How far into the future will this civ extend?
Does it keep it's "Civ" feeling of gameplay even in real time?

Civilization in real-time? Unthinkable!
It's going to be turn-based as it always has, but aside from that, it's written from the ground up as something completely new.

This should help answer a good amount of your questions. :)
-----------------------
Sid Meier’s Civilization Revolution is the latest offering in the legendary award winning Sid Meier's Civilization series of strategy games, featuring the famous "just one more turn" addictive gameplay that has made this one of the greatest game series of all time. Civilization Revolution has been designed and built (by the legendary Sid Meier and his team at Firaxis) from the ground up for consoles and handhelds delivering graphics, gameplay and controls that take full advantage of the hugely popular gaming platforms. Civilization Revolution is a watershed game offering players a chance to experience the epic empire building world of Civilization in a whole new way – in an accessible, visually immersive, fast paced, action-packed world that gamers crave.
Choose Your Civ: Choose from 16 Civilizations throughout history (from Africa to Germany to America to China) to lead to victory. Each time you defeat a rival civilization you’ll add an exhibit to your Hall of Achievements paying homage to your great accomplishments. With so many Civs and Leaders to play, you’ll have a new and exciting experience with every game.
Lead Your Civ: When you choose a Civ play as one of the world’s most famous historical leaders (like Abe Lincoln, Otto von Bismarck, and Mao Zedong) and compete against the other leaders as you strive to create your own history in this epic game. Each leader will have 4 special abilities giving their Civ unique advantages throughout the ages.
Real-Time Interaction: Leaders and advisors will actively communicate with you - even turning and pointing to things in the world as they speak – making the interactions more realistic and engaging than ever before.
Explore The World: Your quest to explore and discover will have you traversing the globe in search of long lost relics, rival civs, technologies, barbarians and much more.
Fast-paced Action: Accessible maps and streamlined time scale will deliver quicker games and constant action.
Intense Combat: Triple your strength by combining up to three units into one powerful army and destroy your enemies. When your units win tough battles, they will become veterans and then elites. You can then choose from a list of powerful upgrades that will give elite units even more strength to dominate in war. Your Army will wear a distinct uniform representing your Civilization, so you will easily see them on the screen as you lead them into battle.
Multiplayer:
Hot Join – join a game already in progress.
Simultaneous Moves – no more waiting your turn, just make your move when you're ready.
Early Withdrawal From the Game – a player can drop out and the game will keep going.
Team Play with handicapping
Xbox Live: Up to 4 players can battle as teams, head to head, or have a complete free-for-all. Auto-matching, ranked games, leaderboards, and achievements make the online play more versatile and fun than any previous version of Civilization.
Game of the Week: Each week a new Firaxis created map will become available to players for download. Finish the game with the highest score you can achieve, and have it posted to the Civ Game of the Week Xbox Live leader boards to see how you stack up against players around the globe!
Endless Fun: Unlockables, scenarios, mods and additional maps offer infinite replayability.
Integrated Video and Voice Chat: When playing a friend (or foe) in multi-player interact with them in a whole new way! Watch them smile as you offer your assistance, and then watch that smile fade away as your armies march into their capital.
Downloadable Content: Players with Xbox Live will be able to download extra content like multiplayer maps and scenarios not available to offline players.
Achievements: Whether you play single-player or multi-player, you will be able to unlock achievements for everything from making your first diplomatic contact, to winning the game with just a single city, to playing a game online with the legendary creator of Civilization, Sid Meier!

Why must all xbox strategy games limit us to four players?! I'm really going to miss the sixteen player days.

I'll try and answer questions as they pop up (I'll also rope in some Firaxis people if need be):
Hmm will there be xbox live support
Yes, for four people.
how many civs are there
16, although the number may change in either direction as the game is balanced. All Civs will look and play differently from each other, so it's not as easy as just throwing a ton of leaders in the game.
can we still use the SoD
Kinda. You can take three units and form an army, which is significantly more powerful than individual units.
how many different ages will there be, but mostly will it still be similr to the original pc titles? (follow the same formula)
Not sure on number of ages. Gameplay wise it's a mixture of Civs 1 - 4. It's not like any individual one, it takes features from each and creates something entirely new.
How far into the future will this civ extend?
Does it keep it's "Civ" feeling of gameplay even in real time?
Not sure how far into the future it'll go. There isn't much in the way of FutureTech, but the space race victory is more like Civ 2, where your ship has to actually get to Alpha Centauri in order to win (it's not just sending the ship off to space).
The game is turn-based. It wouldn't be Civ if it were in real-time. In multiplayer, you can do simultaneous turns, but that works like it does in Civ IV (everyone makes turns at the same time, but only one turn...you have to wait for all people to move before you can make another turn).
Why must all xbox strategy games limit us to four players?! I'm really going to miss the sixteen player days.
The four player limit is to make the game a lot faster-paced than an epic civ game. The idea is to allow people to play full games that run the course of history over Xbox Live/PSN, which really isn't possible when you have 16 player epic games. Also there are memory concerns on consoles that aren't an issue on PCs.
The pleasant side effect of the smaller maps is that you butt heads a lot earlier than you do in Civ IV. It changes the gameplay quite a bit.

