I was just wondering, will the final PS3 build will be 720p max resolution or 1080p max resolution? On its face this probably seems like a minor question, but it makes a world of difference on newer LCDs. I would assume that the dev team already has higher res textures then were on the 360 version available (from the PC version) that would make 1080p very feasible, but thats only a semi baseless assumption.
I'll get it anyway, ;) but 1080 would just be a nice bonus to add to the other PS3 version goodies.

I figure it's going to be 720p. The Xbox version was 720p (as are most games for the PS3), the one difference between the two systems is the Xbox has a chip that can put out higher resolutions (i.e. even though all the content is 720p mine always puts it out at 1080p, upconverts is slightly with no change in graphical quality) - something the PS3 does not do.

That is interesting. I learned something new. That would explain why 360 has Dark sector listed for 1080p and PS3 doesn't. So maybe it was a 720p game and 360 just could do the upconvert.
EDIT: When you say no change in graphical quality, do you mean it still looks like 720p but it is technically 1080p? Or it actually looks a teeny bit higher res when compared?

that is interestin? as it states on the back of my 360 box that it can display 1080p? is that not true? i do hope to god that its 1080p as i have a new lcd (40" samsung 1080p) and that is one of the many faults with ps3! they always put out 720p i think the only acception i can think of was call of duty 4? that looked great on both consoles at 1080p. can any of the team clear this up? pleaes say it will be 1080p? its not giving anything away spoiler wise.

Hmm - my PS3 outputs at 1080p via HDMI irrespective of the native resolution of the game or movie.
Upscaling is a wonderful thing and can either be done by the PS3, AV receiver (if you have one) or a decent 1080p TV.
Not sure what the fuss is about - I played Bioshock at 1920x1200 on my PC so any console graphics are going to be a let down.

As far as I know, PS3 can output it for anything, but most games are 720p. 360 can upscale games, PS3 doesn't. PS3 does output 1080p for blu-ray and such, but games tend to be 720p on PS3.
EDIT: I didn't see consoles graphics as a let-down when I watched them compared to PC, because the console was BIG screen (46" 1080p) and the PC (1920x1200) was small. I couldn't see a difference. And I much preferred watching the big screen.

Well, I'll be a Monkey's Uncle! You are correct and I am mistaken.
I've just taken a 720p game and stopped the PS3 from displaying anything other than 1080p or 576i and it reverted to 576i (rather than upscaling).
Don't really care what an Xbox does as I haven't got one and won't be getting one. Also, the PC wipes the floor with both in terms of displayable resolution. Accept what you say about having it on a big screen but my 24" PC monitor takes up the same FOV from where I sit as my 40" TV does from my sofa (and it's a heck of a lot easier to get my mouse from one side to the other on the PC for that snap shot). :)
Cheers for that.
I grabbed this from another website.
"The games that say 720p will be at 720p and wont be upscaled! Note when it says 720p it means it will look best in that resolution. Also some games have other resolutions but sometimes look worse at higher resolutions ex rainbow 6, this game looks best at 720p but will be displayed at 1080i if u HDTV is set to 1080p/i. For almost all games the TV will show its best image automatically so dont think that 1080p/i will look better than 720p all bc its of the resolution. It just depends on what resolution the games was maximized at. ps3 doesnt upscale ps3 games like the 360, ps3 games are natively made for a specific resoultion(s) thats why i have noticed ps3 games do have a sharper crisper image."

So far the image of PS3 doesn't seem more crisp and definitely not more sharp. They are very close and PS3 has better black zones (dark areas, shadow coloring), but I remember very clearly that I was comparing the versions of GTA IV and 360 looked more colorful and a little sharper. PS3 looked about the same, but just certain thing less sharp and colors didn't quite pop out like they did to me on 360, so I went with 360.
P.S. Who did you quote that from?

PS3 games now do upscaling via software. GTA IV could be displayed in 720p/1080i(not sure about 1080p). It ran better in 720p though.

so ok, after reading this a couple times, I'm starting to confuse myself. Will my ps3 tell my tv what res to show it at, or do I need to manually change it on the ps3? I have a 50" DLp from Samsung that will support up to 1080P. Thanks for your help.
Also, I found this info if it'll help anyone: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/15/720p-ps3-games-downscale-on-older-hd-sets/

That clears stuff up.
So expect BioShock in at least 1080i.
