confirmed, it's not there at all. But it should have been seeing as that was on the PR blurb.

Thanks for replying, I'm a little let down... of course, it's possible I could make my own soundtrack CD using the 3 songs, add a few period pieces and maybe record a location's music by pausing the game and feeding the speaker plug back into the recording socket... or something. I know you can do that, cos my bro did that to get another game's music. Then maybe I can paint the top black and score marks in with a compass to make it look like an LP... or something. Maybe not, I don't want it to screw up the disc drive.
Good to know the DVD is quite long, even if they are random. I like random things.
Also, about the steel case: I wouldn't have minded not having a steel case, but I'd come to expect it because everything was advertised as such. Taking the "metal money" (as liz puts it) and using it for the figurine is perfectly logical, but I would have appreciated being told this before the Europe LE announcement, so that I would know what I was getting. (I'm in the UK, so atm it seems kind of fuzzy whether or not we're getting a metal case... which is confusing. I'll just have to hope.)
