It's the 2K Forum, we should have a thread for Prey.

We recently released a v1.3 patch for Prey. If you haven't heard about it, here's some details:

Meh I wasnt a fan of the game. Nothing special about it and was kinda dumb you couldnt die and didnt have anything to make it stand out. Its a good rental.

It was a fun shooter with a few good ideas. Let's hope we won't have to wait many years for the sequel. :D

Prey was totally unfun and unoriginal (Star Trek; Borg anyone?). "Tommy, safe me!" was the whole point of the cheesy plot. I hope DNF will do better.

It's a very cool game. Maybe not the type of the game I would spent weeks on replaying it over and over and over but I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to Prey 2.

i liked the game... not only because you could see yourself in the mirror^^ that refers to this thread (http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39)... the multiplayer was kinda fun too... when somebody was running upside down on the ceiling and you just switched-off the ceiling-gravitation :D

I'm a fan of Prey and a member of a Prey forum at 3D Realms - isn't that forum still doing well? What is the relationship between 2K Games and 3D Realms? (Maybe it's not a bad idea to include a dedicated Prey forum under the 2K banner?)

Prey. Overhyped is what I think of. It was the next big shooter apparently. It was rushed. You spend decades working on a game, give it a bit more depth please. It was short, it was easy (even on Cherokee, which wasn't that different), and it had absolutely no replay value. I needed choices, needed a better connection with characters. I felt like nothing really mattered. I wasn't sad when Jen died, I wasn't sad when Enisi got owned, and I wasn't happy when I won (which was a few hours after purchase). It's worth renting, but it is a game was easily forgotten.

It was indeed a splendid looking game.
But sadly beyond visuals it felt overly - for the lack of a better word - chunky.
Hamfisted maybe. Heavy handed. The narrative, the gameplay, even some of the mechanics. Yes, the ghost-world fighting to get back into the world was indeed more like a workaround for quicksaves. I was more annoyed by it to be honest.
I'll probably replay Prey some day just for the fun of the visuals, but it'll never be in my book of shooters that really mattered.

It was ok, I thought the story for the most part was pretty cool but it never seemed to go above average. For the first time I felt like the weapons in an FPS didn't deliver.

Some of the stages were fantastic, others not so much. I loved Art Bell though, he was a great touch. Would I play a sequel? Yeah, sure.

I played a demo-version of Prey, but I didn't think its a super game. Like Doom...

the only thing i liked in this game apart from the visuals was the song that played when the bar was being sucked up by the ufo "Dont fear the reaper" oh and how the poker machine on the alien ship always gave royal flushes:D

I think Prey sufferd from too much pre-release saturation, everybody knew all the gravity stuff way before it came out,and I dont think it did the game any favours.I played it again very recently, and its an OK 7/10 bit of fun and nothing more. Some nice looks too.:)

I liked Prey because it's just really solid. The gameplay, music (gotta love the blue oyster cult during the abduction), graphics, everything was just really tight. I never got to play the multiplayer because my version...wasn't entirely legit.
I really liked how everything alien was biomechanical and had a really gooey feel to it that you could really see/feel. Not to mention the graphics engine was really smooth and I'd get 100+ FPS at all times. Kick-ass.

I had a lot of fun with Prey, I'd give it a 9/10.

All the gamers who enjoyed Doom 3 and Quake 4 should be very pleased with Prey. The Doom 3 engine has never been so robust and looked so great. The story, while not groundbreaking, delivers more dramatic moments than its two predecessors and should definitely please sci-fi aficionados. The no-gravity environments, the crazy portals, and spirit walking with an ethereal bow&arrow enhance the gameplay.

However, what I disliked about the game is its relative shortness, probably a bit more than Doom3 and Quake 4, in spite of the adaptive level of difficulty; the shortness was brought to the forefront by the fact that you could never die and were always making forward progress.

Also, the portal system can get a bit repetitive at times, but it's such a new and cool looking feature that it's easily forgotten.

Prey is simply jaw dropping, with ridiculously beautiful lighting and particle effects. The weapon design is unique, and even though there are not a zillion of them, the core selection is definite quality. The voices are very good too, and the music has a varied selection of licensed tracks (Don’t Fear the Reaper, Cat Scratch Fever) & a soundtrack infused with native instrumental tones.

