The most recent CD I bought was Chevelle's "Vena Sera." It's amazing. For people who are already fans of the band - it is by far the best album they have written. For those of you who aren't fans, or are skeptical, go buy it. Every song is amazing.
Other music I'm looking forward to this month is Nine Inch Nails' "Year Zero" and "Fear of a Blank Planet" by Porcupine Tree. If you're a fan of progressive rock, metal and ambient, this is the band for you. Think TOOL mixed with Pink Floyd.

I've only got those songs though, from a friend. :(
Take my advice and forget about those songs. There's been a false leak of Minutes to Midnight some time ago. As far as I know there was only one Linkin Park song, QWERTY. The rest were taken from other bands, mostly from Grey Daze where Chester Bennington was a singer so it may lead to believe that this is Linkin Park. So far only one new song is out there - What I've Done.
Here you have confirmed tracklist for MTM:

Grey Daze | Starting to Fly, I have never listened to that band, but I've came by this track and it's really cool.
"Go away, can't you see you're not real!?"
Mech | Painkiller, the song that plays in Credits in The Sims... no, in Painkiller, where else? ;) That band is from my country.
Disturbed | Overburdened from Ten Thousand Fists.
Katatonia | Teargas, Tonight's Music and Don't Tell a Soul from Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Kinda depressing but very moody.
"What is wrong not with the world but me..."
"I live all for this thing that I heard someone sing: when you have no one, no one can hurt you."
A Perfect Circle | Thirteenth Step. It's funny how I start listening to that CD just to hear The Package and end up listening to the whole album.
"I am surrendering to gravity and the unknown."

if i had some stuff that would pump out the bass in a subwoofer, I'd get that.
anyone got good suggestions for metal?
at the moment i'm listening to sing sing sing (jazz)
EDIT: was at my friend's house on sunday, and he has a really decent sound system (all in one that he got for less than half price) and he was showing us the capabilities of the sub. man.. he put an empty iced-coffee carton in front of the sub and it was jiggling all around the place XD
a couple of times his mum opened the door and yelled over the music "MAATT, THE HOUSE IS SHAKING!!!" XD

I like Debussy, but it seems hard to find an orchestra that can stay in tune ;)

