theres a slightly darker more realistic look to the game which looks really good. i wonder what the civ characters if any would be like?

Civ characters ? I don't quite follow you, do you mean leaders or great characters ? Because the preview mentions leaders actually... i think. But the new screenshots do look nice and i am glad to finally see some soldiers.. although i am a little bit disappointed they don't have the three soldier units.. i quite liked those..
