Hey guys,
I made this thread to help consolidate the multiple topics about multiplayer problems. If you are experiencing any sort of multiplayer problems please post them here. I will try to edit this post in the future to include potential fixes to you can do.
When posting your problem please be as detailed as possible. Include things such as what console you are using, what sort of internet connection you have, router or no router, internet settings etc. Also be very detailed when explaining the problem. The more details the better. Hopefully we can figure out how to get some of your guys' multiplayer to work.
Thanks!

Hello here is a repost of a problem im having.
Hello hopefully someone will be able to help me get this to work?
My friend and I have the same cable company Charter he lives in Long Beach i live in Azusa roughly 40 miles apart. We both bought this game and are unable to join each others game please tell me something can be done to make this work. I have tried setting up a proxy server but that didn't help since i only think that works for the http side of things. Short of setting up a vpn what are my chances of this ever working?
I am using UPnP and i know it works
I have Nat type 2 using a linksys wrt54gl with dd-wrt firmware. and his router is an older linksys but its also Nat type 2.
We are attempting to make a private game and when i invite him or he invites me when we are trying to connect we get a Failed to join the requested game! Please try again.
I have tried other custom games and they have worked and same for him.
We have also been able to connect to each other in other games.
Your help is greatly appreciated. IF you can provide me with some port numbers i can try manually opening them to see if that works?

Have you tried other forms of multiplayer? Such as quick match? Also, what sort of error message are you getting?

I have tried custom games and have been able to connect to them. I just tried a quick game and i got a Failed to host a game! Please check you network connection.
Are you able to reveal the port numbers for the game so i can try and open them manually?

Ok I found this link
http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml
They have a list of ports that Gamespy Arcade uses. Not sure if those are the same ports that CivRev needs open, but give those a shot.

I just got the PS3 version. I connected to someone fine. in about 4 seconds. Then when we started, it was retarded. For one it loaded SLOWLY! Then it keep Resyncing with the server (annoying, almost every turn.) then it says that I have to wait 1482743 turns to research something. I'll put up a screenshot if I need to.

MP Game 1
4 or 5 turns in... a player tries diplomacy with me at the last second, seems to hang when time runs out on that turn....
I could pause, and look around the map, and use the R2 button...
everyone eventually quit
MP Game 2
FIRST turn... playing as America, can't even get my great person taken care of before the game freezes... looks like about 2:00 on the clock.
Can't pause, can't look around, can only use R2. Had to use the PS button and quit the game.
Game finds games just fine, lets me join games just fine, but doesn't want to run. I guess its better that they have frozen at the beginning rather than the end!

Just got the game today ( for xbox 360). So i create a private match for me and a friend with a timer. Everything seems good we pick our leaders and start the game. I think we just made it into AD and the game kinda freezes for a second and a message comes up saying you have lost connection to xbox live... I join back to the game and a few turns later same thing happens. Again I try to join back up and i get d/c'd again.
After getting fed up with that I Turn off my Xbox 360, check the disc for scratches ( didn't see any ) and Host another game with no timer ( thinking I could be taking to long and the game is kicking me idk). Anyways The same thing happens again but this time a lot sooner.
To sum this up I tried hosting every type of private match and always the same problem. Even with my friend hosting we were having the same problems. Later on we tried another game with a different friend hosting. This time they both get disconnected and im the only one left. We even tryed public matches with each other joining the game and still the same conclusion...
So I didn't get to complete 1 multiplayer game tonight. I am pretty disappointed in this game.

I have the PS3 version. The majority of the games I joined were ranked games.
I did not get any disconnect or freezing errors but the majority of the errors I got were resynchronization errors. these resyncs happen at the end of EVERY turn.
I would get into the game, make my capital. the next turn my capital will move to a totally different part of the map. I can then build units but cannot control them after they are built. The icon appears on the city but I cannot view the units and it is grayed out. I tried to wait it out several times but when this issue happens it usually means that I am done for and have to leave.
I have noticed that this happens in one game it will continue to happen to any other game I join after. However, if I shut down my PS3 and turn it back on, I have a chance that I will get into another game and it will work fine.
The other issue I guess is actually joining a game. This can take a long time but I am sure this will get worked out eventually...

I posted this in another thread but thought i'd post it here as well. I don't tend to have to many problems connecting to games, the problem is that quite a number of games do not register the results in the ranking. I play mainly head to head ranked games on the ps3.

I have tested my connection on the dashboard with no problems. And I don't have these problems in any other game.