*cracks fingers* Metal you say?:D
All That Remains - modern fast metal, has the now common death metal growl + melodic singing
Anthrax - classic thrash metal. whether fronted by Joey or John they still kick ass 20 years later
Arch Enemy - musically very progressive, the vocals are great death metal style growling but are actually done by the attractive Angela Gossow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AngelaGossowWOA2006.jpg)
Armored Saint - John Bush (later Anthrax), is also the vocalist for these guys. good, loud, and fast
Avenged Sevenfold - great progressive riffs, their older stuff has some good growls but apparently M. Shadows (vocalist), just wants to go the pure singing route - he can sing so that's not a problem
Blind Guardian - hands down the best progressive metal out there. imagine Queen fused with old school (pre-Black Album) Metallica and you have these guys
Brand New Sin - really more of a hard rock band with a sort of hick feel to them (one of the guys even has mutton chops), just plain good rock
Bruce Dickinson - vocalist for Iron Maiden, a lot of his solo stuff is really great and Maiden-esque
Children of Bodom - one of the fastest bands out there. almost like a combination of thrash and death metal
Cradle of Filth - fans of metal either love or hate 'em. mainly because Dani (vocalist) goes from deep menacing growls to shrieks so high they can only be heard by canines:)
Demons & Wizards - a side project with members of both Blind Guardian and Iced Earth. Blind Guardian's vocals to Iced Earth's riffs.
Distrubed - just good metal. the lyrics are mostly down to earth yet avoid the common annoyance of dealing with some girl that just broke up with somebody in the band (the song "The Game" being an exception
Dragonforce - another one of the fastest if not the fastest out there. their music is also very melodic and remniscent of Helloween
Dream Theater - probably tied with Blind Guardian for best progressive metal out there. all members are insanely skilled
Fear Factory - great metal to come out during the nu-metal period. Burton (vocalist) was one of the first to use the whole growl to melodic singing constantly throughout songs.
Graveworm - just great death metal. they have an awesome cover of Maiden's "Fear of the Dark" using both violins and bagpipes
Gwar - my fav. band. imagine the lyrical styling of the Dead Kennedys and Agnostic Front set to good solid metal and you have these guys. ive heard they have some sort of stage show too...
Helloween - the pioneers of power metal.
Iced Earth - the current masters of power metal. Jon Scaefer (rhythm guitar and driving force) seems unable to write non-epic pieces of music so most of their albums have one long song at the end divided into usually 3 manageable tracks, except their latest where the song Gettysburg is half an hour long (and ****ing awesome). they also had a great concept album based on Spawn called The Dark Saga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Saga).
In Flames - a great swedish metal band. lyrically similar to korn. musically similar to a guitar to the face.
Iron Maiden - great power metal. since Bruce has rejoined they rock harder than ever
Judas Priest - their latest albums (both with Halford and with Tim Owens) are definitely metal and definitely good. not the most imaginative lyrics, but you usually dont realize that until youve already rocked out to it.
Killwitch Engage similar to Avenged Sevenfold. another great band that can go from growling to singing and back with no problems.
Lordi - just entertaining hard rock. with monster costumes
Megadeth - thrash metal gods. sadly like metallica they also have sold out over the years. unlike metallica they still sound good when performing live.
Metallica - if you don't know who these guys are...
Monster Magnet - not really metal, more hard rock. but if you want music that abounds in self confidence look no further. with lyrics like "the gods told me to relax. they say im gonna be fixed up right", you cant help but be confident.
Mudvayne - originally they sounded like Slipknot clones. these guys have since proved that they've moved on and can do more than just be angsty. they even wrote a song about not being angsty anymore, "Forget to Remember"
Mushroomhead - similar to Slipknot and definitely got overshadowed by them. their music combines industrial with metal and gives a great dark mood to their music. two vocalists is neat too.
Nightwish - good hard metal mixed with...an operatic singer and orchestra. works better than you might think actually.
Pantera - only like a few of their faster songs, but I have to admit they've had a huge influence on the genre
Sevendust - good solid writing, and good solid lyrics. they also put their all into performing live so if you have a chance thats the best way to hear them
Sex Machineguns - thrash metal from Japan. from a country inundated with pop rock that alone makes them unique. but lo and behold they have riffs as good as any american thrash band
Slayer - don't really like them as the lyrics don't seem to have the same cadence as the music, still they are definitely pioneers of metal and deserve a mention
Slipknot - these guys have become popular using everybody else's tricks. while i hate that about them, they have since evolved into a very tight outfit with good music and songs
Soil - not the pinnacle of metal but enjoyable none the less
Strapping Young Lad - the 900lb gorilla of metal that you don't seem coming. Devin Townsend (vocals and guitar) is a jack of all trades when it comes to metal. he can sing, he can write, he can melt your face with a guitar, and he can produce great too
Trivium - the second coming of Metallica. seriously. these guys play Metallica songs better than Metallica does. their sound isn't that original these days, but what they do they do well
Twisted Sister - probably more hard rock than metal, but ya gotta love these guys. their album "Stay Hungry" epitomizes angst.
...and that's just what I have albums for.
...man that took forever to write.

yeah I forgot Rammstein because I don't have them ripped to my pc yet. that was just what I have on my HDD. *looks at the stack of CD*. im not going through those for you too, b*tch;) you can come over and do it yourself.
less vocals? you can always go with Malmsteen. Arch Enemy usually does one or two instrumental tracks on their albums. and Dragonforce has such long solos that you could forget there were vocals (their vocals are usually about pushing on and triumphing versus death and destruction)

