Well from what I've read on the Americans, they are really good for an Economic Victory just not that good with anything else. But that's not going to stop me from using them first because AMERICA YA!!!

But in all seriousness, what is a good strategy for them other than Economic

when i play with america i usually win a domination victory simply because as soon as u can build a factory u can pump out units like crazy. In most games my capital can pump out an army of artillery each turn as well as modern infantry. And then i can take out just about any other civ.

Actually I won a multiplayer game the other day with the Americans with a cultural victory...Personally I think it doesnt matter what race you are you can achieve any type of victory you set out to achieve. While each civ starts out with they're own advantages the field can quickly level out with the research tree.

Looking at the Americans special ability I think it is one of the lesser ones. I mean, sure a great person, woo hoo thats great. Unfortunatly everyone knows you have him and if you settle him in a city the spies are just going to take him(I do that all the time to American players). Also, if you look at England they start with Monarchy. The first person to research Monarchy gets a Great Person ... I haven't actually played as England but I assume starting with it is the same as researching it. So basically England also gets a Great Person but they also get a Goverment type and a resource availability.

English don't take a great person. I have said in a thread how it works:

Bonuses as +1 science each cities become infinite.
Bonuses that give you something suddenly don't work

So, if you have China for example in the medieval era you have +1 science each city, but in the ancient era you don't take a free spy.
Americans are good in the modern era but i don't think they are so good to wait so much. But I could give you some tips for great people for America:

Great Leader: settle to spam some warriors
Great Artist: wait to flip a city is good
Great Humanitarian: +50% growth is good at the beginning
Great Scientist: +50% science
Great Explorer: +50% gold
Great Builder: Great Wall or Colossus is good, I would prefer great wall to expand a lot.

I think you could start attack with catapults in the medieval era if you can or do the same thing in the industrial era for cannons to kill somebody

The 2% gold interest bonus in the start is not very effective at all and could have been replaced with something else. The economy victories are not linear but exponential, due to many reasons including more cities, more population and buildings. Therefore the 2% gold interest will be much more important during the later part of the game. Its not until you get up to 10000 gold that you really start to feel that the bonus is actually generating money, which would be 200 at that time.

Agreed, 2% is nothing. Maybe something for America to expand faster would have been nice (Manifest Destiny).

I play as America alot and they are very good for Military and Technology. Like someone said before, they are amazing at pumping out army after army towards the end of the game...P.S. I'm an American and you are the reason I get made fun of when there are other people fomr different countries in my match...

1. I would like to apologize to you. Sorry if I seemed like an idiot in any fashion toward America. Sorry.:(

2. So from what I've read that the Americans can be a late game powerhouse because of the Factory prod. x3. Yes?

But what if that was combined near a moutain with an Iron Mine (think that is what it is.) and near oak with a workshop? Wonder how many hammers that would produce.

I find that the Americans are the most effective civ for when I play. My basic, watered-down strategy is to get democracy to keep ahead of the other civs in technology so I can survive until the modern era. I'm really too lazy to keep track of more than 3 cities for a long time. Even in Civ3 I would always have most of my cities producing wealth so I didn't need to do as much work. Democracy will keep you doing well in the technology race, so when you reach the modern era ahead of the other civs, you can produce better units even faster than they can. Those units can be used for a domination victory, or the production can be used for a massive culture production. Disbanding them will even provide several hundred gold per turn, so long as you have multiple cities capable of effective production. My favorite method is the technological victory, because you can more or less (thanks to rushing and the interest bonus) finish a barebones spaceship in a single turn.
