I almost jumped out of my seat when during gameplay Atlas called me by my first name.

I never knew the main character had a name and was wondering if this was something 2K added to the game. People with names that would normally be in the English language name bank having the character's name spoken.

The protagonist's name is Jack; where in the game that is first established I'm not certain, though.

I believe that the name was taken from the note on the present Jack receives on the plane in the very beginning of the game. What is the part in the game where you have believed Atlas to call you by your first name? As far as I remember, Atlas never calls you Jack.

That just got me thinking though...Fontaine was probably the one that named him Jack, ha!

It is a good trick in the FPS- world not to name the protagonist, or at least not make a big deal out of it, as it improves the illousion that "You" are the hero. But still, I never think of him as anything else than Jack, but does the name appear anywhere else than in the present on the airplane?

I tell ya's I could swear Atlas calls me by name once during the game. I think it was before his 'personality' switch.

I don't think so. I also like the idea of a (at least semi-nameless character. Throughout most of the game I felt I was the protagonist. A feeling I never get when playing third-person games of any form.

Wow! Really? What part or when does he call you by your name?
He's always had a name.

Would you kindly clarify that? 'Who' has always had a name?

Jack, the character. He's always had the name of Jack. You said "I never knew the main character had a name and was wondering if this was something 2K added to the game. " You can see the name from the beginning in the airplane on the gift box. Or are you talking about something completely different?

I still want to know where this part is rumored to be. You can find a list of the radio messages here :

Andrew Ryan does, though.

Ryan:
You think you have memories. A farm. A family. An airplane. A crash. And
then this place. Was there really a family? Did that airplane crash, or was
it hijacked?

Just kidding :P
I'm pretty certain the only mention of Jack's name is at the beginning of the game.

Hahaha, very clever of you, adidaq.

I mean, besides Atlas calling the character "boyo", Ryan does provide additional names like a "termite" or a "hun", or my personal favorite... "tree frog". :D

Also note that the name "Ryan" is an Irish or Gaelic name meaning "king". I would expect something... "Russian sounding"... but otherwise the little letter switcharoo with "Ayn Rand" wouldn't work... plus the irony wouldn't be there either. Also when I saw Ryan's office in Rapure Center Control... the placard above said "A.Ryan"... which spells "Aryan"... but I realized that Ryan doesn't support Nazism.

Yeah, I agree...but perhaps he changed his last name too. As he changed his first name from "Andrei" to "Andrew".

Ryan means king? Well, every day you learn something isn't completely wasted.
A.Ryan = Andrew Ryan is pretty funny. I wonder if it was meant to be like that. However, if he was originally Russian that would make him Slavic, and one of the prime objectives of the Nazis was to push the Slavs back across the Urals, as they believed that they had been "invading" Europe. It is quite funny, as the Aryan and Germanic tribes did that too, "pushing" is evidently only considered immoral if someone else does it.

But, now I am almost sure of my little conspiracy theory! In 1918 the old Tsar family of Russia was executed by the Reds, however there have always been a story that the youngest son Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov had survived. However, with modern DNA tests it was recently (2008, after Bioshock release) proved that he had not, but if you look at his signature, with Tsarevich being a title, and Nikolaevich a middle name it would be A.R, Andrew Ryan, with Ryan meaning king. As we know Andrew Ryan was Russian it is evident that he had changed his name, and the fact that he would still be hunted by Bolsheviks may give him the motive.
As Alexei was 13, a week or so to 14, when the assassination took place, that would make Andrew Ryan, if they are the same person, 56 which seems likely. Another interesting thing is the Prince's long livety, according to the killers he continued to live after being shot and stabbed with bayonets, until he finally died and it became apparent that he was protected by a a robe with several gems sewn into it. Golfclub anyone?
Ryans political views however are not very royalist. But this particular past might explain his hatred of Altruism which he considers the same as Communism. He does neither openly denounce dictatorship, he evidently believes in the enlightened absolute, the rightful despot. He certainly "speaks like a true emperor", whatever that may be. It would also explain his wealth, or at least the start of it. I suppose that most Russian refuges of their time seldom made it out from the country with anything more than the clothes on their bodies, a wealth which he later increased.

However, I don't think that the developers were very serious about this reference, but I think that they must at least have kept it in mind.
btw... off-topic?

I've never really noticed that before. I'll make sure to listen better next time I play.

Wasn't Alexi a hemophiliac though? I don't know for sure but hemophilia was hard to control back than and Alexi would of died young anyway. So it wouldn't really make sense for Ryan to be him because Ryan lived to be at least 60. But he was Alexi it could explain why he never spliced.

Just read my post, Alexei was the heir to the Russian throne in 1918, but was killed by the reds :-)

Aye, Alexei was a bleeder, however (not being an expert though) that shouldn't make it all that improbable to reach 56 if one lived carefully? I do not think that Ryan was "meant" to be Alexei by the developers however, I think he was supposed to be more of a reference, much like Atlas being Titan Atlas, Atlantis and Atlas Shrugged. Andrew Ryan is probably also Ayn Rand, the same first letters at least. Otherwise they could just have made him an US or English citizen which his name and ideology hints.
