First of all— you don't have to read every post in this thread. All it's here for is to let you post random comments whenever you feel like it, just for the fun of it.
It's a little like a forum community game where you just post any random comment you like just becauuse it's fun.
There aren't really any rules beyond those that you agreed to when you registered with the forum.
You can post any random comment you want to and it can be as long or as short as you like.
Okay— so I'll start the ball rolling...

I must also remember to kick Mr. Gimble outta my god-damned Flat and go to bed. The Internet is not a productive place to be at...... 1:45am in the mother-loving morning.
Aside from that, I must also remember to..... awww I dunno. Drink more? Drink less? Do the washing-up? Send off my police-summons for having a head-light out? Buy a belated Mother's-Day card? Pay my council tax? Appreciate my Girlfriend? Finish Gears of War? Examine the potential for a BBQ over Easter?
Who knows.
Anyway, Mr. Gimble is now asleep on my sofa.

I'd like to take a moment to document the second cancer tumor in this somewhat newly established forum. It's such a perfect metaphor (and this is the perfectly themeless yet ironically germane topic to post it in) that I couldn't resist. In case you missed the previous description of this metaphor, here's the scoop. Cancer cells are like other cells, but they reproduce uncontrollably, which leads to other problems and, if not controlled, death. They are still cells of the same type as the 'host' cells (as opposed to, say, foreign bodies that may themselves cause illness or lead to cancer, which in this metaphor would be spam or even worse, actual malicious code which we fortunatly haven't seen yet). Themeless, post-count-based topics are the equivalent to cancer in an online forum. They reproduce uncontrollably by their very nature, are the same type of topics as any other, and, if not controlled, may cause server issues. I'm thinking of another online forum where the post count was in the tens of thousands and it actually took the forum offline. In fact, the causes of cancer may even be done in the course of 'normal' daily routines without necessarily knowing it. For example, as I post in this topic, I'm helping foster the new tumor here. It's fun to explore this metaphor and it takes my mind off work now that I'm home. Now I don't smoke myself, but smoking, I believe, would be a similar activity with similar results. Moderators are the immune system - they have the ability to prune posts and generally maintain the health of the forum. Signatures are pure bloat - they make the forum 'fat' and, unfortunately, this metaphor is too blunt to be fun to elaborate on. Did I ever say thanks, by the way, for not allowing signatures on this forum? Anyway, here's to everyone's health. Cheers!
the "what are you listening to right now?" thread would be the first cancerous thread, I believe anyway.
I'm currently toy'ing with the idea of hosting a drunken halo2 lan night this saturday night, I'd very much like to do so as I haven't had a good one (with more than 6 people) in quite some time. Only problem is that saturday night is the night after tomorrow so organizing it on such short notice would be an act of god. I know there's enough people who would be interested but I'm not entirely sure the time frame would allow it to go smoothly, so I'm also toy'ing with the idea of postponing it for a week in order to garner a larger of audience. I don't really like to get these things going unless there's 10 - 15 people involved.
So how bout it everyone? I'm willing to put you all up in my basement, but you'll have to provide your own airfare. It won't be that hard to get here from the air-port as I'm not all that far outside of Toronto, where you would most likely be flying in to. C'mon! International flight for a night or two of drunken halo fun, I'll even let you drink my booze.

Oddly enough, the first 45 minutes of my working morning today were fraught with similar perils when AutoCAD kindly informed me that it had experienced an "exception" of some nature, and that it must now "forget everything I had told it to do all god-damn morning".

And as for Mr Gimble... well... I don't even know how he's still alive. He sounds as if he's on the very cusp of cardiac arrest. The symptoms seem to continue on a by-regular, 5-minute-ish cycle. I can only imagine the death-like horrors I may wake up to find in my otherwise boring living-room...