Will we be able to evolve/civilize any civilization besides the humans (aliens, basically)?
If not, in a future download/installment would it be possible to include the ability to evolve alien races on other worlds who either want to work with or against the humans? And we could even evolve humans from apes into sapiens and manage all the tribes and hunting packs...that would be sweet.

Hello ! I have two questions about Civilization Revolution. Hope you can answer them :) .
1. Is there going to be hot seat gamemode? I love hot seat sessions and i think people love too. If there wont, could people play with system link?
2. Could people play cross-gaming around the internet? For excample, Mr X plays on Xbox 360 against Mrs Y on Wii. If this game mode is possible, Revolution would be a huge succession. Then Firaxis and 2K could host big tournaments and other competitions for people all over the world and any console. Hope you can answer/or make these "dreams" happen :) . Thank you anyway!

1) Yep, we should support hot seat.
2) Unfortunately, this isn't possible. Every platform we're on (360/Wii/PS3/DS) has a closed network.
On the other hand, what we might be able to do is have the game of the week synchronized across all platforms. The GOTW is a specific game scenario that everyone can download at the beginning of the week, and play through single player to get the best score. At the end of the week, you can see who has the best score in the world.
We may be able to post a worldwide, across all platforms (including DS!) leaderboard on our website. We're looking into this.
But direct system-to-system multiplayer just isn't possible.

What about PSP? Will there be one for it at some point?
Right now there are no plans for a PSP version. All versions of CivRev (Wii/DS/360/PS3) are being done in-house by Firaxis, and they just don't have the manpower to do another version. There's nothing about the PSP that would prevent it from eventually coming out for PSP, there just aren't any plans right now.
Will we be able to evolve/civilize any civilization besides the humans (aliens, basically)?
CivRev is sticking with the core civ game tradition of having real civilizations, so no aliens.

1) The game will not have a level editor. Console level editors require a lot of work, and there's no time in the schedule for that. I tip my hat to Bungie for including one in Halo 3...I can't imagine how much extra work that entailed.
2) There's no reason why you *can't* have 20 cities, but the size of the maps makes it a little impractical. On a lengthy game, I usually have 4 or 5 of my own, plus other ones I take by force.
3) Armies are just for land units. Naval units are generally used for support and troop transport, so there's not a ton of sea combat. Having said that, they're a lot more useful in Rev than they have in any previous civ.
4) We haven't announced the unique bonuses for each Civ yet, but they're all very cool, and each civ has a different bonus for each era. I'll give you one: Romans get half price roads in the ancient era. :)
I am very excited about this, I've been wanting Civ on my DS since before I made the decision to buy my DS! I'm wondering how Civ Revolution will take advantage of the console's features. I'd absolutely love to see a DS two-screenshot. Is that going to happen soon?
The DS version of the game can be played either completely with the stylus or entirely with the face buttons depending on your preference (I tend to prefer not to use the stylus). We're not going to do any crazy stylus stuff just for the sake of supporting the hardware's unique features (the same goes for the Wii version).
We use the two screens logically. The upper screen shows additional information, and that's where combat animations are displayed.
I'm not sure when we'll be releasing screens from the DS version. It's fully playable from start to finish (and by the way, it's awesome) but it's behind the other versions in terms of art assets because everything needs to be redone for DS. So things like the interface are totally placeholder right now.
I'm sure we'll get something out there soon though. Until then, just take my word for it...it's a TON of fun.

Don't worry, ALL versions are online, including Wii and DS. That's been a priority since the beginning. We will have 1v1, 2v2 and 4 player free-for-all on all platforms.
Regarding scenarios, we have not decided on that yet. There will be downloadable content later, but we haven't decided on that either.

This looks like the perfect game to implement cross platform play in. Especially for Vista against XBox360 as Balance isn't that serious of an issue. Yet I can't help but notice this game isn't even going to appear on the PC.
Why? It seems like the perfect oppertunity to use what has so far been a useless feature in the XBox360 and Vista.
Is there any plans to release the game for the PC?

