Just wanted to mention that with the Spanish getting a Galleon so early it make their ability to gain the Lost City of Atlantis real nice and also to get to the island settlers. Had a lot of fun with them last night! Stomped on the Roman AI but hard but I was in Chieftan mode.
I will bump it up a notch tonight and see what I get!

Yes the only problem is that the rest of their bonuses arent very good. And you dont always get Atlantis.

spain in my experience is the best economic civ. if you take a settler or 2 and put them on islands you can get tech incredably fast. because you already have navigation, you can use whales. you can also build a harbor right away which means FAST population. after you get a good tech lead, build a bank and market in all cities and watch the money pile up.

And japanese have +1 food from the start from all sea tiles which imo is much better :)

Don't tell me you think +50% gold production and +1 production from hills aren't very good?

I think I have to explain myself more in depth :) I was referring to the Ancient and Medieval bonuses. To me the start is everything. If you are in the front in the start you will get the bonuses from researching techs. If you are behind they will almost always be taken by some other civ/player. This would often lead to that you fall behind. Then the 50% gold production just gets you back on a tie if you are going Economy victory and you are not too far behind. The civs with good upgrades in Start, Ancient and Medieval are the ones to go for on these small maps imo.

The Ark of the Covent is easily the best wonder especially if you wait and use it to get Cathedrals in your cities.

50% gold production is awesome for an economic victory. I was pumping out 5500 gold per turn in one game (one city).

You didn't really explain anything. You did however say the japs have a better starting bonus. I disagree. Starting with navigation allows you to build the east india company wonder right off the bat. It lasts very long and gives +1 trade too all water tiles. ALL your cities!

I explained what I meant, and I will repeat it now because you don't seem to get it. Due to the inferior starting bonuses, the +50% gold will not be an addition, it will be a compensation. That is all I had to say.

Spain is a very good civilization on average. But it is very risky. If you do not discover grounds (exploration bonus) and you do not discover special buildings where you can get gold or militairy etc (galleon). If you cannot built your second or third city close to a wale (navigation).
MAIN advantage: fastest to get 100, fastest in getting special buildings and find the underwater city for researchs, if you have a wale in your area you have a great boom early on with population and science.
The first 30 moves are critical, you do not get any of those >> just quit..
Strategy: Expand fast to an island with a wale and make it your gold city which will be booming later on with 50% extra bonus of spanish,
so first city is capital, second is gold city and afterwards is it your own decision depending on your own strategy.
You can get the best spots early on by good scouting and fast money and early acces to very good resource (wale) >> Spain is best early game (30 moves) which has effect later on of course :D
