No in-game sound

When starting Bioshock, I have sound during the credits and opening sequences, but no sound in the game (after the plane crash).

Specifics:

Dell XPS420
Vista Home Premium
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
SigmaTel High Definition sound
DirectX 10


I ran the DirectXDiagnostic tool and it reported "No problems found"

Can anyone help?

Create a shortcut to Bioshock:
Right-click on a blank spot on the desktop and choose New then Shortcut. Navigate to: "C:\Program Files\2k Games\Bioshock\Build\Release" and choose Bioshock.exe. Click ok. Then Right-click on the newly created shortcut and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility Tab and choose to run Bioshock in Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2. Apply and say ok then use that shortcut to start Bioshock.
