In my last game I went up and completely wiped out the Dutch and the English as they were about to finish thier independece. However, thier names still appeared on the score and they still retained thier scores (around 900). They were also still able to take part in diplomacy.
What's up with that? You cannot defeat your opposition?
They might have had a scout somewhere you hadn't found yet, or a ship in Europe or something. :)

Nope.
I obtained the entire map. Nothing of thiers anywhere. I made sure there was not a bit of fog of war.
If they had a ship in Europe, I woluld expect him to pop out somewhere along the 100 turns they were defeated.

You are correct, they don't die like old colonization. But there are two ways to a competitor of yours will "go away"
1. Attack your oponent but leave him 1 inland settlement. That will stimie their growth for a long time. with no new re-enforcements from Europe.
2. They declare independance and fail.
