View Full Version : A few ways how Empire Bay could be more realistic

I don't know if this is possible but it'd be a really neat feature to include in Mafia II, and would make the city even more realistic...
I was thinking out of all the GTA games I've played, and other free-roam crime games I've never seen firefighters fighting fire...
I was thinking maybe you guys could make randomley generated fires in various buildings, and allow the npc firemen go and take out the fire. I think that would make the game very realistic and make the city more alive! Consider it...would you kindly?:D

I love the idea, each detail which makes the game more realistic is another reason why mafia II will be the best game ever made!

wouldn't be bad if added, and I must say this would make for a very realistic city.
but not really needed though... :(
I must say it could make a viable addition to Mafia 3. Who knows...

Does anyone still thinks of Mafia 2 as an gta-type open world???Jeez...
We could be witness of the fire, like it was with the suicide guy on the bridge in first game, that`s all, folks.
Edit: oh, I didn`t notice it was Mark Meltzer, granting this circumstance, I`m not suprised.

Yeah.
And even if they don't in which I don't think they do I'm sure "Empire Bay" is and will be just fine as they are making it out to be! ;)

Would be fun to see those firefighters in action, but the city doesn't really need it.
In real life I also allmost never see them fight a fire tbh.
It's not that there are constantly houses catching fire...
They might do some scripted firefights (after you put it on fire  )

you did get fire fighters in san adreas but they stayed in their truck and shot water
But there weren't random fires in S.A. at least as far as I know they were either scripted or you lit them.

Im not 100% but i think if other cars somehow caught on fire the fire department would be there.

They could have a number of rare events. There are things you see in other games where there are things that happen less often, but it's same exact event and it's pretty common.
For example, you could see people moving furniture into a house maybe once during your entire time playing or a house fire once or a car on the side of the road that is just smoking (after a car fire) or a small crime once/twice or a roofer repairing the roof of a house or someone being wheeled out of house and into an ambulance after a heart attack or someone picking up fallen tree branches after a windy/rainy day or a neighbor with a pet on a leash or a neighbor saying 'hello' to you.
These are small things that you could see in real life, but not something you see everyday. There should be some randomness to it and some things should be more rare than others. For example, I see/hear fire trucks with sirens on MUCH more than I see an actual fire. You know what I mean?

i would like gangsters fighting with police without your interaction like you know, you`re driving your car around the city and suddenly there is shootout right in front of you. and you`re not part of it. some other family or something and not scripted.

It would also be tight to see random car crashes ave the police close off that street. This is create obstucles that can appear during car crashes or something. They could also close off roads to things like repairing of the road or something.

This is something I like more :)
In the real world, this is also alot more common and I'm allways cursing when I encounter another street maintenance
It's like they allways do it on purpose to annoy me!
When did they make the switch from Empire City, to Empire Bay?

Road repairs are cool, but imagine how many times per day you see burning houses and crash investigating cops on the street?

I was missing kids on the street from Mafia 1. I remember there was 1-2 kid in in the intro, and in one mission but that was all.
I'd like to see kids in Mafia 2. Putting homeless people gathering together in nighttime would be cool as well.
In GTA IV, people were doing yoga in the parks, which also kinda cool. But in the 50's the yoga wasn't that popular.

Things like a house on fire, maybe you see once. See fire trucks going past you on the road? Maybe 2 or 3 times the entire game. Some other things more often....like people mowing their lawn (with manual grasscutter...I don't know if electric or gas-powered mowers were available back then).

It would be cool to include newspaper selling kids, who are yelling.
After you made havoc in a previous mission they could yell "Big massacre, 20 people died, suspect unknown, just 10 cent! Here's your Empire Telegraph"

Traffic congestions would be realistic, to stay on topic. It might be a good idea that IF you have a high-end machine you can pump up the traffic volume to the max.
I mean, for those, who have played Mafia 1, we all seen the intro with a lot of cars, very realistic, yet in the game there were only a few cars on road at the time.
Apart from the computing power, there are other limitations as well. If the AI drives not intelligent enough, there's no point putting big traffic into the game, it will not look realistic, since AI drives cannot handle it correctly, they would behave stupidly.

Yeah, traffic is rather a must. But, no traffic jams. I don't want to sit on the couch shouting, "What the ****!? I paid $60 for this!?" Then I'll get mad, whip out some grenades, and clear a path, earning the attention of everyone in a ten-block radius. Massive gunfight ensues. <3 massive gunfights, btw.

The problem is that if you randomly generate fires in open gameplay, even if they're extremely rare, you'll more than likely come across it once too often and the effect will be ruined. In all my time that I've lived where I do, I've seen one fire, and that was several miles away in the distance. I've heard about other fires, but the point is that this sort of detail would be far better used as a scripted event.
You remember the mission 'Fairplay' in the original Mafia? That had a small scripted event of a man who was evidently attempting to commit suicide, with a small huddle of people around him trying to get him to come down. It was small, poignant and it worked. If it was a randomly generated event, that effect and atmosphere would most likely be ruined, not to mention the liklihood of it happening more than once. 2K Games have make it clear that they're going with the more cinematic option of controlling weather and other events in order to control the atmosphere and mood.

I'm not sure about this cos i have no experience with this type of thing, but surely they can run scripts that will only run once. I suppose it'd be quite alot of effort just for the once time.