Hi,
after reading the description of all the games features and such I noticed that it only mentions downloadable content for XBOX Live users. Does this mean that PS3 owners won't get the content?
If they DO get the content, is it planned to have all content available at the samt time on both 360 and PS3?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

Will there be Mouse/Keyboard support? The PS3 supports USB and Bluetooth Mouse/Keyboards (I believe the 360 supports USB Mouse/Keyboard). Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3 supports in-game mouse/keyboard play. They did this to help bring over the PC gamers.
If you guys wanna do the same thing and bring over some PC gameers, I suggest you add keyboard/mouse support! I have played Civ since the original, I just can't imagine playing Civ with a controller! As mentioned in a previous post, strategy games that have come to console in the past have flopped because there was no mouse/keyboard support.
I have a PS3, and have been slowly moving away from PC gaming because this generation of consoles are moving closely to PC's in terms of features and what you can do with the consoles (You can actually install an OS on the PS3 and basically make it a computer!) . I am excited for this game, but keyboard/mouse support will be the determining factor of whether I purchase this game or not. I know there must be many others that feel the same way I do...

There is not mouse & keyboard support.
This is not a PC game. It’s been designed as a console game. It’s very, very different from Civ4 and we don’t want it to be looked at as Civ5. We don’t want people to think that this is meant to replace the existing Civ games. This is a totally different game, created exclusively for consoles. It is never coming to PC... There was never a mouse interface; it was always designed around a controller. - Jason Bergman

¿Is this loading time going to be present in the final game or we can expect these appearances to be natural?

the game is turn based, so the game does not really "stop" when you are talking to an advisor or leader. you are simply conducting diplomacy, and not moving any of your armies or other people around. it feels very natural, and when you are done with whatever you need to do with those people, you can go on building, or fighting to your heart's content.

Uhm.. seems I didn't explain myself well enough. I'm sorry, I'm a not-english speaker. Thanks anyway for the answer, Elizabeth, I really appreciate it.
What I meant is... in the videos I watched, when leaders or advisors appear there seems to be a lot of lag... like the screen freezes or something...
I suppose that that issue is going to be repaired in the final version...

Online multiplayer has been confirmed for XBL and PSN. A few multiplayer modes have been listed: 1 on 1, 2 vs. 2 (permenantly aligned teams, presumably), and 4 player free-for-all.
Questions:
Will the same online multiplayer modes be available offline (or you may call it local or hotseat multiplayer... anything but online)?
Will there be split screen offline multiplayer?
If no split screen, how will Simultaneous Moves work for offline multiplayer?
Will there be any offline multiplayer in Civilization Revolution!?!

Two questions:
1) I've been a huge fan of Civ ever since Civ II, and some of my favourite additions to the series since that game are religion, civics, and a simple combat system replaced by an excellent, complex combat system. Are these newer elements that pile more mechanics onto the core gameplay structure going to be stripped in favour of simplicity?
2) I'm glad to hear that certain cool touches from Civ II are coming back, like the advisors and a throne-room-esque element, so are there going to be nifty world wonder videos like in Civ II? I loved those things. The wonders that had the coolest videos determined which ones I built, rather than the actual effects of the buildings.

Some, but not all, civilizations have unique units. Example: Keshik Horseman replace regular horseman units for the Mongolian Empire.
Are unique units better than the units they replace? In other words, does the American Sherman Tank have a better attack or defense rating than the regular tank unit?

Unique units are specific to the culture, and look unique for that culture. They don't have an attack or defense bonus.

Religion is a technology that can be researched. We don't have Civics in the Civ IV-sense, but there are multiple government types that can be researched and then selected, each with a different bonus. The combat system is different from past civs. There are separate attack and defend ratings, and terrain is super important, as are bonuses like unit upgrades, great generals and naval support.

Instead of wonder videos, we have real-time in-engine sequences showing them being built. On the other hand, we have some really cool multimedia content in the Civilopedia, so we have stock footage of many of the wonders, units, and other things in the game.

Hi. I been reading this forum and see it gets speedy replies from admin which is nice. Having played Civ1 since the early days, one of my favourite strategy rules was the Zones of Control, for being able to defend yourself and keep enemies in check until you were ready to pounce. I have a sneaky feeling this will be left out in CivRev. Are you kindly able to confirm either way?
I'm so looking forward to seeing a demo; is there a time scale for the release of this?
For me the beauty of Civ1 and 2 were that they were essentially strategy war games with some straightforward city managment - a really great balance to keep it fun. Sadly Civ 3 lost it for me and became a micro-management sim. Since then I've migrated to FreeCiv on my Linux Box, which mixes mostly elements from Civ1 and 2. In you opinion, which Civ is it mostly based upon? Or is it really an equal amalgam of all four?
Either way, as with all the iterations, I will have to get a copy for my 360 and maybe DS; to see if it has that 'just one more go' element that set the early Civs apart and kept me up to stupid o'clock in the morning.