Congratulations to me, I procrastinated another entire day away! Gotta tell you I'm not a lazy guy but unemployment turns me into a sluggish being with an indescribable talent of doing nothing. It's actually frustrating, I make plans to do something and then sleep through the morning, wake up around noon or 1 in the afternoon and greet my concious self with thoughts of "Ok, I'll be out of the shower and ready by 2, out of the door by 2:30" ... 4pm rolls around and I finally concede the day's inability to function. Even worse this always seems to happen during the worst possible of times, i.e. when I can't reschedule for the next day due to it being good friday, nor can I really reschedule for the following monday as it's still considered easter and several of the places on my list of needed visitation will surely be closed.
Aggrivating as it all is, worse is my patience wearing terribly thin waiting to purchase a new television, the 30" SD monstrosity residing in my room right now stares at me everytime I enter with a look of such malcontempt I feel it almost necessary to grab my platinum xbox and smash the two figures of yester-year so thoroughly together I can finally rid myself of them both. The prospect of twiddling my thumbs for countless hours a day as I procrastinate further is less appealing though, so for now I have to deal with that abortion of technology leering at me with it's fuzzy, washed out picture of death and dream of the day I can deconstruct the monstrous entertainment center housing it in favor of floating shelving units which will oh so beautifully display the 26" flat panel LCD I'm pining for.
The only 2 things that could possibly raise my spirits this week-end are mostly out of my control, the first being my halo night going off without a hitch. The second happens to coincide with halo night, even conflict slightly. My Leafs (NHL hockey for those not in the know) face the Canadians in history's greatest sports rivalry reborn as both teams fight desperately for their play-off lives. If My leaf's fail to make the play-offs I will be undoubtedly depressed until their General Manager, John Ferguson Jr. is fired for his lack of ability to "field" a play-off worthy team. This will lift my spirits greatly as I've been waiting for his forced resignation since the day he was named to his position... god I hate that man.
that's enough rambling for now I think.
edit: I think that's the best I can do for you, it was written in a pretty expansive way so the paragraphs are a bit fat... I've seen way worse on here though :p

Original Scottish brogue:
Today I was over at the Chinese embassy on Broadway, picking up a tourist visa required to visit China, and lo and behold the choob security guard is still there rolling his eyes at anybody asking him a logical question. I guess he thinks everyone on Earth has experience arranging trips to China, aka the Zone
There we are, my twanger and me, waiting in line to get our passports back, and the numptie comes up to me and says no drinking in here. Well **** that guy!, perfectly good Irish coffee down the garbage hole cuz obviously we're all kiddies who spill their drinks. I wanted to give him a nice view of my herry pie right then, but I didn't want to cause a stooshie. I didn't want to waste a perfectly good brew, so I skelped it down.
Anyways we got our visa's for our trip, and my old cocker has to shout out "We're going to Disneyland!" right in front of the Falun Gong protesters :o
Poor Falun Gongers :(
Galactic common translation:
Translation:
Today I was physically located at the Chinese embassy on a street within the city I inhabit, acquiring a tourist visitation permit required to visit a nation named after porcelain meal plates, and there was an incredibly slow-witted security guard making circular motions with the multicolored globes between his nose at any person under 7 feet tall asking him a normal question. I surmised that he believes everyone inhabiting Sol III has previously visited porcelain meal plate country, aka the name of the setting in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
My life partner and I are standing in a vertical, then horizontal formation of homo sapiens, and then the socially challenged security guard opens his small air passageway located in the middle of his face, vocalizing to me that I cannot consume beverages of any nature within the premises. Well 'expletive deleted' that entity, perfectly good leprechaun-resembling caffeineited beverage will need to be placed within a sanitation bin, because male with badge & small representation of manhood thinks us earthlings are all prepubescents who expunge their liquid containers upon the surface where gravity sends all forms of matter. I daydreamed of an event where I displayed my female unmentionables, but I didn't want to create an international incident. I didn't want to forsake a perfectly good concoction of liquid heaven, so I readily consumed it.
Continuing on, we acquired our permits for our sojourn into the land of a billion shorter-than-average humans, and my significant other spoke at a high volume "We're going to Disneyland!" right in front of the Falun Gong injustice representatives.
I permitted a sympathetic thought to the Falun Gong activists.

