The cities grows one unit bigger. If it was 7, then you add a settler, then the city is 8.

will that give you more resources or tile spaces or something?

If you have a city of 3 and you have a settler join it it will become population 4. Then instead of only being able to work 3 of the tiles you can now choose 4 resources to work.

*Keep in mind dont produce settlers from the same city you want them to join. Even with a republic goverment you'll lose one to gain one...

Also if you have a population of 9 or more and your working all your tiles, the left over population will work in your city and produce +1 Production (Hammer) A black flag will appear in the city to identify these traders in the city..

This can also be used if you want to build something faster but you only have one forest tile and like 5 population. Just highlight the one forest tile and unhilight the other 4 tiles and you will have more production...

thanks, i just have one more question, if you trade a technology to someone else do yo lose it, for example if i traded or sold a technology that gave me the ability to build a wonder would i lose that ability?

Good Question... I've only ever declined a trade offer so i don't know but i would like to find out as well. Try posting it here, http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1821, in the Official Question Answere Thread.

No, you do not lose the tech.

But be careful when tech trading. You dont want to trade a military tech (or prereq) to a civ that you are about to go to war with. I'd also shy away from trading wonder techs if you are in the process or plan to build that wonder.

Good thread. Answered two burning questions of mine.

If I'm not wrong, it'll cost more and more food to grow one population point as the city grows. So, with the republic, you could theoretically build a settler, gain one population point a little bit faster, and then settle the settler again :) So there is actually a difference. You can convert 20 hammers to a couple of food :D

Keep an eye on what the other civi wants. Sometimes it's not worth the tech trade, or gold. I wish you could choose what tech you might trade with them not just the 3 choices it gives you.

Example Aztec's tech want to trade me 'code of laws' of 'irragation'.
option 1 trade for that
option 2 trade 'mathmatics' for code of laws
option 3 not intrested in trading

should add option 4, I can pick some other tech for code of laws that i see as an equal trade. Like bronze working for code of laws.

good point, but i never got choices, only when they were threatening me and it says you'l have to settle with blah blah blah when they ask for a certain technology