Hello, and I am greatly anticipated the DS version however someone said in another thread (or something similar)
"They ability to name features you find such as plains and mountain will be removed for DS"
Is this true and if so why the hell did you remove?

i see a bunch of questions out there since i fell asleep last night, so i'll try and answer them in a batch:
you always play against 4 other people in Civilization Revolution, so there are always 5 civs (including you) on the map. this includes all three platforms, it's the same.
as for naming features, on the DS you can choose from a list of names for plains, rivers, etc., but cannot custom name these landmarks. (same goes for cities).
i'm sending an email off to Civilization Guru Jason to ask why this is different, but my educated guess would be taking custom naming out to leave that space on the DS cart for some other features that are cooler to keep in!
EDIT: my educated guess was confirmed!

there is no hotseat mode on DS. you can play locally with other people who have their DS in the room with you.
there will be scenarios on all platforms.

it's a new game, with a new take on the series! we didn't just take pieces of Civ IV to make this game -- Sid created it as a new, and separate, game.

I can't believe this! Only 5 cities you said? In the civ 3 game I have going right now, I have literally about fifty cities. I love the aspect of having that many cities and really feeling like I'm running a country. But now five?
I'm actually bummed out now. They better make it work or I'm going to freak out and cut myself when I put in in my 360.
Maybe I can still be consoled; There were several map sizes in CivIII, which is the latest version of civ my computer (which was state of the art when I bought it ninew years ago) can handle, I think they were: tiny small medium large huge. I think. Which size would the largest size map in civ rev compare to?

you can make way more than 5 cities in Civilization Revolution. i usually start with about 5, then start taking over other people's cities. but you end up with far more, at the end of the game. (through conquering and taking your settlers to other islands!)

They probably didn't include hotseat, because with simultaneous moves it would mess up the flow of the game. They at least give the option, to spend an extra $600 dollars, so you can play a LAN game with your friend.

Supposin, just supposin now, My rival and I have a cavalryman unit three squares away from a village. Does that mean that the fastest one to move the horsey reaches the village square?

5 CIVs in a game at one time, not 5 cities. The number of cities is only limited by the amount of landmass.

Glad you agree man, would be an absolute brilliant move to have this available on the PSN as a full download. I'm not too sure about the costs for digital distribution on the PSN, other than the obvious bandwidth costs that comes with millions of people downloading the game. I wouldn't think that server space would be chargeable but heh, you never know.
I would imagine it would be significantly less than a retail version which has manufacturing, shipping, and retail shelf space costs. Plus anything else I'm missing.
Simply put it makes the game way more accessible for gamers.

Sorry for asking questions about graphical side of the game rather than game mechanics (and thus, some may consider, "wasting" them ;)) but I'm curious about the following about the advisors:
- How many advisors are there in the game? I have counted four (science, diplo, culture, militiary) - do they look differently for different civilizations?
- Just a quick confirmation question - I noticed that unlike other advisors science advisor always looks the same (e.g. in one early screenshot, he is talking about Bronze Working, but wearing a lab coat). I presume this is an early screenshot and his outfit actually differs from an era to an era, like that of the others?
Thanks in advance. :)

As far as I know there isn't any region coding. I bought MLB 2k8 last month from the US while I live here in Europe (The Netherlands). It's still working fine. So US games aren't region locked.
It might depend on which game it is though. I've heard some developpers do region lock their games and some don't. But there's a good chance CivRev isn't region locked:)

I'd like to know that aswell as I'm really hoping to play CivRev online with a number of my friends if I get them to pick the game up. Regarding the Xbox there seems to be US, European and Japanese/Asian versions. Not sure about the Australian ones.
I can play some US and European ones, Australian games have worked but the discs themselves get locked which is the problem. Some games are locked to one region and unless there is an Asian version, for example, I wouldn't be able to play. For a game as important to me as Civ Rev I'd really like to know if I will be able to play it or not.

