Give me Custom Houses or give me death!!!

Greetings everyone - I just wanted to commend Sid and his folks for bringing back one of the greatest games ever made... there are few DOS based games I continued to play till today, wait... there are NO DOS based games I continued to play until today other than Colonization... it never got old and this one does a surprisingly good job at staying true to the original as far as playability.

The only let down is the neglect of some old features but most importantly is Custom Houses. This may be construed by some as an exploit but the game became and the new one becomes extremely unplayable when you've constructed a massive New World Empire and have to run a dozen more ships to Europe every turn. Without Custom Houses, the micromanaging gets to be far too burdensome and I find the end of the game to be highly unplayable. I am pleading that we see a return of some old features in a patch or expansion, but most importantly Custom Houses. All those in favor - back me up on this!

Thanks again for reviving a great game nevertheless!!! :D

Hey, as an original colonization player, Im highly disappointed with a lot of aspects of the game, and I dont consider myself too picky either.

But this game has lots of problems that take away from gameplay rather than add to it.

I personally hate that it takes %30 or so more crosses with each immigrant. my firebrand preachers become all but useless mid-end game, and You can forget about training your own colonists after a few graduating classes.

I find that the game, even though the objective is to declare independence from Europe, forces me to be highly dependent on Europe for everything in the game.

But its better than nothing, I Have to give Sid Meier that, better he come out with a poorly done rendition of the original colonization, than nothing at all, Im hoping some patches will take care of some of our complaints.

I agree - the micromanagement gets very tiresome after awhile.

This games looks like a toned down civilistion 4 for me....I understand they should keep things close to the original, but in fact here is even less subtile stuff than in the original...

ex: indian requesting food because of starvation
the king lowering taxe (used to happen in original col), in this own his like a tax machine, just calling you to raise taxes
the king used to provide you with units and ask you to attack another player

Once in the city management panel graphics are so poor, goods are highly pixellised, the city map (on the right side) is just too much crude.

Also the game feel empty, despite the fact that the indians are animated, you really feel you are alone in the world with your colony, there is no sense of interactivity with other players/AI at all - a complete empty space...quite depressing.

I wonder if somone will have the courage to fix this all up.

Orite! Thanks a lot! I missed that one too. Does anybody know how high the reduction is? Can you get it to sell off when there's less than 300 in there?

I believe that the description for the Warehouse Expansion says it's a 50% reduction by selling back to Europe.

Hi Inquisiteur......Think Colonization, never mind Civilization.

Having played both when they first came out, I can never understand why Civilization (which I soon 'binned') was developed rather than Colonization (which we still play)

And as to the original post, record my vote for Custom Houses.

And yes I am against fabulous graphics at the expense of quality of game play. It is difficult to say in this case whether the improvements outweigh the losses. I am finding the comments of other players from the original Colonization very interesting.
