Game is great, but I do have some problems with it... maybe I just misunderstood something cause I'm very new to the series. I've got the full version so that isn't the problem.
1. The computer can be extremely predictable in very stupid ways. When I expand at the beginning at some point pretty much all - I think all - enemy factions will start threatening me, effectively ripping me off or actually going to war with me. This happens VERY fast I think. You can go from having no enemies to basically battling on all fronts with all factions in a matter of a few turns, which is just overwhelming.
2. What's even more problematic is that they are oblivous to eachother's existance... or maybe they aren't, cause they will form alliances early on I think, but they just don't care if say the French get extremely strong. My last game the French were heading for victory via technology AND culture while I was trying for domination. The French were closer to victory, yet every single other faction were bashing me. I just don't get it. I had only been aggressive towards the Greeks which were behind me on the same peninsula as I.
3. Again with the predictability. When I was all but wiped out suddenly every single faction wanted peace with me. Hurray, I thought, now I can get in the game. Well you do get a few turns of peace, but when I reached what I guess is a predetermined number of cities they all attacked me again. It's like you can be sure of it. I researched technology heavily and came up with tanks which helped me push enemies back but only until they got the same units and I was stalled. I couldn't come any further as all cities were defended with the same units as mine.
4. Related to 3. Is it just me or do the dices that decide the outcome of battle roll against you in the late gameplay? I was stunned at the number of times I lost to an inferior army which was even technologically behind? I mean sure realistically when you get tanks they would just roll into any city that isn't past riflemen, so maybe that wouldn't work, but my tank should ALWAYS win against a couple of catapults out in the open? I mean seriously that ruined the immersion a bit for me.Whether I was unlucky or not, the outcomes of the battles are decided far too much by chance imo. They also noted this in the eurogamer review below a picture.
If this is just plain wrong/stupid please tell me what I'm doing wrong/not understanding. I'm new to the series so I might not understand fully.
I realize I'm sounding very negative, but actually this game is awesome in so many ways. I'm reviewing it and was thinking about a 9, but the above problems seem to ruin it for me... so therefore I hope you have some useful comments to make. As you can see, some of the above problems should be eliminated by playing against other people instead of the computer, so I'm looking forward to that :-)
