Hope this hasn't been posted yet, and I somehow missed it.
Achievements on the PC and downloadable content, after all?
http://www.aeropause.com/archives/2007/08/bioshock_to_sup.php
According to this fellow, the most recent issue of PC Gamer (he must be talking about the US version) has a blurb stating that the PC version will support Games for Windows Live. He's speculating that this could mean achievements will be supported. This could also mean downloadable content.
This also has me wondering if the internet activation is part of Live, and tied to a Live account.
Of course, this is purely a rumor and may not have any substance at all (2K Elizabeth has said no achievements), but you never know . . . 2K might have changed its mind at the last minute?
Anyway, I just thought I would let everyone know about this rumor.

I wish I knew officially but I don't see why it wouldn't be supported. Seems like it's the same sort of reporting/querying across the Live network for the achievements. The PC versions of both Shadowrun and Lost Planet use achievements.

Something to do with some companies didn't sign on to the windows live thing, 2k included, so no achievements. It was confirmed here that there are no achievements in windows, and no one has said anything about that changing... Would be cool if there were though, but oh well its not a very big deal imho.

I don't care if achievements are in or out either, but for those who do care I thought I would mention this.
I know 2K Elizabeth said the PC version of Bioshock would not support Games for Windows Live (only have the Games for Windows Logo), but again it's possible 2K may have changed their minds at the last minute. If there are no exclusive plasmids as she also claimed, then how is the PC version getting the rest of the plasmids? Will it have them right off the bat? Patch? This rumor lends a little credence to the notion that on the PC version of Bioshock we could be downloading the extra plasmids from Live, just like 360 owners will.
Because after two magazines stating that there will be downloadable plasmids on Xbox Live, I find the news about that hard to discredit.

I wouldn't worry about whether there are achievements or not, a game's a game, just play it and enjoy :p

Before anyone points out "there is no such thing as Live for Windows" . . . yes, the official title is "Games for Windows Live". But it's easier to say "Live for Windows". So just because the PC Gamer didn't use the exact title, it doesn't automatically invalidate the rumor.

Mmm, this shouldn't be a surprise to begin with. Any game supporting the "Games for Windows" logo on the PC box-art indicates a LIVE-aware status and support for Achievements.
Unless of course you're going to run BioShock on XP.

Huh. On the games for windows site, Bioshock isn't on their upcoming games list. http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/Pages/featGames.aspx At the bottom, look for upcoming games on this page. Bioshock isn't there.

Those are just the "featured" games. Bioshock is listed elsewhere on the site.

Microsoft is notoriously bad for keeping the site up to date.

Yeah, XP users could be left out in the cold if this rumor is true. Unless this will be the first game that brings Live-enabled features to XP? Gears of War will have Live on XP for sure, so it's remotely possible some limited Live features could already show up now on XP now.

You'd think this stuff would have been detailed in the PC reviews if it was in there, however I suppose they may simply have neglected to mention it. Hard to believe anything would be added after the review builds were completed.
Anyway, I'm still holding out hope for PC achievements, although I guess I don't really care. Just be nice to have the same game as everyone else.

Augh, what a killer to the atmosphere that would be having the stupid windows live 'achievement unlocked' pop up now and then!
I really really hope they won't put it in the PC version.

Hmm, that's a good point. Maybe it could just track them in the background?

Well with the 360, you can disable notifications like that, but I'm not too sure about the PC version of LIVE.
Trust me, once you study the achievements, you're gonna want to get them BADLY. Well, sometimes, unless you just like playing to play again, but personally, I think achievements add more replay time usually, if they are good enough.

i personally think that achviments bring alot of replay vaule and also there might be some real good ones that will help you try harder like use all the plasmids or frezze ten splicers or iginate 5 splicers on fire with one snap of the finger

Well, unless Elizabeth somehow missed this post . . . since she has yet to deny this rumor, it gives me some hope that it's true.

I think I'm gonna quote myself on this one.
Dead Rising definitely had the most innovative achievements to date. They were all fun, and not impossible, except Zombie Genocider, which even using the fastest way possible took FOREVER! Sigh.
I HATE most multiplayer achievements. They're mostly "Make/Do X amount of (Whatever)". It's so stupid...
I love it when Achievements make me do something interesting and fun and/or, when I've done it, I feel like I've actually Achieved something.

I have a 360 and really don't get the whole achievements thing. I much prefer a game that has cool unlockables once you reach some milestone in the game rather than being rewarded for hours of determination with a flash of text and a bump in a pretty irrelevant gamer score.

What is the point of the achievements anyway? I've never owned an Xbox or a 360, and I don't have Games for windows... sooo what do they do?

Concidering the fact that MS have been pushing that whole "Games for Windows" thing with Halo 2 and Shadowrun, it really wouldn't surprise me since this game is a 360 and PC exclusive.

Achievements are kind of like cub scout badges, if you ask me. At least, they way they're implemented in Bioshock and a lot of other games. Another patch on the sleeve! :D
Now, if achievements actually gave you a cool item or unlocked a secret part of the game, then I'd be excited about achievements.

There is not reason the achievements can't be synced with unlockables - this is what happens on some games.
They do keep you playing, they are odly compelling at driving you to do more, for example i wouldn't have completed 100% of, ahem, lego star wars 2 if it were not for the achievements.

It wouldn't be fair on XP users otherwise.
Windows Live still doesn't make Vista a killer app in my mind, even if it was the way to unlock all aspects of a game, and the game would no longer be a killer app (because of this very fact) either. I simply wouldn't buy either one, let alone both.

Agreed, i said synced not linked - i.e. the achivement and the unlock are got for the same thing - not that one is required for the other

Not sure i made the argument that it was worth buying Vista or was a killerapp - but as I happen to have Vista already it is only extra gravy - but hey i will always take extra gravy if it is on offer (and cranberry sauce).

That is horribly incorrect. GfWL is NOT part of the GfW requirements. I don't know where you are getting your information, but you should slap the people giving it to you. GfW is NOTHING more than a few simple set of requirements and a little banner on the game box. GfWL has its own set of requirements and regulations that is separate from the base GfW program. GfW and GfWL are both voluntary programs and you are not forced to volunteer for GfWL to get GfW support. Its totally different from Single-player only Xbox 360 games, where they are required to be live-aware and have achievements. Now, if a PC game uses GfWL it is required to have those achievements.

but pc achievements have been done before, im not talking about vista either what about all of those games like medieval where you can "Unlock" other country's to play the only thing thats different for "Vista Only" and "Xbox Only" achievements is that they get published (or w/e) and you get gamer points really it would be easy to have say "Little sister saviour" as a pc achievement but lust have a special "Achievements" page in the actual menu screen of the game look at Medal of Honour You can get medals Or Fallout even kill kids in that and you get the title of "Child Killer" its really all the same