I'd like to know specifically if you might be interested in updating the 360 version after release to work with Microsoft's rumored "wiimote" [if it's a) real, and b) has a usable pointer mechanism]? I assume if expansion is possible, the game would also be designed to accept bug fixes and updates, yes? Would this update be a priority for you guys?
Thrallia
05-13-2008, 03:27 AM
microsoft isn't making a 'wiimote'. Just because they submit a patent for something doesn't mean they plan on using it(for instance, Nintendo patented a 3D holographic gaming system a year before the Wii was announced as motion control...but they aren't using it)...it just isn't plausible for the 360...although it could be something they are working on for the next Xbox

We'll find out soon enough (http://kotaku.com/388741/rumor-microsoft-may-debut-new-xbox-360-motion-controller-next-week)
According to sources that will go unnamed, Microsoft may be showing its Xbox 360 motion controller as early as next week to press, a controller geared specifically for Banjo Kazooie 3 gameplay. In fact, we've heard that select members of the press have already seen the controller—in use on the next Banjo Kazooie title—in action.
Microsoft plans to show off some of its 2008 and 2009 wares at an event next week, one that hits during the Game Critics Awards at which some of the "Best of E3" awards are judged. Occasionally, NDAs and embargoes ensure that what is shown at the Game Critics Awards doesn't go public until E3 proper, which may keep details on a the rumored new Xbox 360 controller under wraps.
There's nothing about such a controller that is implausible for the 360, it's all about how Microsoft goes about supporting it, and Microsoft is good at bringing developer support around to their priorities.
Either way, I did say "if", I'm not claiming it will happen, just that speculation has been building for some time, on more than just patent applications. So what do you say 2k, would this be a priority, and is the 360 code capable of integrating that kind of update?
Stanos
05-13-2008, 09:29 AM
Don't you think that the people at 2k would only start to think about something like that until it's officially announced. I mean if there really are some "rumors" about some kind of wii-mote, then it'll probably release next year maybe even later.
So with all due respect I personally find this a kind of useless question. Wait until it's announced then start asking for this kind of stuff

I'm not sure is this the right place to post this question.
Is there possible to expect different distribution of resources, in the way that one mine of iron can provide only four units of swordsman, or one unit of panzer (with all the others necessary resources)? And can you link capability of building some wonders with enough stone/marble queries, or mines.
The second question: can you put shipyard with different capacity in coastal cities as prerogative to build a specific ship?
The third one: Can every unit have there leader which can develop different traits, depending on battles resolutions, and therefore influence in overall strength of the unit?

hi
i just want to remind you before i ask quesstion that you told us your favourite civs are japan , mongolia and azteck.
now about other civs and ability as arabs americans and india its like this 3 have to defend against other 3 in ancient time and if you survive this attacks
from formidable enemies as japan mongols and azteck then you can payback after in industrial times.
1 what are chance for arabs to defeat mongolia in ancient times ? (to rush mongolia with arab nation)
2 do you have to get close to the city ( 1 tile to bombard city defense with catapult or any siege weapon)
* on number 2 i prefer infantry infront of siege wepon and normaly artillery is on the back shelling cities and enemies from distance wich makes only horsemans/tanks to flank them or if you have great number of infantry soldiers to run thru enemie lines.
3 sid meier will play only on xbox not on ps3 ?

It's pretty rare that shelved stuff ever makes it off the shelf. So I second the not getting your hopes up part. They've said here that if Civ Rev sells well, they might pick up the Wii version, but my guess is they'll be on to the next game and won't have time for it.