I have a hard time to find multiplayer games at all.
Everytime i'll try to play I'm always the host, never find any games with other people already in it at start. And there's almost no people out to play against :/
Started a free for all ranked game some days ago and in some minutes another one joines and then we wait for about 20mins before the third guy joines and after about 10 more minutes the last one leaves.
Is it just for me that it is like this?
All I can play is ranked head to head before it's impossible to get more than 2 people to play against

I have run into one issue that i'm not sure if it's a bug or not.
Both my friend and I have the 360 version, we fired up a game of head to head with 2 minute timer and agreed to work as allies against the ai. Everything was going fine untill we reached a point around 750 AD that we could not engae in diplomacy with each other for any reason. The repsonse that we each got from the other was either player is busy go away or we are not interested in trading technologies. My friend was way more advanced than I was tech wise but i had a lot more gold than he did so it was frustrating not being able to buy techs. interacting with the other civs was just fine however.

My apologies if I rant a bit, but I'm losing it right now...
I'm running a 40Gb PS3 w/ 2.41 firmware. I cannot connect to or host a game in multiplayer whatsoever. Absolutely nothing.
So I went through the typical troubleshooting process... I checked what ports GameSpy uses and made sure they were forwarded properly. (and why in the world is this game USING gamespy anyway? What's the problem with using the playstation network [which I've never had any issues with, btw])...
A friend who picked up the game for his 60Gb PS3 said he got his to work by sticking his PS3 in the DMZ on his router. Ok then. I reconfigure the router to stick the PS3 in the DMZ. Still no love.
Is my router messed up? Is the DMZ setting on this thing not truly a DMZ? In a last ditch effort to at least get some enjoyment out of the game tonight (since playing Civ with my friend is the entire reason I buy these games) I rewired the house a bit to plug my PS3 directly into the cable modem.
And it still... doesn't... work.
Seriously? What am I missing? Is there some sort of issue with 40Gb PS3s with this game? That is the only difference between my setup and my friend's. We even have the same ISP.
I'm so confused and angry right now. Either I've done something incredibly stupid and have wasted an evening (and night now, since it's past 1am) or I just laid down $60 for a game that is broken. Someone, please, help!

I was able to fix my problem by giving my PS3 a static IP and enabling DMZ for my PS3 on my router to open all the ports and it worked. I tried port forwarding the Gamespy ports that you gave me on that link but they didn't work so i just opened up everything.

Interesting, good to know. The ports on the Gamespy site might be the ones for computer games. Perhaps PS3 needs different ports open? Who knows. Glad you got it working though.

Just a thought, but after all these online issues are fixed, maybe reset the leaderboards? That way anyone who lost due to tech issues can start over?

I just wanted to chime in and say that I have problems with MP as I get logged out of PSN. It's rather frustrating and I just got booted out of a three hour session due to this problem. This has happened the few times I have tried MP.
I play the PS3 version, connect with wifi through an Apple Extreme basestation on a 100mbit-line, the console is put in a DMZ. As I have played a lot of other games online, (Bad Company, COD4, Resistance), for hours without any single problem, I take for granted that the problem lies with CivRev. Unfortunately. I can live with that the PS3 version is sluggish, but non-functioning MP makes me reluctant to even start up the game.

These issues are all too common for gamespy, they always have port issues.. maybe they will get it fixed but like many of my computer games from the past by the time they do most people will likely have given up. I have wireless from next door and no access to the router so I am most likely out of luck, pretty lame since I can play every other game including the demo for CivRev online without issue.

PS3 60gig
Router: Linksys WRT54G (Recent Firmware)
Connection Method: Wireless
Complaint: Cannot connect to any multi-player game mode, Receive message:
"please wait while I connect to your profile"
The game will literally try to connect for 45 minutes until I get tired of looking at the screen. Followed every method listed in the sticky: forwareded all the ports, put the PS3 in the DMZ. I even tried a striaght connection to the modem itself with no prevail.
I can connect to every other multi-player game I own (Warhawk, Resistance, UT3, etc.) except this one.
There is a flood of complaints about this, can you release any information on a patch being worked on?

I think gamespy just hates us LOL. I can see the whole security reason for using certain ports for a PC game but why they would not just let the multiplayer pass through on PS3 seems silly, especially since they obviously did not have this issue in the demo. Maybe they should release an un-patch??