So I'm playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. this evening and I've accumulated six Pellicle artifacts, that are a no-penalty protection against chemical burns. I think the only place to get a chemical burn in the game is the Fruit Punch anomalies, which are super-easy to avoid, which got me thinking - how well do these protect against the burn anyway? Each is a +30 and you can equip five, so into the acid bath I go to see what happens. Not only was I safe, but it fixed my armor! I had an old suit on and the blue quality meter begin going up! So a few trips back to the stash and all my armor is like new. Even the Exoskeleton that cost a fortune and I had whittled down to almost nothing was brought back to completely new. Bug? Secret? Five of the electric Batteries (not to be confused with the burn Batteries) also let you walk with impunity through the electro anomalies. Awesome way to lead critters after you to their untimely demise.

just out of interest, could you print a shortened walkthrough of stalker in your own words?
im still waiting for paypal to get my money in...still doomed to play ravenholm in hl2Shortened S.T.A.L.K.E.R. walkthrough coming up. The spoiler tags from the other post didn't work for me? [ color=#9d9d9d]Test[ /color] Anyway, the following is mostly a guide, no storyline spoilers follow so read at your own risk.
These are primarily things that should have been explained better in the manual and/or I wish I had known when I first started. Dead things (people and critters) are searchable. If you search the dead body of a mutant, you might find a body part (a weird looking icon in the top left corner of the grid that comes up when you search that's actually a body part) - grab it and hang onto it. Don't sell it right away because some of the side missions (with better rewards than the cash value of the part) will be requests for these parts. The tail of the pseudodog is hard to see, so look closely if you kill one and examine the body, for example. If you search the dead bodies of other Stalkers, sometimes you'll hear a beep - that means your PDA has been updated with information about a secret stash. There's some text that's usually useless about what you learned that appears briefly at the bottom right of the screen. Whenever you hear this beep, a purple circle with three triangles inside appears somewhere (might be off screen) on your map. This location will usually have goodies for you to take (some of them are empty for whatever reason). Some of these locations will disappear when you've looted them and may reappear if another clue for that same location comes up (it'll magically be repopulated with stuff). Some of these locations will not disappear after you loot them, and you just have to keep checking back. Some of these stashes do not look like something you'd expect initially (a bolted pipe joint, a gas mask, etc.) so you'll have to sniff around with your cross hairs when you're on target until your hud displays 'search the stash'. Some dead Stalker bodies remain for quite some time - check them for stuff every time you return to that map because they'll continue giving you clues to hidden stashes after a period of time. Bodies also contain lots of ammo and often weapons, to the point where if you're not wasteful, you won't have to buy any (although there's better ammo/weapons available at the shops). Some missions have a time limit. At first it was hard to tell because all your tasks have a time stamp on them, but you can tell because the ones with a time limit will have a 'time remaining' field below the timestamp that changes with time. Completing one of these missions automatically starts a second mission "Return for the reward" which also has a time limit so it may be worth pacing yourself so you don't wind up in a time pinch. If you don't pick up the reward for completing the task, it'll show up as a failed task. When you pick things up, you'll see your weight around the left hand side of your inventory changes. You can carry a limited amount of weight and if you're on a resource-gathering mission, extra stuff can add up to the point where you can't move (you'll see the weight meter turn red, after which you have about 10 more kg before you can't move). Don't get stuck like that where you can fall under fire. The binoculars will identify enemies/friends that you can't normally see, so don't stop using them once you get a scope or weapon. If you know there are some bad guys somewhere, bust out the binoculars and look around. It'll put a colored reticle (depending on if you have this option enabled in the settings) wherever a person/critter is, so you can plan your attack. On your little hud/map at the top left corner, you'll see dots. Gray ones are dead Stalkers (zombies, dead or alive, don't show up but will have stash clues), yellow are neutral, red, enemies, and green are your bros. If an enemy is detecting you, you'll see their red dot become a bit larger, so heads up. In rare occasions, approaching a red enemy with your weapon lowered will cause them not to attack you and you can make a decision to take a freindly approach or otherwise, but this is rare (usually, they'll shoot on site, but it may be worth a try). When you start collecting artifacts, keep them if you don't need the money right away. These will often be requested on side missions, and if you already have the one their after, you can start and complete the mission on the spot. I won't get into which artifacts are better or worse, but hold onto what you can at the beginning so you can get a feel for which ones are considered valuable, which ones are asked for most for side missions, and which ones should be used for yourself. To use one (I didn't figure this out until halfway through the game), double click on it once it's in your inventory (not when you're searching a cadaver, or you'll move it there) and it'll move to the top right of your screen where it'll be 'active'. The stats for the artifact will now act on your person (your endurance may increase but your sensitivity to electric shock may also increase, for example). In your PDA, look at your list of tasks. If you double click the dot to the right of the task, you'll make the red compass icon show up next to it that'll make the arrow on your HUD map point in the direction of the goal of that task. This way you can make the arrow point you in the direction of the task goal you want. The goals of the tasks will look like green targets on the map unless you're at a different elevation, in which case they'll look like a white T (kind of). That way you know you're headed in the right direction but need to go up or down (doesn't say which I don't think) to actually arrive at the spot. Head shots work well in this game - I didn't believe how much of a difference it'd make until I began playing, but see for yourself. There are a lot of things to maintain and control so I'd recommend getting used to doing this (like the different firing modes on your weapon - don't wait until you're in a pitched battle to find out you have it on one-shot or that it's got four modes instead of two so you can't find the mode you want quick, for example). The HUD at the lower left of the screen is explained fairly well in the manual. The firefights in this game are a LOT of fun when you're fluent with your system/weapons/artifacts/ammo types.

