How do you guys get to the nuke and tanks and modern stuff? I can only get as far as a fighter (FIrst fighter plane) thats the max unit i have ever got up to it, after that the game ends.
So whats the secret? How do you get your units and techs so quickly? I am a really, REALLY new player. So sorry if its a silly question. Just wanna enjoy this game more.

well basically you've got to research techs to get the newer stuff (I'm assuming here you have the full game not the demo, otherwise you're doing pretty well to get the fighter in the demo)
In order to research tech you have to generate beakers or science from your cities. Most of this comes from ocean squares. If you go into city view (lb on 360) it will tell you how much science each city is producing. Science can be interchanged with gold production in a city so it's best to have a good balance unless you're specifically going for tech/economic victory. Building cities near the coast is a good way to increase science production.
Each tech has a numerical value of beakers associated with it. You choose the tech to research, and each of the beakers produced in all your cities per turn combine, and go towards that tech. When you hit the number of beakers, you gain that tech.
So basically all you need to do is increase your science by building coastal cities, libraries and universities.
Oh and there is only 1 nuke in the game, and it comes by constructing the Manhattan Project wonder, which requires the atomic theory tech.
Hope this helps!

Make sure you optimise each cities science production (build libraries and universities), build cities near water (science producing squares), then make sure each city is focused on science (go to city screen and press Y - assuming your on a 360.)
With enough cities in good locations, all pumping out science, you'll get the techs you want before 2100AD.

Actually its more importat to optimize a Few cities science production.. (depending on what you are going for)... a Library+ university are far better in a high population city or a water one or one with the colossus than in your city of hills and forests.

Play chieftan which will get you nowhere in life. All single player is, is the tutorial for some who have not figured that out by now. The people who you've heard get nukes, is because they play Chieftan on single player, they can't get that in multi on the demo. I mean i've got like 3-4 cannon armies in a h2h game once, but I was only focusing on science up to a certain poin and then pretty much stopped, but I still ended up getting cannon's. Chieftan gives you more than a 40% handi and that is why you see people do what they do, and plus adding on top of that theirs a bunch of bonuses you get and the AI is easier than easy.

Actually, does anyone have any idea what the actual bonuses are for the difficulty levels (besides +100% combat on chieftan and +50% on Warlord)
