View Full Version : Great Upcoming Games?

Okay so BioShock I first heard about through word of mouth...

In these forums I've heard of two other games that sound great (STALKER and Alan Wake)

I've also heard of Blue Dragon and Mass Effect as good upcoming games.

Who's got more?

...oh and as far as gaming magazines are considered I live under Ayers Rock.

BioShock, Mass Effect, and STALKER aside, my most wanted list looks like this:
Half-Life 2: Episode 2 (also includes the much delayed Team Fortress 2, and my most anticpated, Portal (Preview (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200703/N07.0302.1313.05101.htm)))
Command and Conquer 3
Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary Edition
Assassin's Creed

Silent Film

I must say I'm looking forward to the Tomb Raider remake. Although I was a bit disappointed with Tomb Raider Legend. I had hoped Crystal Dynamics would do a better job than they did, I didn't think it went far enough to salvage the franchise.

Others:

Crysis
Jericho
Assassin's Creed
Alan Wake
HL2: Ep2 / Portal

I'm also looking out for Age of Conan, a MMO game based more on player-skill with a substantial single-player section. How interested I am depends on whether it will have a monthly fee, which hasn't been officially decided yet, as far as I know.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (November)
Alan Wake (PC)

I had hoped Crystal Dynamics would do a better job than they did, I didn't think it went far enough to salvage the franchise.I enjoyed TRL, apart from the fact that it was too short, and the vents in Kazakhstan were like something from Crash Bandicoot. Bolivia, Ghana, and the later part of Peru were like meeting a long lost friend. Hopefully 10th will be more like that.

As for Crysis, I personally don't see the appeal. Apart from the bleeding edge graphics (my current machine shudders at the mere thought of loading it's screenshots) what is it bringing to the genre?

Apart from BioShock, I'm personally looking forward to:

Fable 2

Alan Wake

Assassin's Creed

Alone in the Dark: Near Death Investigation

Mass Effect

Jericho

Crysis

Portal

White Gold (although there's a good chance it might be awful)

The next game in the Hitman franchise.

The next game in the Zelda franchise.

And maybe Team Fortress 2 for the Spy character.

BioShock
Episode II (because of Portal and TF2)
Alan Wake
Fallout 3
Assasin's Creed
DN Forever ;)
The Crossing (could be cool)
the X-Com title by IG

hmm maybe there's more...

Fallout three is still in ultra-mystery mode...

We'll see it in maybe two-three years?

Team fortress rocked socks, and the new one looks a little goofy, but hopefully that same awesome gameplay will hold up.

A number of platformers have since come along that have bettered the TR series, while playing Legend I was constantly thinking 'PoP is better than this', 'Soul Reaver does this and that better', etc.The series really started to feel like it had run its course several iterations back and I just didn't feel Legend really did enough to pull back from that.

I also just expected more from Crystal Dynamics, especially as Soul Reaver 1&2 exhibits superb characters and storytelling. So I had hoped this would be one area where they could improve the TR series. I'm looking forward to the remake more for nostalgia, I think.

Anyway, I anticipate Crysis being a great action game. A game doesn't necessary have to innovate for me to enjoy it. As much as I appreciate games that attempt to push the boundaries, sheer entertainment value is also important and that's where I think Crysis will deliver. HL2 didn't particularly bring much new to the table either, it concentrated more on existing ideas and doing them extremely well.

Well for 360 this year my games are Halo 3, Bioshock, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, and Unreal Tournament 3. Wii: ssb brawl, mario galaxy, metroid 3, Resident evil, Sadness, No more heros. Pc: hl2 ep2 DS: Zelda, pokemon.

DN Forever ;)

There's never been such an ironic name for a game...

Anyway, in no particular order, and to reitterate most of what has been mentioned already:

Fallout 3
Alone in the Dark: Near Death Investigation
Mass Effect
Alan Wake
Metroid Prime 3
Assassins Creed
Quake Wars: ET (I'm no multiplayer fan, but this game could change my mind)
Fable 2
Lost Odyssey
STALKER (I know... It's out already, I'm still looking forward to it though ;) )
Half Life 2: Episode 2
Super Paper Mario
Forza Motorsport 2
Crysis (I guess... I mean, everybody else in the whole world is looking forward to it)

Yowza! Thats over £550 of games! And there's probably more too.

I never really played either of those games (in fact TRL is only the second in the series that I've owned, the other being #1) so I had nothing better to compare it to. Anyway, I anticipate Crysis being a great action game. A game doesn't necessary have to innovate for me to enjoy it. As much as I appreciate games that attempt to push the boundaries, sheer entertainment value is also important and that's where I think Crysis will deliver. For me, the story (and the delivery of said story) is what makes the HL saga great. It sucks you in. Well that, and the fact that Dog is the coolest robot ever.

Stalker has the atmosphere, BioShock has both the story and the atmosphere, but I just don't see either coming through strongly in Crysis. Maybe it's just the way they've marketed it, pushing the graphics over everything else, but as far as I can tell there simply isn't any substance below the style. Until I see some, it falls into the category of 'meh'.

