I know that cid is saying that a game can be completed in like 3 hours now.... because of downsizing the maps.... but will there be larger maps for those of us who like long games and alot of land to capture? Thats my bigest question.... any thoughts?:)

I agree that it would be nice to have the option. I've played marathon games of Civilization 4 with my friends and had a blast. I realize that Civilization Revolutions is a different game, but still, would be great to at least have that possibility. :)

while its probably too late in development to suggest something like this, i have to whole-heartedly agree. the OPTION to have long, long games, is something i've always enjoyed from the series and hope will not be stopped with Rev

To sort of amend my previous statement, I'm not going to knock it until I try it. Maybe playing 3-4 shorter games will be just as fun as playing one long game. ;)

from what I've read, the option won't be there from the start...but I'd love it to be an unlockable option or added in DLC or something.

on the video that somebody posted a few days back, they said that they would have "game of the week" as dlc. I think they could have a stupidly big map then

I think bigger maps, and more civs to play against will probably come as dlc, at some point in the future. Although personally, I'm hoping they'll also go the other way, and offer duel size maps as an option.
Because when 'time is a pressin' it can be really cool to be able to play a short twenty or thirty minute game of Civ, just to keep your hand in! :)

Games can go from 3 - 6 or more hours. It all depends on the difficulty and speed you play at.

Overall I am pleasantly awaiting Civilization Revolution and all of the glory that's been put into it. Based on what we've been shown of combat sequences and overall grahpics it's hard to ask for more from a game.
Luckily this is modern times and games can be enhanced via xbox live to further satisfy customer demands. The things I'd like to see worked into DLC are:
1. The possability of longer games, those epic games that usually end with tactically nuking entire civilizations & sending in clean up crews to mop up any survivors.
2. More civilizations, more customized units. The different armed forces of the world should have a few more differences than just 2 or 3 units. I'd appreciate it alot if they wore different uniforms too, not just color coding. An egyptian warrior, shouldn't look like a spanish warrior. If there was a DLC patch that added this further detail I would be massively impressed.
3. Terrain altering natural disasters. Volcanos erupting, floods, earthquakes, drought, hurricanes. I think a weather system would make the game feel more like a real planet.
Thrallia
05-10-2008, 09:22 PM
There's only one Nuke in the game, so nuking entire civilizations wouldn't really be possible.
Also, from what has been said, it sounds like there will be many culturally different looking units(kinda like BtS added for Civ4)

I'm mostly okay with the direction the game is going, getting a little more friendly to players who aren't willing to dump sixty hours into a game, but it would be nice to have some huge maps and extended play that could bring back that marathon feeling.
I recommend such an expansion for your DLC aspirations.

I think it is quite nice to have shorter games. I love the civilization series but one thing that stops me booting the games up on my pc sometimes is the length it takes to play a game. Sometimes I want a quick fix of civ without having to dedicate a few nights to finishing one game. It looks like revolution will serve that purpose. :)
I personally are not worried about longer games at the moment because I can always play beyond the sword for that purpose, however when I start playing revolutions I expect that I will change my mind.

I wholeheartedly agree that this title would benefit from the option to increase the size of the map for solo play. I was disheartened when I read about the one size, smaller map being the only option out of the box. That will be fine for awhile, but IMHO different map sizes really boosts the replay value for me after the newness of the game has worn.
I'm of the opinion that any customizable options are only a good thing for the solo game. I understand the need for uniformity during online play, but changing map size, number of adversaries, and heck, any number of rules only keeps me coming back for more.
BTW 2K gurus... I understand the need to withold information about future DLC for the time being... but I don't suppose you could give us a better idea When you might... give us a better idea about the DLC? :)

But as i remember from past civ's, civ is that game that you immediately want to start over when it ends. And that was mostly a big problem because starting again for hours and hours just wasn't possible for normal human beings.

yeah, it depends on how fast a player you are...with no time limit on turns, you can take as long as you want to play.
I doubt everyone finishes a game in the same length of time. I'd probably take 1.5-3 hours to finish, because I play fast...a normal epic length Civ4 takes me less than 5 hours to finish. However, I know people who take 35 hours to finish that exact same game...so they'd probably take at least 3-6 hours to finish a game that takes me 1.5-3 hours...does that make sense?

