What does this mean!? :)
It's a bonus for Japan and Germany I think...
Edit: Sorry, this is an in-game topic.

No it's not. All defender units can have loyalty
It gives +50% defence when they attack you in a city

Actually only Russia, and Japan gets this bonus. Russia gets in the Medieval era, and Japan gets it in the Modern era. It gives 50% defensive bonus to defensive units when they are in there own territory.

But I believe its a promotion that can be earned via combat, no? I havent gotten that promotion myself, but I assumed that that's the case.

If you play the Beta Centuari Scenario you'll be seeing this upgrade a lot. It's quite useful since it gives you the aforementioned +50% defence in home territory. Japan and Russia have the added advantage that all defensive units (I think it's all for Japan) will receive it for every NEW defensive unit they produce in that era and afterwards.

That's good then. I want a reason to play the Japanese but Ceremonial Burial isn't that great a starter.

Ceremonial Burial owns because you can build temples very early.

As Magwill say, Ceremonial Burial is great. In addition, the extra sea square food is awesome, so the japanese start is great.

Yup the Japanese are good at both science and culture which is nice. With the temples you get a good start with culture. With food from sea tiles you can research a lot, while increasing your population and thereby also your culture. I've won 2 deity victories. One with the Japanese where I could have gotten a culture victory but I wanted to get a tech victory instead. Anyways back to the topic, it is very nice to get +50% directly when you create your unit. To me the japanese are a culture and science nation, so they will most likely defend which makes the loyalty bonus good.