Silent Film
03-29-2007, 10:06 AM
I dunno, I thought Far Cry could be incredibly intense at times, especially if you were involved in large fire-fights or were being hunted through the jungle - the monsters were fearsome and deadly and it was not a forgiving game. I felt constantly challenged but rarely frustrated (well, except near the end), and I think with Far Cry it's more than just style, it was was definitely attempting to break away from the linear pathways and scripted-ness we see in most shooters. I'm interested in seeing how Crysis develops this further.

It's true that the story was crap and I hope this is one aspect that is improved in Crysis. Obviously we'd want the best of both worlds, but ultimately if I can tolerate weak gameplay if the story is good, I can also tolerate a weak story if the gameplay is good.

What HL2 did differently than a lot of games though is it kept you moving forward/on the edge of your seat. There was always something happening. And although that made for a shorter game I had a more enjoyable experience overall than FPSs that were too long no matter how expansive/beautiful they were (Unreal 1, Far Cry)

Silent Film
03-29-2007, 11:20 AM
That doesn't sound a whole lot different to be honest, the same can be said of Call of Duty, its many clones, Max Payne, countless others. HL2 relied a lot on scripting to pace you through the game, and I don't necessarily mean to say that's bad, as far as scripted games go HL2 is the best out there, but it can feel very restrictive at times.

It's something Gabe Newell favours - It's about experiencing "as much entertainment as possible" in a single playthrough. He reasons that most gamers only experience a fraction of the game content when given more freedom, and that's something he sees as wasted development time so therefore it's best for the developer to present it to the player.

nmrahde
03-29-2007, 11:25 AM
Oh I agree HL is heavily scripted. Listening to all the commentary on Ep 1 proves that. Kinda made me mad to realize I had been manipulated the whole way through, but da** if it wasn't an enjoyable manipulation.

I never got around to playing CoD 1, and didn't find Max Payne that enjoyable. CoD 2 is a good edge of the seat game though as far as story/action pacing goes. Also gave me a lot more respect for the guys on all sides that had to slog through it than I ever got from learning about it in school (although Im sure we could fill a whole forum on the sad state of schools)

There aren't really any other games that I really look forward to, besides Bioshock.

Sure, Assassin's Creed and some other upcoming games will probably be enjoyable, but I'm not that hyped for them and could easily wait until they are re-released as budget. Which I don't wanna do with Bioshock, at all.

BioShock is my number one but I'm always looking forwar to:

Mass Effect
Army of Two
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Devil May Cry 4
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
The Darkness
Too Human
Fable 2
Mario Party 9 (ever since 8 flopped)
Elder Scrolls V: Whatever they're naming it
Halo 3

I want a lot of games :) I'm a geek. I like almost all genres and can play any game for Mario games to shooters to anything really, so the list of games I want is pretty big. Cahnces are I won't get all of them though.

Alone in the Dark
Sam & Max season 1
Hydrophobia

Mass Effect and Assassins' Creed look interesting but I'm not yet sold on the gameplay.

BioShock

The Witcher
HL2: Episode Two
Alan Wake
Assassin's Creed

You know what the biggest joke is? One of the polish gaming magazines, Reset, have published in year 2000 a short article entitled "What will games look like in 10 years?" One of the points was "We will finally get to play Duke Nukem Forever". Now it seems they may have been overly optimistic :D

Call of Duty 4
Bioshock

Starcraft 2

Splinter Cell Conviction (Double Agent was one of the worst games I've ever played, but Conviction looks pretty damn good)
Gears of War (PC)
Fable 2
Empire Earth III
Timeshift
Resident Evil 4 (PC)

I know, long.

by the way, STALKER sucked. hard. that game was supposed be super-ultra-bad*ss-deluxe open ended, but they got rid of all that in favour of a mostly linear storyline.

Well it is far off, but Obsidian and Gearbox are both producing games based of the "Alien" films. Obsidian is of course doing an RPG, while Gearbox is doing a tactical FPS. I personally can't wait.

Other than that I'd say the new Alone in the Dark looks exciting. Silent Hill: Origins for the PSP looks like it is shaping up to be a nice addition to the series.

And does anyone know what's happening with Alan Wake? I haven't heard much about it recently.

Ahh, didn't know that, thx:) So its more of a blend of the two then. It looks good enough to make a name for itself, whenever the heck its suppose to come out :( The only fear I have is that the levels will be too small to allow truly far free-roaming in the cities and outskirts. Two Worlds is going to be pretty sweet. I found a beta of it online and nabbed it...and was seriously surprised. The graphics obviously need a bit of tweaking but the gameplay was fun (like a good RPG), and the depth of field is so cool, they pull it off really well. Like if you're interacting with an NPC, the focus is on the characters but the background is all blurred tastefully so everything looks nice and smooth and honestly life-like with the good job they do with shading. Two Worlds is like a fun Oblivion.

The Witcher also looks completely badass.
