"Getting overly excited about a new game's release is forgivable. Putting your heart into overblown hype, and being upset when the game isn't what you thought it was meant to be, is not. Stay on the level, and out of the hype..."
Ok, but seriously. I think that a thread that deals directly with hype is needed. Some of you guys have been following Bioshock since hype started surrounding the first game, and so you know what to expect this time around. We need to understand that everyone is excited, INCLUDING the people who have the privilege of having and passing on the information. We cannot take people's predictions to heart, and we can't even take quotes from the developers to heart. Because at the end of the day, what the game will be is what happens when you pop that disc into your respective platform, and play it. These guesses as to what it'll be will never amount to more than what it actually is... unless you let it go to your head and end up returning the game because you're angry and it wasn't what fit your specific wants.
So, hype is fun. These theories we're creating are REALLY fun. But don't get upset when half or even less of these theories come true, and try to play the game as if you HAVEN'T been glued to 2K forums for the past six months, greedily consuming any information on Bioshock 2 whether its official or not.

AspiR's right. Have fun speculating, but don't take it too seriously - you're not writing the game yourself.
We all want it to be fun, and more likely than not, we'll all like it. The people making the game know what they're doing. Let's trust that.

I don't pay attention to hype, I just play the game and review it based on what I expect from something with the technology available and the project schedules they have in place to finish it. Read Game Developer, great magazine that analyzes game production projects.

haha nice take on the Rapture announcements AspiR, and yeah agreeing with you guys (but Maelias mostly) I dont agree or pay attention to with hype I only buy a game on whether the prequel was amazing (Bioshock was so yeah), and if it looks good (gameplay, and other factors).

Yeah, I agree.
I like hearing other peoples theories even though they may not be true or not. I just hope that it lives up to the kind of hype that it deserves and that it doesn't become something that we wouldn't really want it to be.

OM NOM NOM!
On a more serious note, I may be getting hyped, but I don't expect the unachievable in games, my hype is just for exploring the later version of rapture and seeing new zones and even new splicer designs :D
Greedily consuming? Thats a little harsh, I would go with Selfishly Devouring, but....
It doesnt matter to me whether the game is good or not, I'll buy it do to being such a huge Bioshock fan.:D But I know it will be pretty good, its just a fealling.:D

I made the mistake of getting massively hyped for a game once. It utterly shattered the game for me. It was still fairly fun, and it wasn't that great anyway, but the fact that I was looking forward to it so much until the end really prevented me from enjoying it enough.
Those that know me well, will know that I'm talking about Splinter Cell: Double Agent. I've ranted about it many a time, and always bring it up when talking about getting over-hyped.
I shouldn't go into the details about it, so I won't.
But I've learnt my lesson. With Bioshock 2, I'm constantly aware that I hardly know a thing about it, and thus I'm not hyped, nor do I assume it's going to be bad. If it turns out to be as amazing as the first game, then I'll end up getting pretty hyped when I start seeing more. But even then, I'll consider that I've only seen fragments of the full game.
I'd advise everyone else do the same.

The sequels are never as good as the originals.

Half-Life 2. Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. Just to name a couple.

God of War II, Red Alert 2, Dawn of War II just to stay in the realms of the 2s.

Someone could probably post a "which sequels are better than the originals" thread, and then these replies would be on topic... in that thread.
<.< just saying.

Yeah, I only posted 2 of them since I didn't want to detract from the original topic too much.

With that attitude why are you in the forums discussing a sequel? I don't know I'm excited, but I'm not hyped yet. Like Pineapples said when I start seeing a bunch of info and gameplay THEN I can decide to be hyped or not. Some thoeries are ok, some are ludicrous, and I really dont take any of them to heart because we aren't the devs. (Unless someone here is as dev posing as a cult member   ) I'm only excited and will continue to be excited though. Hyped soon hopefully.

Good point. I am always skeptical about a sequel, especially if the original was fine just as it is. Kinda like the movie Crank. Anyone that watched that movie would tell you that it had a beginning, middle, and end, and was fine just as it was. Now they are coming out with a Crank 2 that looks very questionable from the previews and is out this week I believe.
Anyways, the point I am trying to make is that until they come out with previews or gameplay footage, I dont judge it or get hyped, I am simply indifferent about it. Now that I have seen the Bioshock 2 gameplay, I'm pumped. I wish I could say the same for Crank 2...
