I've noticed 2k has a few games on the steam network.
quick question; will Bioshock be added to the steam catalogue at some point in time?

i dont think so, with a game (assuming) big it'd probaly just be to big to download.

and if you want it on computer just get it from store lazy:)

lol well half the games on steam are bigger than 5 gig silly.
also, you notice that with HL2, you can buy from the store, and then install the game into steam from the CD, and then update?
silly...

EDIT: and large games don't concern me because i have ADSL 2+, silly!..

I think it would be a win-win situation. Though I have never downloaded a game through Steam because I want to have the box and dvd in my hands. I need the smell of freshly printed paper filling my room, aaah... mmm, it's so goood :p Deeeper, deeeper in my lungs the sweet aroma.

So, don't count on me on cheating myself out of this pleasure !

Downloaded H2: Episode 1 as well as Sin emergence: episode 1 off of Steam. Worked alright but I like to have the game disk in mah handz.

i just got my HL2 2006 holiday pack through steam, and i really dont care in that instance whether i have a dvd in my hands, because i got such a great bargain (almost 50% off, if bought separately through steam, and at least 75% off buying retail)

don't worry though, in the case of bioshock i would much prefer to hold a CE in my hands, and i cant wait to massage my fingers with the nobby bits of the big daddy figurine.. XD

The official position is that 2K haven't decided yet, basically.

If I don't get the Collectors Edition box set, then I would definitely buy through Steam. The ideal solution would allow us to buy a retail copy and register it on Steam. I was actually going to put a poll up a while back to gauge interest, and maybe aid 2K in their decision.

Although there appears to be much sentimental feeling towards the traditional box/disc format. Personally I believe if digital distribution means getting more money through to the developers (where it should be), then I'm all for it. That being said I don't know what that would mean for Irrational now that 2K has acquired the studio.

well, the two benefits of digitally distributed media are (which you and i have mentioned one each)
1) more money to the producers, because there is no cost associated with "the middle man" (apart from a small steam fee or percentage of each sale maybe).
2) lower cost to the consumer, because there is no cost associated with "the middle man".

about your idea of tying a cdkey to a steam account (if you buy a box set), i was thinking that as well.

go on.. host a poll. :D

I use steam alot for my games... But I'd still buy a copy from EBGames, Since I'd want my case and all that pretty stuff if there is a Limited Edition.

If the game is on steam, it will be exposed to the vast amount of HL2/CS players. That's an extra million or so in sales. :)

borgdrone89
04-16-2007, 01:44 AM
actually, that's a VERY valid point. they should release it in stores (so we can get our CEs and things), and they should release it on steam for publicity and that million or so of potential buyers.

I hope Bioshock will be on the DVD(s?) from the box you'll buy in the store. Sure, Bioshock could be made available to purchase from steam as well (What do I care when I'm to buy the LE?), but please, for the love of ...ehm .. something ... do NOT make the same mistake Valve did by allowing Half-Life 2 to be available through download-only. Games ought to be included in their entirety on the discs you purchase, and not exclusively through download (Especially so considering steam is terribly constraining and user-hostile)

Sincerely

Always takes a long time for a game to appear on steam after it's release. Notice how they like just put The Longest Journey on there and such? They don't immediately release games onto Steam (thankfully, their servers would crash), but I don't see why we wouldn't expect it on there maybe a year after Bx's release.

Yes and no. Puslishers are wary of Steam, but that's starting to change. Eidos has jumped on it, releasing Tomb Raider Anniversary simultaneously in it and through retail (or close enough to it).

It's also good for Long Tail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Tail) games; Storage and bandwidth is cheaper than boxes, disks, and shipping, which means companies can still make money off titles that wouldn't be profitable enough to fill the shelves at EB. It makes sense for games like TLJ to come out on Steam later once they fall into the tail, that way they can maximize revenue. For smaller, indie titles like The Ship and Red Orchestra, Steam has made them popular enough to rise out of the Long Tail and find a retail release.

In one the many things I've read/heard about Bioshock Steam was mentioned, but the answer was basically we're not ruling it out but we're not looking at Steam for the moment. So, at some point I think we'll see Bioshock on steam, but as FTW said it'll be a while.

If 2K decides to put Bx there from the get-go, that's when it'll be available. And I'd love to have it on Steam. One thing I really dig is that when I want to play a Steam game - like HL2 - I don't have to hunt for that blasted CD/DVD (many of which are still in storage in the basement since we moved), but simply click an icon and I'm in business.

I agree - I may get a Steam copy at some point, but I want a retail copy with all of the cool furnishings provided with a great game like this that has Limited/Collectors Editions. For any random game, it's just the game itself I care about.

But when it's Bioshock, I want the whole shebang.

I thought I'd get a poll going to show how much support there is for an August 21 release of Bioshock on Steam. I used a 3rd party poll site so I could link multiple sites to it.

It'd be cool if they have it on Steam, but you can't get a Limited Edition with Big Daddy figurine though

It could be sooner then that as 2K games already has several games on steam. So much of the framework is already there for the games to be put on steam.

Yeah, if their behavior in the past is any indicator, they'll put it on Steam after a period of time (like they did with Prey).

Damien_Azreal
08-05-2007, 11:40 PM
Well, PREY was put on STEAM out of need... not because they wanted to.

PREY was originally released on the online distributer Triton, but they went backrupt and died. So all those peopel who bought the game through Triton couldn't play it.
That is why PREY appeared on STEAM and is also the reason why retail CD-keys work with PREY on STEAM. It was a smart way of making the game playable to those who had purchased it through Triton.

I've never had a problem with steam. I downloaded it before HL2 came out so I could play Codename:Gordon and play the demo when it came out. I've never experienced a glitch. I continue to use Steam without any problems. What were the problems people were experiencing out of curiosity?

I've posted the poll at several other sites. Hopefully someone will take notice. I happen to love Steam and could care less about having the CD and such. I know it will likely come to Steam eventually, but I would rather buy it on Steam on August 21st! The figurine would be cool though, but I already bought the Bioshock loves Threadless Tee so I have my Bioshock thing... Thanks for voting people!

Personally I hate discs enough, and steam games are usually cheaper and that much more convenient that I'm going to put off buying this game and wait for a steam release.

Also, what about lost planet, which in Australia at least was available on steam a good week BEFORE it was released in retail.

Seamonkey

most of the games I get come off of steam.

Bioshock will probably be on there within a month or two of release.

Here in Israel Bioshock will be launch 14 days after the original launch.
to me it sound like FOREVER
So if Steam will come with early download i will be the first to do so.

I really don't think you'll be able to download an 8GB game from anywhere. Then again, D2D will probably do it, so Steam might as well too.

Well Medieval 2: Total War is on Steam and is around 11 GB so Bioshock being on steam wont be that big of a deal in terms of the game size.

Valve just announced that players can preload Bioshock, and as these things usually go, begin playing on the 21st when it is officially released.

But this seems to be uploading the manual in someones personal site

Bioshock coming to Steam on the 21st... well I can't help but think my crappy little poll swayed them! This is the best news I've gotten all day! Actually it's somewhat of a mixed blessing because I was going to wait to buy it on Steam when it was "eventually" released as we all thought it would be. That meant I wouldn't have to upgrade my video card right away (I was going to wait until Crysis). I'm definitely pre-ordering when I get home from work tomarrow morning, and it looks like I'll be ordering a new video card as well! :D
