How does this work?
Check out this animation:
Hopefully it should show up in your browser...
Click this link to see it animated (http://www.subliminalmessages.com/carinsurance17f.htm) ;)
The above site contains a lot of those things where they try and scare the hell out of you by suddenly flashing pictures from the exorcist (so be warned (the one linked to above isn't one of those)).

It's got to be an optical illusion, but even so it's pretty weird (probably not something you'd want to see just before a maths exam:p)
The animation is misleading because of the thick outer lines. If you did this with a bit of paper you will find that in the second form the hypotenuse of the triangle is not a straight line. Hence, the pieces do not fit perfectly as appears at first glance.

It's not a straight line either way. One's slightly convex, the other concave. the difference in area on that side is equals the 'missing' square.

If you look closely at the animation the line thickens about halfway through so as to disguise the fact.
If you let it play through and then look closely at the line whilest clicking on 'replay' you'll see it snap back to it's original shape.

oh well i guess it isn't the 8th or 9th wonder of the world:(Don't sweat it dude— it totally freaked me out the first time I saw it ;)
Half of the illusion is due to the power of suggestion. The page poses questions like "How is this possible". It's a loaded question— it suggest to you that it is possible, when in fact it isn't.