It had a two-pronged meaning to it:
First, splicer mentioned he had a day of being told what he can and can't talk about. Hence "You do not talk about Fight Club"
Second, splicer & many other clear-minded men always find themselves in a fight for their right to just exist peacefully in today's fast-paced, overwrought societies. Fight Club could be the answer he's looking for.
This has been a paid advertisement by the coalition to explain Raveness's eccentric ribbings

Jeezus Christ, Hatesink don't frighten us like that again! This place needs the glue that holds together the foundation.
On another note, the Virginia shooting was sickening to hear about, but I couldn't say I was surprised. When my husband told me what happened, I at first didn't hear him and said "where in Canada?". He corrected me, and honestly all I could say was "oh". The gun culture and it's negative fallouts have become ingrained in America's perception.

It's everywhere, there are just so many guns in America it's hundreds of times more likely that a person in that state of mind might have one at any given moment. But I know what you mean about it becoming enured to it. At times it can almost feel like it's just something else to add to the list. :(
The older I get the more it seems to bother me however, so I guess it balances itself out.
It's weird, when it happened this time it seemed more serious because for some reason I was worried about the guys at 2K. How weird is that.

The only way a videogame could make you into something like that is if someone beat you around the head with it every day.
There's always the argument that there are those susceptible few who might be in some way influenced or somehow 'triggered', but banning videogames would be like banning movies. Plus, it wouldn't stop it.

My Condolences :(
Some people are more perceptible to suggestion and have a harder time separating fantasy from reality (especially children- which is why we have ratings on games, movies, and music). These people are the ones who are at higher risk of acting out what they see. As they get older they'll tend to show anti-social, sociopathic, or schizophrenic traits. The question that really needs to be asked is, how do we identify and help these people?
As for gun control, the US needs to take a long hard look at itself. While they might have the right to bear arms (who knows, the British might invade again), does any civilian need a fully automatic AK-47 with an extended clip? Also, what does it take to get a gun? To get a Gun license in NZ you need a psych profile, a background check and there's a three day stand down between buying a gun and actually getting it. Full autos are banned, and you need a special endorsement to use Semis.
Hatesink
04-17-2007, 07:24 PM
Until they can separate guns from politics I don't think there's a chance they'll ever be able to even begin enforcing stricter regulations regarding firearms.
E.G. NRA should be politically neutral etc.

