Hey guys, your favorite lurker here.
Got a question for Hatesink, because i sincerely believe that he knows everything: is it worth it to upgrade my computer for this? there's a few other games coming out that might be swaying my decision, but Bioshock is the main one. If not, i'll just grab it for my 360.
To Raveness: Why are you posts so eloquent? I can't say for sure that i've ever heard someone so articulate in a FORUM before; i've gotta say that it's both intriguing and confusing. Intriguing because i'm enthralled at the prospect of a forum in which people converse in the king's english, and confused because i thought correct grammar died a long time ago.

Hey guys, your favorite lurker here.Got a question for Hatesink, because i sincerely believe that he knows everything: Hey boynamedSUE, how's it going ;)
is it worth it to upgrade my computer for this? there's a few other games coming out that might be swaying my decision, but Bioshock is the main one. If not, i'll just grab it for my 360.Assuming you're working with a budget, and since you already have a 360, I'd say play it on the 360, since the main difference will be the input device (i.e. joypad rather than mouse and keyboard). I'd imagine the upgrade it would take to get it to run at the same quality on the PC as it will run on the 360 would be so much that it wouldn't really be worth it just to be able to play with a mouse, although you might feel differently (I know a lot of people do (personally I like console gaming and quite like joypads)). If you didn't have a 360, and if your PC was due for an upgrade, then it might be worth getting a PC that would run it.
I've summerised the most pertinent information posted so far re. system specs etc. in this post http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187&highlight=specs
...it should show that it's probably going to be pretty costly to get it to run as well on a PC as it's going to run on the 360.
Personally, if I already had a 360 I probably wouldn't upgrade my PC for BioShock, but I don't have one and so I'm seriously considering trying for a PC upgrade that might run it comfortably (although I really don't want to compromise on quality). The PC version does have it's advantages however— if you don't have xbox live (or whatever it's called these days) it'll be easier and less expensive to patch and add extra content via your PC's internet connection (and what you'd pay for xbox live, you could invest in your PC upgrade).
I often play games up to two years after release (when the hardware needed to run them at high quality is less expensive) If I were to do that with BioShock, I'd probably now be thinking more about upgrading my PC for Alan Wake (since if I'm going to be using a wheel it'd probably be more cost-effective to put the money I'd spend on a racing seat (for console play), into a PC upgrade (and so be able to use my desktop monitor instead of the TV)).
So the options I'm personally looking at at the moment is either upgrading the PC for BioShock, or buying a 360 for BioShock and waiting for Alan Wake before selling the 360 to help pay for the PC upgrade. Basically I'll probably do the latter.
Apologies if that's too much information (I just thought it might help you decide) ;)

one correction heatsink... Downloading updates and such don't cost anything on Live. You can do those with a (free) Silver membership.
Alan Wake is also coming to 360, so you wouldn't need to upgrade a PC for that either ^_^
I think that both choices are grand, and like heatsink said, it's mainly about how you like to play your games... With KB/M on a monitor, or with Controller on a TV.

Does that apply to the original XBox also (or is it just the 360?)
Also— can anyone tell me what the advantages of the 360 hard drive is in terms of gameplay...
Does it make gameplay faster or improve graphical quality?
Are there some games that can't be played without a hard drive?
Or is it just for movies and such?
I'm guessing you can't patch or download movies without a hard-drive is that correct?
Can I run the 360 with a PC monitor, or does it have to be a TV?
Apologies if those are dumb questions but I basically know virtually nothing about the 360.

Great! a 360 question-You can play games without the hard drive, but you'd need a memory card to save ect,I'm not sure about using a monitor, but an RGB cable gives a spanking picture, especially at 60hzt-theres never been a better time to get the premium model,a few stores are doing mega deals at the moment, the console, additional controller and 3 heayweight games for around£260 :) i think a few games require the hard drive GOW perhaps, the games do run smoother too.

I'm interested in whether I can run it on a monitor, because I want to play Alan Wake with a wheel, and the only practical way I can do that is by playing at my desk (driving seats are pretty expensive and I've not really got room for one).

The only thing you have to pay for with XBL is playing the games online. All the downloads and such are free.
As for hard drive advantages, there are slim to none, which is sad, because all games are made with the Core in mind.
the newer 360 arcade games will require a harddrive, as they're bigger than a memory unit.
You can patch/update without the hard drive, it's stored on the system's flash memory.
As for your 360 on PC, you either need a YbPrBr input on your monitor (uncommon), get the new Elite 360 which has HDMI out, or do what I do and get the VGA cable for 360. It outputs in vga, and has a seperate optical out so that you can hook up your surround sound instead of your monitor's speakers. It works great, and the picture is slightly better than Component, and it can output 1080p (in games that support it).
The versatality of the 360 is what amazes me, and because most of all of that is centered around gaming, instead of unneeded multimedia, I have enjoyed it more than any previous console.
I'm sure there's more than just alan wake to enjoy on 360, Fable 2, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 are just a few games that you'll miss out on as a 360 owner. Well, PC owners will most likely get 2 of those games, only years later.

Do you mean PS3 owner?

I run my 360 on my PC monitor ( a Dell 2407FWP @1080p ) using the VGA Cable and it looks absolutely immense! Before that I was using a smaller 17" LCD screen @1280x1024 which still looked good and the 360 did a pretty decent job at scaling the image and the 360 can do most resolutions (except a 16:10 ratio :( ). If your using a wide aspect monitor then I'd definitely recommend it, but if not it still gives some very impressive visuals for the money, and is probably the cheapest way of expriencing Bioshock in (almost) all its glory!

Cheers dude it's good to know— I'm thinking more along the lines of Alan Wake. I want to use a wheel with it, so I need to set it up on my desk.

I mean those are other games to justify a purchase of a 360, even though they may be ported to PC at a later time.
I realize what I said now >_< I meant "you'll miss out on as not being a 360 owner"

Rumors of Dead Rising 2 being worked on is great as well. If they fix the minor bugs/annoying aspects of the game, and have more outdoor locations, it could be an AAA title.

I'm yet to play it. I'm mainly a retro-gamer since it means I can afford to play everything I want ;)
