Now we've all known for some time that a man named Atlas has a big part to play in BioShock but not much has been said about who he actually is or what his relation to Andrew Ryan is.
People have said that he was the man on the opposing side of the civil war that took place in Rapture against Andrew Ryan but that person is Tenebaum not Atlas.
Today I was looking at the Wikipedia article about the book "Atlas Shrugged" when I came across the following information about BioShock:
"In the currently-in-development computer game Bioshock the words are daubed on a surface. An issue of PC Gamer magazine also cites Atlas Shrugged as a source for the game's setting of a Utopian society undergoing complete collapse, showing that when those at the top become persecuted, societal collapse is sure to follow. One of the main characters in the game is a fisherman called Atlas, who maintains contact with the player thought the game via radio. Throughout the game, there are graffitied walls with the words "Atlas was right", hinting there is more to him than meets the eye."
This is the only place I've heard about Atlas being a fisherman but I knew about the "Atlas was right" graffiti from in game pictures.
Another major plot point is in the demo.
When you listen to the first audio diary made by the woman spending New Year's Eve alone, near the end of the recording you hear what sounds like a mob of people attacking the restaraunt while shouting "Long live Atlas!"
So the question of who is Atlas remains.
Any thoughts or ideas?

did you look up the mythological figure, the whole holding the world on his shoulders thing is why Atlas chose that pseudonym. I assume it is a pseudonym
I dont know there the thing about him being a fisherman came from, that would be the first I heard about it. I think who ever wrote that took a few liberties
He has a family he is trying and he is trying to get them out of rapture

Atlas doesn't hold up the world, he holds up the sky.
And yes we all know he claims to have a family that he wants you to rescue and that's the reason he's helping you.
I can't confirm or deny if he's a fisherman since I haven't seen or heard it anywhere else.

Hello all,
Maybe Atlas is some kind of savior of Rapture who failed to save the inhabitants of the underwater city. Since I haven't played the demo because I don't have a Xbox 360, I can't really say something about the "Long live Atlas!" MannyManatee said about.
Atlas could have been a simple fisherman that dedicated his life to help and save the people trapped in Rapture. Could'nt it be that

Atlas is Ryan. Ryan has multiple personalities. Besides the god Atlas he is also a the first king of Atlantis in greece mythology and he has a twin. So Atlas is the first king of Rapture(Ryan) and he has a twin (other personality). One of my crazy guesses. There's like 0.0000000000000000000000001% chance I am right.

Or maybe as the the first king of Atlantis Atlas was the one who came up with the idea of Rapture in the first place. Maybe it wasn't Ryan who decided to build Rapture.

wellthere was a smuggling ring operating out of the fisheries, it has been my belief that there were smuggling people out of rapture and other things in he may have been related to that, that would add to the moral complexity of the game if you ask me, who wants to help out a gangster

I wouldn't be suprised if he was part of A "resistance", dedicated to helping the Citizens of Rapture escape. I also think that Atlas is a more repsected member the group of people hiding from the splicers and gene mods etc. in an underground railroad sort of fashion. None of which are new theories.
I didn't read the above posts, and just skimmed through a bit. But Atlas was one of Andrew Ryans close advisors, he was against Genetic Modifications. The 'ATLAS WAS RIGHT' Thing comes from how Atlas said that Plasmids and ADAM would be the fall of Rapture... and he was right.
Fontaine was the Fisherman by the way, not Atlas. Of course he could be a fisherman too, it just makes more sense to me that the wiki article was just someone mixed something up.

Yeah I don't base eveything on what I read on Wikipedia since any jackass can right anything.
I didn't know about Atlas being an advisor or the smuggling ring in Rapture.
This game is going to be awesome!

You would think if they were smuggling things in the they may have smuggled some plasmids out... would fetch a high price.
Atlas's voice is sooooooo familiar I know who it is but I can't put a name to it!...Not exactly in-game like the rest of you but the title says 'Who is Atlas?'

This could be a dumb question, but is atlas contacting you from within Rapture?
The demo failed to shed any light on his where abouts

I think Atlas was originally in line with Ryan's plan but slowly he decided he was in over his head. he saw the corruption and the dangers of genetic mutation and he decided to begin helping people escape. he, for some reason, had to leave himself (had to escape Ryan?) and his "family" is actually the people of Rapture, who he wants you to save
idk...i'm only guessing, but it sounds reasonable