Just some food for thought: The shooter used two handguns to commit the atrocities, plus fully automatic guns are illegal in most states.
Also, what does it take to get a gun? To get a Gun license in NZ you need a psych profile, a background check and there's a three day stand down between buying a gun and actually getting it. Full autos are banned, and you need a special endorsement to use Semis.
Same level of bureaucracy here in Canada, but hasn't made a lick of difference when it counts. The guy who shot up a college in Quebec legally owned all his sidearms and rifles. I, on the other hand, went the "other" route to acquire mine for protection purposes.
Gun laws have to coincide with social context: A lot of first-world nations put too many social pressures on people (friends, popularity, spouse, children, work hard & long, climb the ladder, keep yourself fit, be good looking, be smart, be happy all the time, bow to your boss, help others, help yourself, be a good parent, nice car, belongings, network, invest, hobbies, keep up with technology, be funny, be a good Christian) that backlashing is inevitable, and with guns so readily available, legally or not, the opportunity for someone not particularily stable to do something like this increases.
A question for those here: How many of those items I mentioned do you fulfill? (assuming we are all smart and funny ;))
SPDeath
04-17-2007, 07:44 PM
Alot of people, seem to have the idea that banning guns or making them harder to obtain won't make any difference at all. Yes, I know that a hardened criminal or psychopath could still obtain a firearm illegally, but what about all the accidental deaths that are caused by children or adults who are not instructed in the use of firearms, who accidently shoot themselves or someone else.
SPDeath

Let see, I've got friends, not really unpopular , not married, work hard? (Your kidding right, im so lazy I can't be bothered to gain weight :D ), sure I climb ladders... how else would i get to high places :D ,keeping myslef fit... hmm I could stand to work out more, be good looking.... hmm not really easy for me to judge my own looks, I'm fairly smart (otherwise I wouldnt be in college), being happy all the time is probably unhealthy but i'm far from miserable, not a parent, don't have a car, don't own much 'cept for my computer (which I treasure dearly :p ), I'd like to think Im funny (again kinda hard for me to judge myself), not christian.

@SPDeath— your chances of being injured increase the closer you get to a gun. It's just about as simple as that.
Fit, okay looking, bow to everyone (within reason)— (was married to a Japanese girl from a very traditional family for quite a few years), hobbies, born again (it was a whole process (don't believe in a literal translation of the bible & not sure if I share the Christian idea of God (I kind of believe in the spirit))). None of any of the other stuff.

While I agree that square boobs are annoying. How does a culture get so out of touch that games with a FELONY for the title are fine as long as they don't show square boobs?
In my opinion if more kids played with boobs instead of guns these things wouldn't happen. In fact it'd lead to growth of life instead of loss of it. Sadly too many other voters don't agree with me :(
That being said, of course as soon as the shooting happened people were all shocked and everything. Unfortunately at times like this a lot of my fellow countrymen like to forget the risk other students face at school and GO ANYWAYS. Kosovo, Baghdad, Afganistan, Israel/Palestine/Lebanon, Sudan, The Congo, there's more and that's just in the past ten years! When American students are risking mortar fire to learn that's when I'll shed a tear for them and not before.
(I feel like I should apologize - not for this rant, but because my country lately seems to want to invade anything that moves. For what it's worth - sorry.)

I'll be honest with you. When it comes to matters I have control over I'm 'ultra-conservative', even if it means temporarily compromising or abandoning my beliefs.
I'm not going to tell you I'm pro war, because I'm not. War is hell. But if we all put our guns down and dissolved all the armies (so that we had no one to defend us), strange people would come and turn us out of our homes.
Instead of fighting on our doorsteps, we protect boarders. I think there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that 'joe q public' is totally unaware of, things he'd probably find impossible to understand if he were aware of it.
To try and tie this more to topic. I don't think America needs guns any more, I think America's military is perfectly sufficient, so as to effectively eliminate any need for guns in the home (okay, there's target shooting as a sport, but that's different issue).