Please 2K, enable 2 player split screen so two can play on HDTV co-op or versus.
If it's too late to incorporate it into the game now. Atleast leave a place in the code so that splitscreen can be implemented later into the game via a downloadable update.
So many of us have 50 inch widescreen hdtvs now. We are dying to play RTSs with our friends by our side.
When you split a widescreen tv in half vertically, you get about the same proportions as a computer monitor so it would work well.
Having your friend actually beside you is so much better than having to play with them over online.
Since the campaign is designed for coop please enable split screen on the same console/tv for two players.
I would love to play with my bro by my side on my PS3 and my 50 inch 1080p plasma tv.
I would love to play against him too, even if we can see what each other is doing, it's not that big a deal. So if you could enable both coop and versus play for two people on the same tv, it would be fantastic.
Local multiplayer is FUN. It's why games like Goldeneye, Tekken, Halo 1, Smash Bros and many others became such massive massive hits. All four of those games would have been worthless without local multiplayer.
Many people discovered those games at a random party at their friends place. Many of them including I weren't even gamers at the time. But when they saw how much fun it was, they bought the n64 and goldeneye as well.
"Consoles are about fun with your friends next to you, not being on your own."
Now with hdtvs everywhere, if 2K makes this game splitscreen capable, it will be my and so many others dream come true.
In all honesty, back when I was in college when I had a roommate, I couldn't count up the number of games that we bought that we otherwise wouldn't have just because we could play through them together, or against each other, at the same time as we are hanging out.
And I can't count the number of games that we decided to pass on a game we were both interested in because we knew we would have to take turns playing it.
The same is true now with me and my brother. And the same is true for lots of people who have best friends that they hang out with all the time and want to play through games with together as they are hanging out.
These are situations that apply to millions of people.
This is why I am convince that splitscreen support for this game would give this game a huge boost in sales among the console gaming community.
Especially when considering the huge number of quality RTS games scheduled to come out on console within the next year and a half, none of which offer this very valuable feature.
This year, consoles are getting Halo Wars, Supreme Commander, Civ Revolution, Tiberium Wars Expansion Pack, End War, and a couple of other RTS games that I can't recall at the moment. And there's a great chance we'll get Starcraft early next year as well.
Fortunately out of all of them, this is the only strategy game that is being designed for Co-op play. So none of those other RTS games will feature splitscreen.
Co-op is a massive massive advantage to have over other games. The fact is, no body has two PS3s or two 360s in the same house, and very few people would willingly bring over their console over as well as an additional tv to play co-op with their friend while they are hanging out.
There are tons of FPSs and other games that people buy over others just because they support splitscreen co-op. Thats why more and more gaming companies are incorporating that feature into games.
Simply put, if Civ: Rev doesn't incorporate splitscreen co-op into the console version, it will be just one of over a half dozen solid RTSs that come out within the next 12 months, and won't sell that well. If it incorporates it though, it will stand heads and shoulders above the rest for this and could easily double it's sales on consoles for this one distinct advantage
Splitscreen coop would actually work a LOT better if you are able to peek at what your ally is doing too.
So it absolutely should have that, atleast based on how every mission is designed for coop play and how wide, widescreen hdtvs that people own these days are.
But I think as long as coop is included, throwing in versus would be a nice change of pace too. Technically, FPS shooters shouldn't work in splitscreen since you can always see where your enemy is. But FPSs, even tactical ones, are a lot of fun even during splitscreen versus. Same thing here, it's not ideal, but it's still lots of fun and would be a very welcome option. It would actually provide an additional challenge.

@ wikoogle : Have you ever played a Civ game? It's a turnbased strategy game. So if you really want to play it in local multiplayer there is no way you would implement a split screen, it's just stupid because in split screen you would see what your opponent is doing. (The only way of obtaining such technology would be by researching satellite tech.). So if civ would have to be played locally and would be played like a real Civ game you would need to take turns and disappear with each turn out of the room what sounds really silly to me if you are playing a game together. I would hate friends that ask me to come over and play a game that can take up to four hours and where i'm supposed to stand half of the time in the hallway. Guess I would call up a friend that's got Mario Kart ;)
KrashKrunal
05-21-2008, 05:34 PM
It doesn't really matter. In FPS say Resistance: Fall of Man, the aim is to kill your opponent, and if your playing offline multiplayer AGAINST each other, even if you can see where they are on the screen, you STILL have difficulty finding them because the fact is that your focusing more on your screen than theres, and if you don't you have a high chance of losing. With the turn based aspect of Civ Rev slightly loser than before, it means that I'd be a lot more focused on getting my turn finished before my opponent has his turn finish.

hey guys,
we already have an active thread about split screen/hot seat going on.
i'd also like to add that it's against the rules to post the same thing in multiple threads. pick the best place to say what you want to say and keep it there -- no need to repeat, that's just spammish.
please don't duplicate this topic. keep this thread on track.
I was watching the interview with Barry and he was talking about how the animators got to go wild on the fight animations, death animations, etc.
In the combat animations, do the units react to the type of terrain they are on (e.g. take cover behind trees if fighting archers in forests, charge down the slope of a mountain, ...)
KrashKrunal

okay, i know that everybody probably knows by now that I was told that in civilization revolution, there would be no possible way to edit your map or to edit your civilization...
although it is probably too late by now, try to add onto civilization rev the ability to edit civilizations and customize already made ones like you could in civilization 3 and civilization 4 on the PC. It would be awesome! And the ability for ultimate customization of civs are one of the major things that make this game unique.
at least try to have it, or have a cheat code for it or something.

Sure they can... patches are just part of doing business on consoles these days. In fact I can only think of 1 ps3 game that I own and has not received a patch. Civilization, perhaps more than any game I have ever played, benefits immensly from the ability to customize the rules and maps to fit the type of game experience you wish to have. I look forward to the experience that Firaxis wants us to have with CivRev. I only hope in time they loosen the reigns a bit and allow us to tailor our games in at least some of the ways that Civ is famous for.