I'm on a PS3 wirelessly connected to an Apple Airport Extreme. I have yet to find or connect to a multiplayer game (although the demo seemed to work just fine). I am able to add friends (through the list ou are scavenging together on this board) but cant play any of them anyway.
Really... should any of us have to be subjected to going through the various stages of opening up ports at home, port forwarding, DMZ etc? I shouldn't have to unsecure my computer just to play multiplayer when ALL OTHER games in my library work fine.
If it's lack of testing or gamespy's fault, the fact of the matter is players will start to mentally identify this game as one that dosen't work online, and stop playing it... even if 2K gets around to making a proper patch for it.
I for one will try a few more times and then probably give up, pissed at squandering 60 bucks on a half-baked game.
Oh, PS moderator. If you are going to forward complaints to another forum... please post a link to the one you are talking about. Just saying there are a lot of forums on the same topic isn't really helpful.

9 times out of 10 on modems/routes the default security is high(which is secure), which means it will block most ports other then the standard ports(TCP/UDP) for any traffic.
So you have a couple of choices:
1. Open up the required ports per game or service.
2. Put the system in question in a DMZ(all ports open no security)
3. Or set the NAT to LOW or no security.
The above goes for any game, service, application, etc.
" I shouldn't have to unsecure my computer just to play multiplayer"
I can guess you are feferring to someone hacking or sending a trojan, virus etc. to your system.
In order for this to happen they will have to write the code to send on that paticular port and something has to be listening on that port as well.

I don't think the PS3 multiplayer issue is a port issue. Before patch 1.10, there were an abundance of players. Right when patch 1.10 kicked in, there were NO players, lobbies, anything.
However, you can still get a game going if you invite people from your buddy list. So, this leads me to believe that the 1.10 patch made it so the automatching and lobby-creation system doesn't connect to a central server or something, seeing as how no one can find/see anyone else.
No offense to gamespy or anything, but why doesn't this game use the PSN? It's a virtually problem free and cost free network. And, you know, this game is on the PS3 and not the PC.

Have PS3 (80G) using a Netgear WGT624 Wireless Router.
Connected wired.
Before I could connect and wait for about 30 mins and not see anyone. Now, however, I get a message saying "You have been disconnected from the network," after about 3-5mins.
Also, I had some friends from the list invite me to games, yet it would say "Failed to join game."
This was in all aspects of online play. I've been trying them all with no success or able to even start a game against anyone. I'll keep trying though.
Edit: Thanks to a few folks that tried to invite me to a game, but I would always get the message "Joining game please wait" or something like that, and the gears would be turning but would never connect. If it's not me, I hope this gets addressed.

Again, I don't think everyone knows how to configure a DMZ on their router or open up ports. Nor do I think it should be required. None of my other games need it, so I don't believe your last statement is true.

From Wikipedia on Civilization IV:
Since the initial release of Civilization IV, many players have complained about several fatal bugs to online play. Specifically, games often go "out of sync," requiring certain players to rejoin the game. Sometimes after one player leaves a game, the game remains frozen permanently and cannot be continued. This "freezing" issue also frequently arises when players use the game's "Retire" function to quit. Additionally, multiplayer games often fall victim to "game crashers" who repeatedly pause games by hitting the Pause/Break button in-game. Despite thousands of complaints from hundreds of online players, Firaxis has never addressed any of the multiplayer problems encountered in Civilization IV.
That doesn't inspire confidence about this game...

I can regularly get games started; just had to add EVERYONE's id that I found here on the forums and then manually invite them to games. Which makes it IMPERITIVE at this point to make sure you post your PSN on the main thread.
Sometimes I even get random joiners who haven't been previously added as friends also. Though this is RARE. It started to happen once I put my PS3 in DMZ. But even before I put it in DMZ I was still able to get games going (though not as easily). So, I dunno; but DMZ your PS3 should be relatively harmless.
Nevertheless, I am able to both host and join multiplayer matches with relative consistantcy; though usually not too quickly (15 mins).
And might I add; multiplayer is awesome

I just remembered that I had previously forwarded a port on my router to my PS3 to play NBA2k8 online. Seeing as how that game is 2k also, maybe that is what is helping me to get games going in CivRev. I know if it isn't set correctly then I can't play 2k8 online very well either; in fact, it gives me similar errors as those in CivRev.
The port is 4658
Of course, there's still the issue of Gamespy...
:(
(To reference, the information regarding the Port# and forwarding it can be found in the 2K sports NBA2K8 instruction manual, page 13)

