as the title says, how? I have the ability to build the next type of units (eg riflemen instead of archers) but I don't see how to upgrade my existing archer units?

Do you mean you want to convert your archers into riflemen?
You can't. You will either just have to wait for them to die or sell them.

Or build Leonardo's Workshop Wonder. It upgrades all your units.

But it's better to have researched all technologies, because it upgrades all unites when you finished it. The best thing could be build a lot of units, for example 50 riflemen that one coasts 20 (russian 10) and when you can build modern enfantry you upgrade it and you have 50 of them. It could be a good strategy.
PS: remember that some troops have some bonus as English, Arabians, French, Spanish, and others..

Is there anyway to combine units? Like, if I want a unit of 6 or 9 men to easily crush a 3-man party?

Does this actually convert all units to the newer model eg. archers to riflemen?

Play as the Germans all there elite units get automatic upgrades. Leo's Workshop is only a one time upgrade.

If you inherit Archers / Cavalry etc from Barbarians in the late game eras, you can right-click on them to disband them and get a small gold refund.