Compared to some of the newest games, I thought that Prey's engine would start showing its weaknesses, but overall I was pleasantly surprised by both the look and the content of this game.

yes i agree about the shortness of it only took me about 5 days to beat

lurchibald

it took me 1 day to beat because i knew it didnt really matter if i died so i took heaps of chances like running up and using a rocket at point blank etc

BigDaddy93

good idea it took me 5 days becuase i barely played more than an hour or two every day

i beat the game relatively quickly, but its one of those FPSes that is actually longer than usual i think... took me about 7 hours to beat (didnt play non-stop)

the whole not able to die thing was a little to "power-play"ish and imo a little silly

I wonder how long the average playthrough was for the game when they took out the deathwalking minigame and just went with reloading quicksaves.

BigDaddy93

oo god that would have taken forever because of my playing style which was run in on a fight and rely on the fact i will die and just come back

Same with me to a degree. Human Head removed the element of danger by going that route. One wonders why they bothered with adaptive difficulty when you essentially couldn't die. Did players really need two avenues of difficulty removed. The game wasn't harder than your typical FPS in the first place.

Ok i have to disagree one hundred percent. I have been a gamer since i was twelve and have played games since then, i had a gamecube, ps2, xbox, pc gaming rig, and now i have the 360. And I have to tell you that this is by far my favorite game of all time! This is the only game that totally engulfed you in it's story and atmosphere. It was like playing out some amazing sci-fi epic in my own living room, it had everything ! But what really sealed the deal was the Art Bell on Coast to Coast calls and interviews throughout your adventure. This for me, raised the bar on how games should be. Sure halo is heralded as the great sci-fi shooter, but really that game didn't make me feel anything at all. As far as sci-fi games it goes 1) Prey and 2) Half-life 2 and in the future it will hopefully be 3) bioshock.

i heard it was about 10 hours
to me that sounds way too much like the playtesters hadnt played fps before.

i rekon on my second playthough i could probably cut my time to around 3 hours. apparently there's an hour's worth of art-bell interview stuff in the game. i got the game for 25 AU anyway so i'm pleased.

i just wish punkbuster didnt screw with my UAC (vista), cos now ive turned it off (because f.e.a.r multiplayer uses punkbuster too).

I actually LOVED Prey for some odd reason. everyone else i talked to hated it, but not me. I actually like linear games like Quake 4, Prey, Doom 3. Dont ask why, but i hated F.E.A.R.

Dont ask why, but i hated F.E.A.R.

I thought FEAR got pretty boring because you were always fighting the same guys in masks. The bullet time ability was also waaaay overdone and felt like a gimmick

And to think that 10 hours is considered standard these days. Oh how the mighty attention span has fallen :( What happened to the days of the old NOLF length shooters?

And don't anyone come back and say that the game's have gotten tighter or higher quality per minute within the time spent playing. That is BS I can't stand from the mouths of supposed game fans.

Very memorable game, who can forget that moment you find jen??

I even bought this for my dad (to try introduce him to puzzle elements in games)and he loved it.

Playing through it the game felt just the right length, i would buy this again and i dont say that about every 360 game.

I loved the little radio transmissions you got to hear, the really rather stirring music that came in at exactly the right moments (when your out kill every alien you can find after the Jen fight )

The story had a beautiful sentiment to it, definately the game for you if you like to "save the girl"
:)

The death mini game was a clever way of not breaking the immersion.
Made the game one big epic adventure from start to finish, it was like playing a film.
Quick saving and loading would have just made it another up hill grind, but this game was actually fun :)

Yeah, note to all game developers: including the Art Bell broadcasts (and getting him to do them) was seriously cool, and did loads for the immersion. My wife and I catch Art Bell sometimes at night, and that's exactly what his calls are like.

He did them at his own house, which is where he does his broadcasts from. So they were authentic as possible.

On a side note for you fans of the AMP song, I made a music video before the game came out that you can check out at youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aK2Aja9QhSo

This was made before the game's release, so I couldn't capture footage for it. However, I do believe this video is even better than the band's actual one.

I found the Prey Collector's Edition brand new at Bestbuy for $29.99 back in February. I beat the game and loved it. Unfortunatly the multiplayer was horrible (much like The Darkness). Anyways they were two great one player experiences that really didnt need a multiplayer mode anyways.

I was in Wal Mart tonight and the CE for 19.99.

i'd give this game 9.5/10

anyone giving it less than an 8 obviously played it on the gay 360 and shouldn't even be discussing it on this forum.

this game cranked up on high with my 8800 sli rig with my 30" dell can't be beat.

Bioshock is the first game that's come close.

To the 360 owners, please don't call yourselves gamers...