Hello!
I just updated my version of Civ. Rev. to the 1.10 i guess.
Im using a 100/10mBit ethernet connection.
I have played ranked multiplayer games before the update and it have worked fine. But now Im still waiting for any player to show up... it has been an hour, and its empty?
I was invited to a friendly game meanwhile, but the connection failed a could not be repeated?
I read in the instruction manual that there is supposed to be a "Game Lobby", but i havn't seen it yet. Except the LAN lobby, which of mine is allways empty obviously. Is there supposed to be a Game Lobby in the multiplayer games through Internet or the Playstation Network?
Is it going to be possible to invite people to ranked games, and see all games going on, and perhaps make a "Hot Join" as promised?
Are the team of 2K going to make a effort for a better way to play online, soon?
Sincerly

PS3 40GB
using CivRev 1.10
Ok, so what more do I need to do to get multiplayer to work? I've opened up the list of ports and forwarded them to my PS3, which has a static IP. The list is the one mentioned by the moderator at http://www.gamespyarcade.com/support/firewalls.shtml
Still I see no users in the public game rooms. Also, I have attempted to host a few ranked/unranked games; noone ever connects.
This absence of players seemed to happen after version 1.10 came out.
Please point me via link to what I can do to play this game online; I just bought the PS3, so I have very few peeps on my friends list. Also, I'd prefer to play ranked games, and since the invite option is not allowed for these games, I'd prefer a fix and not a suggestion to invite players.

For some strange reason in my previous game, (2v2 multiplayer), the game would lock up and flicker from time to time.
This REALLY hurt the multiplayer experience because it ruined a few of my starting turns.
Also, I cannot invite players to my games unless i start the game.

There are so many problems with online multiplayer I dunno where to start!!
1..The Leaderboards dont make any sense at all, press R2 to check and see ratings... the Ranks dont match up!! have a look ull see what I mean.
2.. I can't find any games at all in Ranked matches ever since this new patch came in.
3.. I think people can pause the game by selecting quit, they then just wait at the 'do you really want to quit option' until someone else quits and win the game. (this mainly happens in ranked head to head mode)
3.. There seems to be occasional freezing in the free for all matches until someone quits the game.
4. Game of the week randomly exits me.
5..Even before this patch I found it took a while to find a gameon ranked.
6.. Sometimes in a ranked multiplayer match, after buliding your 1st city on the next turn it seems to swap citys with another civ!! this has happened several times!
7.. the game does sometimes disconnect in ranked matches and i think this may counted as a loss... this shouldn't be the case!

Same here. At this point I tried everything I could. For console games I shouldn't have to worry about opening ports or anything like that. It should be connect and go. I can play GTPrologue and race all day with not one problem, this leads me to believe it's more the host site than anything, but I'm not savvy on this so who knows,
Anyway, I'll check back in a day or so to see if any updates were made.
In the meantime is there a post or link to where DEVS may post to see what and if anything is being worked on?

Hello.
I play this on 360 and a friend and I recently ran into an issue while playing teams. What happened was that I got the message saying that the other party left the game. Although I got that message, I kept on playing by myself. I figured that my friend just had a network hiccup and that I'd invite him back to the game once I was able to. AI took over his civ and made some pretty random (stupid) moves. As soon as I was able to send him an invite and he accepts, he tells me that 1 - he has been playing this whole time and 2 - his armies were all in different places. Now, it's pretty obvious that he picked up where the AI left off, but why did this even happen in the first place? It was pretty frustrating (for him of course. I was still golden. lol).

There are some problems with the PS3 online play at the moment. It seems that most (if not all) are unable to play multiplayer, while the GotW is just a mess.
2K are working on figuring this out, and I'm guessing we'll see a fix in not too long.
In the meantime, try playing single player or regular player matches (through friend invitations).

Sometimes when I join a private hosted game I notice the soundtrack starting over and over on top of itself till I have like 20 soundtracks going... at which point I have to restart the game.
Also: Its annoying when someone invites me to a multiplayer game and I'm already in a single player one and instead of taking me to the multiplayer game it just takes me to the main menu. Just take me to the multiplayer game already. Bad UI.
The game needs better multiplayer controls.

EXACT problem I am having. I read through the thread and didnt see anyone answer you specifically with a solution.
Anyone have any ideas? and if its ports or Dm...whatevers then try to explain in english.
Cheers

Mate I have the same issue!!! did you figure it out? My ps3 is in DMZ and it's just seems to be chucking error messages regardless my home network setup...
