View Full Version : Colonization reviews
Well the reviews are going to be popping up, here's Eurogamer's (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=242130&page=1).
Happily, it turns out we were all worrying for nothing. One of the first things that hits you about the reassuringly magnetic Civ IV: Colonization ('Colonization II' would have been so much neater) is just how similar it is to its ancestor. There's the lone ship surrounded by sea and darkness. There's the beige settlement screen with its unshowy building illustrations. There's the eager emigrants waiting on the resolutely 2D dockside. Wisely, Firaxis has resisted the urge to meddle. There are no pointless graphical embellishments, no new, nailed-on concepts. Yes, there are changes - a sleeker interface, Civ IV-quality visuals, multiplayer, borders, unit promotions... - but none of them upset or over-burden the expertly stacked Colonization applecart.

Probably, but I'm waiting for a few reviews and to see if there are any technical issues (ex: stability or drm).

I can tell you about DRM now. We have a CD check, and you need to keep the disc in the drive to play, and that's all!

Excellent, thanks!
Having never played Colonialization before, I will have to check out the reviews and see gameplay before getting this.
However, I'm glad this doens't require Civ 4 to play since my Civ 4 is for Mac and this is aparentally just for Windows.
Reviews are rolling in - keep checking the first post for links, and if you see one, post it and I'll add it.

Legit concern here!

I've played the original colonization game to death... as have my whole family. We run it in a dos window..... in XP!.
Now we have Vista, and the new game!!!!!
But it won't work. It keeps crashing at the same spot where everyone crashes. You install, start the game, chose your leader and world, and then before the first move it autosaves, then crashes, closes and a window pops up saying that Windows has closed the game due to errors.
I've updated my Direct X and other drivers, but it refuses to play on my computer. I installed it on another computer, (older) and it works on that one. Wha...? Perhaps we should go back to the DOS game until they fix the bugs.

I am having this same problem, I bought my game from Steam I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Does anyone know if there is a solution?

This new Civ Col is quite terrible. If it were a civ4 mod, it wouldn't even be in the top 20 best mods. I can't even build a mine on iron for christ sake. There are just too many things to even mention that just drive me nuts about this. It even re-uses civ4 diplomacy text, graphics, ect. ect.... Its hard to beleive an entire development team created this, when I can think of about a dozen mods which are considerably better than this were created by a single person. If people from fireaxis are reading this, you need to fire your team and look at civfanatics.com and find some of the highly creative and talented mod makers there.
Its really no comparisson, if you'd take the time to actually play test the game your releasing you would know it is garbage compared to whats possible.

Well I am quite pleased with Colonization 2. And my fanatical wife will be delighted when I give her the game for Xmas! She had better be....
A lot of the irritations with the original - which we still play regularly on an Amiga - have been resolved. We can get boats on to inland 'lakes', there are reminders of what Indians teach and what they want to trade, I can now close temporary colonies, there is a good options menu.........etc
There are things which have been lost for no apparent reason, but on the whole we can live with that............speaking, that is, as someone who has no intention of using the on-line option.
