If you have say 5 Science left, and you have your cities set to a total of 10, does 5 of that carryover to the next tech you choose?

You take gold instead of that science. For bronze working you need 20. If you have 25 you take 5 gold and the tech

so the strategy would be to set it so that it hits perfectly the amount needed, then switch it back for the next turn?

Can you explain? If you need 20 for a tech and you have more than 20 you take gold equal to the difference

Can you explain? If you need 20 for a tech and you have more than 20 you take gold equal to the differenceautomatically? (take gold) or do you manually rearrange the production locations to something else?

It is auto. You take only gold, not production. And you said, "or do you manually rearrange the production locations to something else?". It could be impossible, because if you build the library and you don't work on science, you'll take 2 science on that city. How could you move the worker?

I have 2 cities of 3 pop each

one city has 2 resources of Science (+4), and one of Prod.
the other city has 2 resources of Science (+4), and one of Food.
total of +8 per turn of Science.

the next tech will be complete in 6. this means I have +2 extra Science than is needed. does this +2 extra go toward the next tech selected? do I get +2 gold instead? does it not carryover, and I would be better off changing one of the resources to something else, say Food, for that turn, then switch it back to full Science (+8) on the next turn?

Well, i repeat it, you take 2 gold in that time, suddenly, you don't need to do nothing, but if you want you can move 1 tile of science to food, or production if you want

thanks for the replies

I did some testing with the demo last night, and found that if I had a surplus of +2 science, I received +2 gold for it instead.

so I guess my original theory was correct, only that the surplus is not wasted, it creates gold instead. I will continue to move resources to hit tech completion as exact as possible, each turn. 1 Food or 1 Prod is much more useful than +2 gold, atleast in the early (by the time the demo ends) stages.

thanks again!!!