What size game cart will the DS version be using? I may be wrong, but I would think the 2 gig game cart would be the best choice for a game like Civ. If it isn't using a 2 gig, can you please explain why? I understand that 2 gig carts are expensive, which is why so few companies use them. But I would think the extra space would provide the developers to do much more, especially for a game as huge and of such high quality as the Civilization series is known for.

One of my favorite maps in Civ IV was the world map. You know, the one that was based off the real world. It was huge, and it had a lot of features of the real world, which was very cool. It gave me a lot of fun, epic games. I'm planning on getting the DS version, so I'd like to know: will there be a map of the real world? Especially since there's no map editor in Revolution (right?) Having that map would make me an extremely happy gamer. I know there might be some kind of randomly generated map using features based on the real world, but it just isn't the same as recognizing geographical features from the real world, such as the boot of Italy, the Black Sea, Bospherous Straight, Sea of Japan, ect. And then you think, "gee, this is where Ogodei Khan built the city of Karakorum", or, "I'm invading India in the exact same spot and at the same time and starting location when Alexander the Great invaded India." There's nothing quite like comparing yourself to actual history. If the map isn't in the game, I suppose it's too late to add it, right? Maybe you've covered this question before, but will there be downloadable content for the DS version? If so, maybe this map could be downloadable? It may sound silly, but having this map would give me many, many more hours of playability in order to recreate historical situations on a global scale (as I did in Civ IV). And it's also a fun way to teach kids (and some adults) history/geography. It would make a world of difference for me.

Sorry to bother, but i have 2 questions.
1) wil you be able to have an aero-view of your city like civ 3?
2)If you can only build one ICBM, how strong will it be? does it have the same affect as if you had raized the city?
FadingBeano
05-31-2008, 05:56 PM
From what I have seen the cities change dramatically in the normal game view from what is built. So I guess just zooming in close is a good aerial view?
And for number 2. What I've seen from the nuke, there can only be one, and it basically takes out all units around the area it hits and destroys the city. Unless it hits a capital then it just reduces the capital to population of 1.
That information only comes from what I've seen at screenshots, videos and forum posts.
I have a question of my own. Anyone seen any screenshots of the throne room?
Is it:
1) max 1 nuke per civ at any given time, but if you use it you can build another
2) max 1 nuke per civ, and you can never build a second even if you use it
3) max 1 nuke per game, whichever civ builds it first gets the only one

there are scenarios in CivRev, but we have not been given any information about them by 2K.
Each civilization has a single ruler, who is essentially immortal, because they never die unless you kill off their civilization.
And you could create your own world wars by asking various civilizations to declare war on each other, but you won't be able to get 'loads' of countries to do this, as there's 5 civilizations in each game.

Also im confussed, you said there are only 5 civ's in each game i thought there were 16 civ's in each game as there are 16 different civilizations surely they are all in the world at the same time?

I don't know what the scenarios are, usually they are historically accurate(to some degree) recreations of history, but not always. We won't know anything about them for sure, other than that they exist, until Jason or Elizabeth tells us more
As for the civilizations, there are 16 of them, but only 5 of them will be present in any game at any time.

so whoever you choose the other 4 are chosen to make the 'world' balanced if you will
do Jason and Elizabeth work on Civilization Revolution or are they jus like well informed???
Also are you restricted to earth map layout, for example if you are britain or Japan you are stook on a small island, or does it jus randomly generate maps or is it a little of both??
Thrallia
06-03-2008, 01:56 PM
from what I recall, it is entirely randomly generated maps in the retail box.
I agree that I would like more than 5 civs at a time, but from what we've heard, in order for it to be a 2-3(or 3-6) hour game, many more civs than that would not be plausible...plus the size of the map makes it so that more than a 5-7 civs would be too crowded.
Jason and Elizabeth both work at 2K, Jason is the producer for CivRev, and Elizabeth also works on it and is the community manager for CivRev.
I'm also not sure if you choose who you are against, or if they are random also.
FadingBeano
06-03-2008, 02:02 PM
The AI civ's you play against is random. In the single player podcast they were talking about the number of civs in a game. By having a game of 5 Civilizations it is easier to keep track of and they found it was easier to relate a personality to each one for that one game/round. If there are more than 4 AI's, the devs believe people loose track of what the other civilizations are up to and this lessens the immersion.
I agree with this as I don't think I could keep up with more then 4 AI's in this faster version of Civilization. And trying to keep track of more then 4 is not fun for me and they try to remove everything that isn't fun.
This is why I believe they are making CivRev JUST for me!

because the only two PS3 games I'm interested in right now are Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank. They do not equal $400 worth of hardware for me. Plus, I am not interested in buying a PS3 that will not play any of my great PS2 RPGs. If I get a PS3, it needs to play PS2 games also, because I want to get rid of my PS2(it is dying very slowly...takes 5 minutes to boot up a disc now)

Buy a used 60 gb.

the only place I've seen used 60GB ones are on eBay, and they are still selling for more than I can afford at the moment.
I'll buy one some day, when they are less expensive or I have more spendable cash and when there are enough PS3 exclusive games I'm interested in to be worth it.