I've been a musician since i was 11. More recently for some odd reason, my patience and interest in music has gone to ****, and my focus has shifted more towards video games.
With that said, there's really only been a select few things I've been able to tolerate as far as music goes. Normally, I am an obsessive audiophile and could sputter off 100 bands you've never heard of whom you should check out.
I ain't gonna do that, it's just not my thing.
But...basically all I've been listening to recently has been Arjen Lucassen's work such as Star One, Ayreon, and Stream of Passion.
This friggin dutch dude is a genius in ways I wish I could put into words. Some words that come to mind are melodic, cheesy, heavy, acoustic, folky, virtuoso, progressive.
He basically writes, records, and produces everything himself. Only people he ever has come in are guest vocalists. A few i can think of off the top of my head are Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth), James Labrie (Dream Theater), Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad), Russell Allen (Symphony X), and Dan Swano (Bloodbath, Nightingale, many others).
So all of his work tends to have a very similar sound and all carry similar structure and themes or lack thereof, and just have this amazingly well thought-out clarity and genius to them.
Most of his work is essentially progressive metal but it bounces in every possible direction you can imagine. Check em out...
as for other stuff...i find myself listening to a lot of Bauhaus, Anekdoten, At the Gates, and Astrid Gilberto. So much for jrock and swedish death metal fanboyism. That's soooo 2005. Haha. :D

New...but not terribly original :p Actually they do put one or two tracks that differs (Voodoo, etc.), but those don't get radio play in Peoria (one time they put one of those songs on the air and people actually complained that it wasn't enough like their other stuff?
Did you happen to make it to Peoria or elsewhere when Godsmack toured with Metallica a while back? They had a second drum kit that Sully got on at one point and had this long drum solo/duet thing. Not sure what it'd actually be called but it rocked - Sully is actually a really good drummer. No, unfortunately I have not seen them in concert. However, they do have a several versions of a drum battle on Youtube for Godsmack. Perhaps it's that one? Hmm...

Either way...I strongly advise staying away from the mainstream when it comes to metal. The Passion of Lovers is a great song. I also love the use of guitar on Hollow Hills. They use a violin bow on the guitar (which a lot of modern post rock bands do like Sigur Ros), and it makes a great eerie noise.

They describe it as "a pleasant addition to the game" but I don't think the word 'pleasant' should be anywhere near this music.
Imagine taking a stroll through Trent Reznor's subconscious while he's having a nightmare ... now think darker and more corrosive ... and you're getting close ...

Yeah, I was pretty surprised that the 360 came with a Porcupine Tree song on it. They're not that well known in the USA, being an English band and all.
If you're interested in their music, I'd recommend picking up their latest album, "Fear of a Blank Planet" or "In Absentia." The album that "Shallow" is on ("Deadwing") is very good, but it's not their best.

Wait, are you kidding? Opeth's latest album is not only their best, but it's a masterpiece! One of my top 10 albums. What don't you like about it?
Here's some trivia for you in case you didn't know - Steven Wilson (lead singer/mastermind of Porcupine Tree) is good friends with Mikael Akerfeldt (lead singer/songwriter of Opeth).

he was also producer on every album from blackwater park to damnation, did backup vocals in Bleak, and wrote the lyrics for Death Whispered A Lullaby and doing countless more harmonies...
Much as Mikael guests on 3 songs in Deadwing...
they actually were my favorite band until they started disregarding the reason they were a band in the first place(the music), Mikael took control of writing, he started turning into a controlling coke addict/arrogant prick and lost 2 of their most important musicians. The dynamic disappeared. Ghost Reveries was amazing only because they were still intact. They renewed my faith in what was to be Opeth again, after the Deliverance and Damnation tragedies. Now it's just downhill...the next release I can pretty much guarantee it will blow, with the new drummer and guitarist. We'll see. Mikael isn't a miracle worker, he just knows how to write one hell of a melody.
*gasps for breath* allright...

Fair enough. You've obviously been a fan of the band a bit longer than I have, which means that you're more familiar with their earlier work than I am. I mostly listen to Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park, both of which I still regard as masterpieces. We'll see how they fare with the new musicians on the next one.
