View Full Version : Ideas for New Level Themes!

Bioshock had some amazing themes for the levels. I specifically thought the Medical Pavillion and Fort Frolic were incredible. Quite simply, what are some of your ideas for new themes for level?
Here are a few I've thought of:
Carnival/Fair/Circus- So many options for this type of level and a definate creepiness comes with it naturally. Think clown splicers. It'd be awesome if you could actually go on some rides and maybe even have a room of mirrors(but then you'd have to see yourself). Also, think about a "Freak Show". I know all the splicers are already "freaks" but picture yourself going through this area. The possibilities are endless.
Zoo- I thought this could be an awesome area. It would be fun to explore and it'd be cool if some animals were still alive in their cages. I've always wondered about animals in rapture. You see dead cats and in Suchong's audio diary you see that he forced you to kill the dog as a child. But then again, you hear the audio diary that explains how a womans daughter didn't even know what a tree was, and thought it was a monster. Thinking on it now I remember seeing a polar bear statue in Fontaine's suite. But anyway, this could be an amazing level and one could get really creative with this idea.
What are some ideas you've had?

... Underwater Beach? anyone? anyone?
Zeppelin Rocks

Hedge Maze-you couldn't see very far ahead therefore making every corner a new possibility (kinda goes with the Carnival/Fair topic)
Wax Museum-some Splicers could be standing still untill you reach them upon which you would find out some weren't wax models at all
Industrial/Factory Area-(like a car assembly line ect.) with all the heavy machinary still on you wouldn't hear splicers coming
Graveyard-Obvious spooky atmoshpere (i know Arcadia had a small one but I doubt only 8 people died in Rapture that were buried)
I'll post more when I think of them.

its really hard to come up with new themes for entire levels since they already have the main ones covered: hospital area, fishery, nature area, entertainment area, factory work area, living area, and the final area which looks like a library/laboratory.
most of the ideas can really fall into these other areas as it seems like the dev team really came up with all that's really possible in Rapture. i think the zoo would be a good addition to Arcadia, and the Carnival previously mentioned would fit well into Fort Frolic (perhaps a side level much like the Farmers Market is to Arcadia).
the underwater beach thing i suggested sounded ironic to me consider that even tho Rapture is underwater.. people in Rapture still had no place to swim that i ever saw in the game. it wasnt until after the war that it became flooded, making water a mainstay of the environment.
i think it would be interesting to have an entirely closed in area of Rapture (with no glass walls to see the water) with a fake sun at the end of a large body of water, complete with sand and everything. much like the sun in the movie The Truman Show, if you've ever seen it.
just my two cents

Since this is a wishlist/fanfic inspired by BioShock, it belongs in the BioShock OT Forum. Discussion of actual levels would appear in the BioShock General Game Forum.
You might be happy to hear that a "zoo" level is rumored for the PS3 version coming out later this year. Considering the experimentation that went on in Rapture, animal trials are pretty much guaranteed. Animals spliced with early versions of plasmids could be fantastic.
I think an airlock level would be awesome. Something that let you leave Rapture in a limited fashion and explore the nearby undersea area. It could involve a personal sub or maybe a diving helmet.

if the zoo level is really going to be in the PS3 version.. i'd hope to god they release all that content on the 360 and pc as well.. it just wouldnt be fair to do that if they dont.

Although there seem to be alot of good places in Rapture, where are all the returaunts and shops? I saw a few in Fort Frolic and one or two in The Farmer's Market.
I think there should just be like a mall or something somewhere in Rapture for the citizen's to go and pick out things like, jewelry, clothing, furniture, ect. Different everyday items.
The Returaunts would have been needed too for dates and just special occasions. I dought EVERYONE wanted to go to the Kashmir Resturaunt every time they go out or something.
On the Beach note, yes that would have been cool, some splicers would most likely be hideing in the sand or something XD. But the problem would be that the water would be too cold, bottom of the ocean. So maybe they would have some sort of heat genorator off to the side to keep the water warm eough for the people to tolorate.
The Zoo would have been cool, carnivorous animals would still be around so that would be an interesting boss battle XD.
I agree, if they only make levels for the PS3 that wouldnt be fair, I hate when they do things like that. >_<

If there is special content only for the PS3 and no downloads come for the Xbox 360 than I'll be very angry as well.

