What do you think?
Setting
See Rapture at its height. Everyone is gorgeous in a Hollywood kind of way. Everyone is happy and nice to one another. Andrew Ryan is regarded as a hero.
Storyline Overview
You assume the role of Atlas, one of the simple workers – such as a construction worker or plumber, though you (like everyone in Rapture) are highly skilled (i.e. an engineer).
See very slight mention of Fontaine and his affects (smuggling), mostly through off-handed rumors – something minor, such as, “I know where you can get some REAL Cuban’s (cigars).”
Then tragedy occurs. A pipe breaks or a pump fails and a residential area begins to flood. The area is where your family lives. This is the first action to take place as the player runs around attempting to use the wrench to shut off the water. This is also your first moral choice: You are told that you need to shut down pumps X, Y, and Z: this will save the large residential area but almost certain see that YOUR family is does not survive. The other option is for you to attempt to save both, placing everyone at greater risk.
People die based on the player’s decision. All the citizens of Rapture are very upset by the tragedy; however, Andrew Ryan is arrogant and flippant about the event (something along the lines of, ‘a minor loss for this grand design,’). His callousness to the tragedy upset the citizens of Rapture. Atlas especially, who lost his family, does not feel that this was a minor loss at all.
Having lost everything, Atlas is easily persuaded by someone offering to help ease his pain with a new drug (Adam). You soon become an addict and quickly find your way working for Fontaine who offers the drug in limitless amounts… for a price.
Central Theme
The overarching moral dilemma is between the self and society. The actions you take to preserve yourself (and in some instances, to advance your well-being) are in opposition to the society at large. Every action you take that helps yourself (and by association and through employment also helps Fontaine), tears at the fabric which holds Rapture together.