For Elizabeth's trait Naval Support, what exactly does that mean?
When you put a naval unit next to the unit/city you're attacking with a ground based unit, they provide naval support, giving you an attack bonus. Elizabeth gets two times that bonus.

Why was my thread closed!!!!!
i understand that there was one rather similar above but that has over 200 replies and if you only have one question it can take forever to go through all of the replies to find the answer for your questions
So i thought it would be a good idea to make a fresh 1!

I would bet that it was to help keep clutter off of the forums. If everyone started making a separate thread to get their questions answered, it would be even more difficult for people to find those answers. It's easier reading through a few pages in a single thread then it is to read multiple threads with just one page that are scattered all over the forum. This one gets bumped up pretty often so it's easy for new (and old) players to see. :)

Is it true that the PS3 version will ship on DVD? And if so, why should we be expected to shell out $60 current gen price for an archaic last gen delivery medium??

yes, the game is on DVD. we didn't need bluray, it fit on a DVD. and you're buying the game, really, not just a disc! :p

All next-gen games cost the same amount, and I'm pretty sure media format doesn't play a factor. It's probably due to the increased development costs to produce more complex games that plays a major role.

I imagine the disk and packaging costs them very little. Like all new games, you are paying for R&D.

Would be fun to know how much space you have over.

lol archaic lol you do realize that probably none of those PS3 games you've played really needed Blu-Ray Discs to fit on, right? The only game in production, that I'm aware of, that actually needs a Blu-Ray Disc is MGS4.

i personally like japan the best because i enjoy growth on sea tiles, which is a great perk at the beginning, and the samurai bonus! also the japanese are neat.
i think the best difficulty is really depending on player. :-)

I don't know the answer to this, but maybe tomorrow Elizabeth can shed some light on this for you.
Just remember that the DS version plays exactly the same as the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, so cart size really doesn't make a huge difference. They obviously fit everything they needed to on the DS cart. :)
Thrallia
06-05-2008, 01:34 AM
yes, the DS version is identical except for graphics, so I don't think it matters what cartridge size was used.

we are using the largest DS cart available -- i forget the exact size, but i do know in our platform podcast we discuss it more in detail.
the game is exactly the same, but for sounds and graphics. graphics are 2D now, and there are fewer sounds, and the sounds are of course well optimized. we trimmed this stuff down so the game mechanics, scenarios, and save games could be maximized!
but yes, the DS is identical to 360 and PS3 gameplay-wise.

There are a boat-load of scenarios which set up different playable situations (like raging barbarians, modern starts, all tech unlocked, etc.)

I have a few questions; forgive me if they have been asked before.
1. Mouse & Keyboard support - Will there be mouse and keyboard support on the PlayStation 3 version of the game?
2. Resolution - I saw in a thread earlier that this game will support everything from 480i to 1080p. What is the native resolution of this game? Will 1080p be upscaled, or is it true HD. Any information on the frame rate?
Thank you for any response i may get :)

25 pages is actually pretty rough to read through to find an answer. I bet if she asked, there'd be a user here who would mine this thread and organize all the questions and answers into a single post, which Elizabeth could then copy to the first post in this thread (making it look a little more like the official FAQ thread), and that would make it a lot more useful to newcomers.

you can save single player in the full version. you can never save multiplayer or game of the week.

is the singleplayer campaign in the game an important factor or is it just treated like a tutorial mode for those who are about to play multiplayer, kinda like battlefield games?

06-06-2008, 10:23 AM
I consider single-player to be the deeper alternative to multi-player, but that's just me. I like the empire building aspect of the Civ games, while my neighbor in the next office is a hard-core multi-player gamer.
Single-player allows you a bit more flexibility to play the emperor, to really get into the nitty-gritty of the game, and then save it to play later if you choose.
But again, that's just me. To each their own. :)

Got two questions here:
1. What are the ways of upgrading a unit? There was a wonder for this but is there any other possibility?
2. What are the exact tile properties that give research/gold? What tiles are good to place a city where you want to produce lots of research/gold?
EDIT:
Actually one more.
3. What are the exact properties of a spy? If you have a spy in your city and another spy tries to go into your city, what happens? And is there a difference between Defending and just being idle? Also, is another spy the only way to discover enemy spies?