Before you guys get all angry and hurt, you should browse the threads in the Questions for the Team (PS3) Forum. The simplest answer is that the PS3 crowd had to wait over a year for BioShock. So if they got a straight port, they are the ones who should feel legitimately cheated. Adding a little extra content to offset the fact that BioShock is now ancient history is only fair.
If the PS3 version came out a month or two after the PC/360 versions, that would be an entirely different story.
Also, Sony may have paid for exclusive content (again, to offset the fact that it has taken a full year for the PS3 port). This is very common and has been done in many other games. One system gets new levels, etc that another system may not.
If 2K is able to bring over the additional content, I'll be first in line to buy or download it. But nobody has the right to say they got cheated. You've had a year to play BioShock while PS3 owners got shafted. That is huge.
I seriously doubt 2K even knew they would be doing this port. How often do you see a game ported a year later?

Fort Frolic is pretty much a huge Mall. The Sophia Salon is like a little boutique with clothes and all. But yeah, a Jewelry and/or furniture store would be cool to see too.

It's pretty much there, already. Ever been in Cohen's gallery basement?
It's flooded, with a safe in the back. There are plastered corpses all around the gallery and leading down the basement. Some of them aren't corpses. There was one sitting in a chair facing the corner. As soon as I hacked the safe, I turned around and it was standing right behind me! Freaky as hell. LOL!
Some of the others disappeared, and showed up later in creepy places around Fort Frolic.
Anyway, how about a bowling alley? You hurl heavy bowling balls at splicers via the telekinesis plasmid. Or just get in a few frames!

Well yeah, but that wasnt excatly a "wax museum". A real wax museum would be spooky, because wax figues look like frozen people, and on top of that there could be wax figures of movie stars that we all know and creepy music in there.

Well, yeah. That's why I said, "pretty much."
I've always wondered what a SuperStore would be like.
All the shelves totally looted, some isles blocked off making them like a giant maze to get lost in, Splicers scavenging from leftovers around every turn (and fighting over who gets the last slice of pizza XD), going over to the Freezer section seeing corpses dunked in the freezers, going over to the bakery and opening the ovens seeing corpses burnt to a crisp.
Lovely Jubbly.

Yes but THEY were stupid enough to buy a PS3.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but maybe a school or university level with plenty of classrooms and a gym, and offices etc. The gym or stadium could have "jock splicers", basketball and football player splicers that juiced up too much to improve their athletic abilities. The basketball splicers would be very tall of course with long arms and legs, they could grab you from greater distances and jump towards you. The football splicers would knock you on your arse by tackling, close-lining etc. I think I have seen artwork of football player splicers...

Actually, as said before, the Wax Musuem would be cool... and very freaky. "Oh look! Those two are dancing... Lets continue *hears a noise and looks back* Wasn't there wasn't there two dancing figures?"

Rapture does have a football team, the (something) Stingers and some other one, the advertisment is in the Farmer's Market, I think. They also have football-based thuggish splicers. I will post a pic if needed.

that is a must have in the next game. Although i doubt many citizens of rapture didnt use adam or werent forced to eventualy to survive. I hope there is a survivors colony though. I waited all through the first bioshock to meet people who werent mad.

theres the bee ones and the atlas astros. i think some leadhead splicers wear football uniforms. An arena in the next game would be awesome where you are in the arena against football dressed spplicers with the stand full of other splicers and you must kill the football dressed splicers (gladiator style)

Or its you versus the Stingers (the bee one) versus the Astros. Would make it more managable if the teams are fighting each other and you. Fun to watch, they should rush you kinda like the Bouncer does, but just knocks you down.

I work at the SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and I think they need an art museum. Modern art was in its heyday in the 40s and 50s and there are many many freaks in the modern art community. It would make for some awesome new splicer designs, especially if they camouflaged themselves to blend in with the art. Obviously Sander Cohen's little playground springs to mind but I think a more stately and formal museum environment would be frickin' awesome.
