You don't need Civ4 to play? Why's it called an expansion pack?

good question!

Colonization is called an expansion pack because it takes the Civ IV engine and completely overhauls it to make this game. But since this is a completely new game, rather than just adding on to the Civ IV experience like the past expansions, it didn't really make sense to require Civ IV to run it. We don't need the Civ IV assets attached to the first game, but we do use the Civ IV engine to make this game work, so it's part of the Civ IV family.

I'd call it a stand-alone expansion, if you get technical about it. There have been these kinds of expansions before. Just adds a bit more flexibility to what you have installed at any given time (not that Civ IV is ever uninstalled on my machines. In fact it's the only game on my laptop for travel.)

How will it be priced? Like a new game, or an expansion pack?

Yes, like the original Colonization! But I don't remember that being called an expansion . . .

Anyway, thanks for the response. I have a couple of questions to add:

- Will there be any gameplay differences from the first colonization or is this basically an exact port to the new engine?

- What sort of copy protection system will be used?

Thanks!
