View Full Version : Why don't the Romans have a unique Legion unit?

Somehow I didn't realize this until recently, but isn't it strange that the Romans don't have a unique unit instead of the basic Legion? After all, "Legions" were unique to the Romans. IMO the basic Legion unit should be renamed Swordsmen (like in Civ4) and the Romans should have their unique Legion or Legionary unit instead.
I know that Romans have the Cataphract unit instead of Knights, but I think most people would agree that the Romans were more famous for their Legionaries than the Eastern Empire's Cataphracts. And I don't think it would be unfair for the Romans to have a second unique unit -- even though some civs don't even have one -- because some civs have as many as four.

It doesn't really matter, the unique units are all just alternate skins they aren't any better. The only units that are better are the ones that have a specificly mentioned bonus like Samura Knights getting +1 attack in the Medieval Era for Japan.

Is that true? I thought the unique units were stronger, like in Civ4.
That's disappointing if they just named and skinned differently.
Anyway, my point is still valid: only the Romans should have Legions whereas the other civs should have Swordsmen.

Yeah, they are just named/skinned differently (besides the ones with explicit bonuses for that Civilization). And I don't know anything about history so I'll stay out of that part.

The Roman Empire was created on the sweat and blood of the Roman Legions. I agree they should have a special legion unit or something of the sort. However its a minor issue and to be honest I hadn't even noticed till I read this thread. 2K has a lot more serious problems on their hands right now so I could really care less whether this gets changed any time soon.

I suppose 2K does have more important things to do with Civ:Rev (although aside from the "save slot lag" I haven't encountered any bugs and serious problems -- but I haven't playd MP yet), but if it's true that "unique" units are just re-skins and don't possess any special abilities of their own, then all it would require from 2K is to rename the non-Roman "Legions" to "Swordsmen" in the next patch. I understand it's unimportant, but it's also probably the simplest problem that could be easily corrected.
I just don't understand why 2K chose to call the Legion units "Legions" in the first place; sadly, some people don't even know what the Roman Legions and Legionaries were, so calling them "Legion" units is probably more confusing than simply calling them Swordsmen.

I actually have a PS3 also.
I chose the Xbox360 version of Civ:Rev because of the Achievements and because I support the Xbox first.
So I guess I just lucked out that I picked the right platform to buy :D .
