You pretty much nailed it, actually...
In the dark.
With headphones.
And a bag of Funyuns :p
(My friends can scare the hell out of me at 2 AM when I'm playing BioShock just by sitting next to me... lol)

Since this is more about how people enjoy games, I moved it to the BioShock OT Forum.
But its a good question. :)
Some games are much better with headphones. But BioShock is much scarier to me with my 5.1 speakers. Hearing the various Splicers yell and doors open in the distance is crazier when I can hear it spread around the room (and bouncing off the walls). And I'll play any time and get creeped out, but nighttime is obviously the worst.
Heh. The single scariest thing that can happen when playing a horror game? Having your dog or cat in the room and having them suddenly wake up, sit up, and go on high alert, peering intently into the dark or down a hallway. Not barking or freaking out, but definitely looking for something that bothers them. I hate that. LOL
No way I could eat while playing a game like this. Need both hands to react. Plus, getting crumbs in they keyboard is icky.
(Oh, and Funyons are the food of the gods.)

Okay, this is slightly more OT, but its my favorite "scary game" story. I was playing Half Life with my baby brother (13 years younger than me), and it was really rare for us to hang out like that. He had never shown much interest in gaming, so it was fun to have him riding shotgun. We were both totally immersed.
Being wussies, we were literally pressing our noses against the monitor to try and spot enemies from as far off as possible. We even leaned in our seats to try and peer around the corners. (LOL!)
Anyway, it was a level where those barnacles hang from the ceiling and try to grab you by your neck to drag you upwards.
My brother, in a near-silent whisper (guess he didn't want to alert the bad guys) slowly points at one in the extreme distance and warns me, "Look.................testacles."
Took me a minute to realize that he mispronounced "tentacles". Then I fell out of my chair laughing, and as realization dawned on his face, he joined me.
BEST. GAME. EXPERIENCE. EVER.

Ssymmmmetrical...! Symmetrical?!
...Must calm down..
Unfortunately I have to play the game on my big brother's computer, as just recently he got it all updated with a large screen - and not to mention it can actually run the game, on full settings no less. So, I play it on that pc, with a nice set of loud speakers.

Yeah, you would've knocked off his jaw right out of place. Lol. :D
I have to make sure the doors to my room are locked when I play. I use headphones and people like to barge in like they own the place and freak the hell out of me. LOL.

Yes indeed Mari! My wife will scare the H out of me on purpose. She takes pride in making me flinch when I'm playing with headphones on!
I'm often forced to pause my game and do a quick look around my living room to catch any potential sneak attacks :)
BTW - yes! I second the motion that Funyons are indeed sweet nectar, nay, ambrosia of the gods!

Haha! I do that too. :D
I have a habit of pausing the game just to listen. LOL. But sometimes it sucks because I pause the game while fighting BD's or splicers without me even thinking of it. :D

First couple of playthoughs i do in the complete dark fully involved, subsequent playthroughs i do with no sound and play with various pink floyd albums blasting loud still in the dark, these playthroughs i play way more streamlined and less involved, i love the mechanics of the game, these are more speed throughs then real playthroughs

That sounds like a cool way to play I must say. It would be tough for me though 'cause I'm so damned maticulous about searching everything and grabbing every diary. I play that way everytime and if I even try to play in a rush it drives me crazy. I'm always worried I'm missing out on something

Lets see... The first time that I played was at night at my sisters house in the middle of the woods on a Sony HD big screen while sitting on a puffy leather recliner. The second was at my other sisters house in the basement on my laptop and it kinda sucked because I had to turn all of the graphics options off.