Bit off the current topic, but has anyone from the UK seen the latest Cillit Bang ad. "Millions of women are at it" . It left me a bit bewildered, "Did he just say that  "

...if you believe that wearing contact lenses as opposed to glasses can give a person 'comfy monthlies' then you've been watching to much advertising. ;)

I don't think America needs guns any moreYou'd leave us high and dry in the case of a zombie attack?
Aside from a zombie attack though I agree. Yes it does say we have a right to bear arms. We needed it then. We were a bunch of whining non-cooperative colonies trying to break away from a large empire. We had many different native groups that wanted to push us back into the ocean (with good reason). We had no national law enforcement.
Except that now we do have national law enforcement, now we are a large empire, now we don't have natives trying to push us back. States do still whine though.:)
So yeah not as many people need guns. But taking guns won't fix violent crimes. It just means other weapons that you can't regulate like knives or pipe bombs or feral raccoons will be used. Maybe the thought of having to use a knife would dissuade those who are less certain (it's easier to kill when you don't have to be personal).
My point before was that a lot of my fellow countrymen like to whine about how things like this are a tragedy, or that they got shot or had to play dead. They like to forget about kids in other countries dodging mortars and civil wars to get an education. They like to forget about our own inner city kids having to deal with violence to get an education. They should stop whining.
(I'm not saying I condone shooting up a school. I'm trying to say that those of us who have gone through school without ever seeing someone get shot or horribly hurt should be a lot more thankful for that fact.)

it's easier to kill when you don't have to be personal.Absolutely— it's easier to take a life with a pike-staff than with a knife, and even easier still with a rifle, etc.
The average person has to be trained to almost 'fool themselves' into taking a life on the battle field, otherwise they literally just pretend to fight.

They like to forget about kids in other countries dodging mortars and civil wars to get an education. They like to forget about our own inner city kids having to deal with violence to get an education. They should stop whining. It can be upsetting, but silence is often not the answer, but rather 'whining' about different things. Those of us who are safe enough to be able to work on helping others create peace maybe should do so.
It reminds me of the quote at the beginning of Illusion Softworks' Mafia:
"Now we that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak and not to please ourselves"
I'm trying to say that those of us who have gone through school without ever seeing someone get shot or horribly hurt should be a lot more thankful for that fact.)I know— I can't imagine what it must be like. I think people in that kind of situation must just be in a kind of denial.

I posted a question to my other usual hangout (been there about 2.5 years) and it's all just totally kicked off. Huge argument. People about to actually be banned. Big time argument.
Edit: The owner of the site has virtually just 'outed' himself. There are friendships being broken. It's out of my hands now.
Probably won't be posting the same question here ;)
Edit:@jackinthebox — I'm editing a lot more now (instead of double-posting) http://ugly.plzdiekthxbye.net/medium/m173.gif

I was going to say "okay but, quid pro quo— you have to let me post it over three posts" :p;)
Okay here it is:
"Do You Believe In Homosexuality?"
"It's just occurred to me that if I'm so turned off by guys that I couldn't imagine wanting to spend intimate time with one, then surely I shouldn't imagine that other guys would choose to do so purely through lack of any better option.
"So it follows that gay people are just gay because they are just gay.
"For a long time I thought they were making do, and it caused me to call my own sexuality into question, basically because I just didn't seem to be able to attract a women.
"So my question, (my suggestion for a topic of discussion), my curiosity is...
Do you believe in homosexuality?"
Edit: It's caused a huge row.
Edit: It's getting an average of one post every 3.75 minutes (approximately)

Do you believe in life after love? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHGmp0pGL5s)
I find usually people who are insecure with their own preference tend to lash out at homosexuality. Honestly, who cares about the sexual preferences of others? It's none of your business, and being intolerant of it always comes off sounding ridiculous and antiquated.

Yes I believe in homosexuality, just as much as I believe in blue skies or green grass. Some people just have an atraction towards men.
I think some of the anti-homosexuality comes from stereotyping, just as much as goths are stereotyped as people who cut themsleves for fun, and young people are stereotyped as drug using thieves by older generations.
