Same problem here, also with Vista.
When I click 'continue' on the colony charter screen, the game crashes.

I've tried installing on two computers, one with duo core and one with quad processors. Otherwise, basically identical software and other specs. It installed perfectly on the duo core but has had endless problems on the quad processor. I don't know if this is really an issue or just a coincidence. Just like the others mentioned here, the game crashes when it auto-saves just before it starts the first move.
The other error I noticed is that when the online registration from comes up, Civ 4 Colonization is not on the form. Just Civ 4. Has anyone else had this probelm?

I've updated my Direct X to the latest. Some of my friends told me this would work..... but it didn't work for me. Perhaps other drivers need updating. But who wants to start down that road? I wonder what screen resolution people are using. The computer I'm having trouble with has a rather large screen.

Lots of other boards are also reporting Windows Vista errors in the same place.... but not everyone has them. It seems to work fine on some computers and refuses to work on others!

What is the exact error message you are getting. Also out of curiosity do you have CIV IV installed on your Vista Machine.
I already went through the trouble of getting Civ IV to work properly and I wonder if that is the reason I'm not having any issues.
For those that are having trouble please try downloading this fix DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en) and see if that helps.
My computer has Vista Ultimate SP1 with all the updates

OK I got it working. What I did was go back to the beginning of the game and went to advanced, then options and then graphics and set the screen size to the size of my monitor. It still didn't work, so I went back to the same menu and dropped the graphics to medium. Then it suddenly worked.:D

Then that might be a difference also. I am running it at 1024x768 with High Graphics and AA at 2 on my laptop. My resolution of my computer though I have set to 1920x1200
Edit: Further Testing I set it to 1920x1200 High graphics and AA at 2 and was still able to proceed through the game with no issues. Just an FYI. Putting it back on 1024x768 because I prefer it that way personally ;)
I rember when Civ III (yes 3 not 4) came out there was a problem with graphics values and starting the game - sometimes it would go black with a high pitch noise in the background as far as I can remember.
At the time this happened to me the first expansion was out and the patch fixed it but I am sure there were also instructions to fix it as well. Not sure what they were but I am sure someone could do a search and find them. Probably something like booting into safe mode, starting the game, setting some values then rebooting and continuing as normal.
If it is a similar problem its a bit of a strange coincidence.

I run this on Vista Ultimate 64 at the highest resolution, and the game runs flawless so far. I am using a Gigabyte desktop with a 9600GT video card and 4gb of ram.

I'm having the same problem as Rappit... the unit graphics are missing except for their hats. Anyone else seeing this?
My system:
Dell Inspiron 1525
Intel Dual T2370 1.73GHz, 2GB RAM,
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Could the video card be the issue? not beefy enough?
