The facility is in the game so I don't regard it as a cheat.
First, move all colonists bar one out of the colony. Not necessary but easier. Make a note of the remaining colonist(s). Select 'exit' to pull down the menu you use for 'save'. Select 'Enter World Builder'. Find the colony you want to close.
Select Map Mode - terrain. If the settlement is on a hill use the 'convert to flat' option and click on settlement. Then use 'change to ocean' which will get rid of any remnants of your settlement. Then select a terrain and click it on the ocean square of the now defunct colony to replace the original terrain
Change to Player Mode, and select and replace the colonist(s) that got destroyed with the colony. Close the World Builder and continue with the game.
Unfortunately the World Builder option is an invitation to cheat, but as there is no other facility in the game for getting rid of unwanted temporary colonies, it seems OK here.
Whoops!! I seem to have installed Colonize-mapedit.zip which I think I downloaded from