Personally I really like the idea that the game wont last that long. Before when I used to play Civ3 I always played like 9-12 hours straight and then saved the game....the next day I woke up jumped on the computer to continue that game but 90% of the time I didn't because all the fun stuff happens earlier in the game so I just started a new game.
I have started a game many many times but I think I have finished the only like 3 times.
But the big minus for me about this new game is that it wont have hotseat...I remember playing civ2 with my friends on a pc...it was great fun but we had to either switch seats on every turn or when we got wireless keyboards&mouse we moved the keyboard from one guy to another.
So thinking that if CIV REV would have hotseat....playing on the big screen tv and for all the players have their own controller and just taking it easy on a nice couch would be the most fun! ....but unfortunately thats not the case here :(
I dont remember was it on this thread or some else where some one said playing against each other and seeing every player make their moves doesnt make sense? WRONG.
For me CIV is like chess...you see your opponents moves but still you have no idea what he is thinking. And I remember when playing with friends you really could mislead people and when they knew what was going on ...it was too late and quess who won ;)

I agree, the most fun things happends in the first hours but whats problematic for is how the maps are so small, that exploring wont be fun at all.
Or building a big empire.
Thrallia
05-27-2008, 10:41 PM
again...seriously...stop it with the complaining about the size of the maps. They aren't 'tiny' maps, they are 'small' , which is barely smaller than the normal sized maps from Civ4.

i've played quite a few games so far, and while i expect everyone to weigh in on game length themselves, for me my playtime varies greatly based on (in single player) my difficulty level and the victory i am trying to achieve. games are longer with smarter AI.
as for multiplayer, again, it depends on how good your opponents are. :-)

How quickly would you say AI tend to start wars? In Civ 4 things usually heat up when civs start choosing different religions. Since Civ Rev is a quicker game then Civ 4, do wars generally start a lot sooner?
Also, do you think there will there be scenarios as DLC? I know you guys aren't talking about DLC yet but I really love the Final Frontier mod in Civ 4 so I had to ask. :)

again, it really depends on your difficulty level, how fast you start stepping on another civ's toes. also, how you negotiate with them, and how close you get to them (or get in their way.) in deity, basically i'm always getting trounced by two or three civs who are warring with me. :-)
and as for DLC -- you will just have to wait and see!

I'm all fan of marathon games. So I can't imagine how will be a game of only 3/6 hours. The bigger the better.
Are we going to discover navigation and boats, next minute are we already using submarines?! whats the fun of that?
A big thing that I love in CIV is the possibility of evolution. To discover technology, and be the most advanced. In so small time frame to play in CIV REV, are we going to enjoy what we discover?
Althought I understand the need to change some concept of CIV game. the need to be more multiplayer and online game. Its the future of gaming.
I hope the changes don't kill my appetite for CIV games.
And thruly hope to have options to make larges maps and have as many AI civ as I want.

I for one love the philosophy that was stated about the making of this game. I think Sid said it himself that they kept everything in Civ that was positive to your civilization and removed the aspects that were negative. Such as corruption.
In my opinion I found that managing a huge civilization on a marathon time scale with 16 civs running around was work. It just wasn't fun for me.
I like faster paced games, and I love the idea of Civilization, and yes nice graphic and pretty colours:cool: . I cannot wait for release as I feel this game was made just for me.
Sid said this is the game he always wanted to make and this is the game its sounding like I've always wanted to play.
Well thats my two cents but I do have a question on turn timers. Say I am playing a game multiplayer on a short turn timer. And I have to take the dog out. so I leave for 5 min and the game continues. I know none of my units will move, but will cities keep producing the same unit when I'm gone? Well research come to a halt if I'm not there to say 'research this'? Or will it go ahead with the recommended tech?
Thanks.
P.S DnICY, its sounding like you want Civ5 not CivRev.

well i got simple solution, those that love long epic games 24/7 games games that never end or they end by quitting just go back to civ 4.
im tired of quitters noobs and slow turns that makes civ 4 boring and pathetic .
some of the ppl that play ladder games they put strict rules 100 turns or so with 2 cities elimination to make game short .
pls make game as short as possible plsssssssss.

I´ve played 3 rounds now on and King was hard as.. let´s just say it was hard :P So anyways, I would LOVE to have bigger maps to have those epic moments in civ history.. :)
Requests:
1) Bigger maps for single player. Give the player the choice. That is without a doubt the biggest request on these boards that i´ve seen.
2) Adjustable amount of Civs
3) ....

That would never happen
Surely the whole point of spending time to make this one from scratch and making it specifically a short for console players and only giving it small maps, defies the purpose for doing that by adding big maps and making it - basically- back into the old game!!
i personally hope he doesn't make large maps as i am happy with it taking me 2/3 hours to complete..... i meen coule you imagine how long multiplayer would take if you had big maps!!! nobody would ever go on unless they had like a day spare in which to complete it!!

You know, they won't come out and say it, but that's probably not as simple as it sounds. If you've played CivIV, you know how the game turns into a slide show towards the end with large maps, on most computers. It has improved somewhat as the game was optimized and patched, but the original version was pretty bad.
This version runs on consoles which have a limited amount of memory compared to your average gaming PC. I have a feeling they optimized the game to run reasonably well on consoles with the current map size (and even then, it tends to slow down towards the end), but you'd probably need some serious work to make it run smoothly with larger maps and more civs. You definitely couldn't run CivIV-style huge maps.
[Edited to add that they claim that the exact same game run on the DS, without the flashy graphics. As long as they stick to that, the DS is probably the most important reason why larger maps are impossible. Not that most of us care about having the same map sizes on the DS...]

I personally so far like the length of the game just the way it is. I've never played Civ before, mostly because I felt the games were too long and found something faster paced like Age of Empires was more enjoyable. Rev seems like a brilliant game so i'm not at all surprised they always wanted to make a game like this. It has lots of potential strategy, it looks fairly decent considering everything, and the game is paced just right that console gamers (who primarily enjoy fast paced games with a lot of action) can play this game enjoyably along side people who prefer to think and manipulate and build empires.
I think if this game gets enough PR that it could be a great hit for the DS, PS3 and 360. So far I haven't really heard anything about this game at all...anywhere. I only found the demo in the 360 marketplace by chance, a few days ago when I was bored, and figured i'd give it a shot. =P I'm not sure why it seems to have so little advertisement by and large, considering I haven't played anything but that demo on my 360 since I found it! xD
At first the demo seemed hard. The time limit seemed way to short and in my head I assumed no one could get to the rifleman, let alone tanks and planes and things. Then I fought someone randomly who somehow got tanks and an atomic bomb and easily crushed me and that totally made me want to play more. Strategy games are always fun. =P Either you have the joy of crushing someone, are locked in an epic match with someone equal to you, or you get destroyed and are just revved up and wanting to play again. Considering how addictive this game is, and how fun i've found it, I've already gotten most of my 360 friend list to at least try the game, and nearly all of them want to buy it (which is saying something since most of them are FPS fanatics).
As to the few suggestions for stuff people have made here I'll keep it short. I agree 100% that each civilizations units should look different. It's a minor thing, which really can slowly be added whenever, but is just one of those little details that can suck you into a game and really make you enjoy it.
I also think if you get wiped out you should be able to simply view the map with no fog of war and see whats going on. I would love to see how powerful the person who crushed me is, to see how the match progresses and who wins. As it stands the one time in the Demo I was skilled I left almost right after, seeing as how there is little to look at there.
When it comes to the size of the map itself I think it's perfect. I'm under the assumption you can't make a game continue past 2100AD? If that's the case then large maps do two things.
1) make Domination Victories just that much harder to have a chance at achieving
& 2) Make it a lot easier to get all the other victories (since more land, means more cities without bumping into enemies, which means a faster resource intake for more techs / buildings).
So yeah! Sorry I kind of started rambling about stuff but I couldn't help it! This looks like a great new game and I can't wait to get it! ^ ^ This game totally just topped my 'must have' list! Good job. x)

All maps are pretty much random with the exception of Game of the Week which is set by Firaxis every Sunday.
No-one knows what the DLC is going to be yet as it hasn't been announced (that's my understanding anyway)
EDIT: Sorry, to clarfiy from the FAQs:
4. What is the Game Of The Week? Is it a new map?
No, the Game Of The Week (GOTW) is not a new map. It's a set of random variables generated from the server timestamp to randomize certain elements of the game (such as number of AI opponents, number of starting cities, era the game starts in, etc). After completing the GOTW, your score is uploaded and compared against other players around the world.
So technically, GOTW is random too, it's randomised on a Sunday then fixed for the week...

As far as I'm aware there is no custom maps available in any of the play modes on the full game. So to answer your questions... no there is not a world map.
I believe all the maps are random though there are some similarities creeping up in some matches once you've played it a lot.
